Joey was definitely one- if not the best duelists in this tourney, He don't have no Millenium item to help him or mystic connection with an artifact/predestined by his past, he doesn't have no god cards, nor a multi-billion dollar company with access to every card and advantage at his disposition, he just started from scratch from the ground, that's as underdog as it gets. And he would've beaten Marik even with his Ra if it weren't for that shadow realm bs

Shout outs to Free TV, Yo. Waking up to Waking the Dragons, and going to sleep to Zexal, GX, or 5Ds is just an awesome experience 😆 They really learned from Joey and decided to make MOST of the side characters duelists going forward, AND made them competitive. No more cheerleaders that can't throw down (cards) themselves. No more No.2 being a perpetual underdog. I loved Joey as a kid, but I see how little potential the writer actually gave him now.

This duel alone made Joey my favorite character. He isn’t rich with hundreds of strong cards. No ancient egyptian magical item/alter ego to rely on. Just willpower and strategy on his side, nearly taking out the Final Boss of the arc. This may be a reach but because of this duel, I always felt that Ra truly belonged to Joey and it would fit narratively between him, Kaiba and Yugi. The ‘weakest’ duelist with the strongest God Card.
