The way I've heard it described is "letting the image slowly come into focus", where you start real blurry and loose and worry about the major shapes and forms rather than small details. Another way I've seen it described is "building a pyramid". Might sound very abstract, and I am still learning how to put this into practice fully myself, but it helps compartmentalise your problemsolving and saves on time

I definitely like the flats and inks. One of the things I've been pulling from browsing your sketches it to be a lot looser with mine and focus more on composition and finding my forms.
