A couple of people have commented recently that while I have many different box designs, and some of them are even practical, I haven't really focused on making things actually stay closed. That's really had me thinking hard about how I might approach such things.
And then I figured I'd start with the most convoluted approach I could think of. ๐
Yep, this one is equal parts functional and ridiculousness. Turn the main cog and drive the rack pins into their receiving slots on the box body. Watch the superfluous second cog turn at the same time, just for fun! Actually, I've put a hex profile into that second cog so that I can make a key of some kind turn it.
Now, you'll notice that while the lid is print-in-place, I've kept it separate to the body of the box. If you're thinking "no way, I demand complete print-in-place assembly!", have no fear - there's actually another version that has the lid hinged to the body, and the entire thing prints upside down - It'll be posted shortly!
That said, I intentionally posted this version first because it's much more practical as an actual container!
An interesting side note - those rack pins will actually come all the way out, despite being printed assembled. That's intentional, as it means I can swap them out to put different thickness ends on the pins and make them lock more securely into the slightly-tapered slots in the box. The existing ones work pretty well for me, but every printer is different! Let me know if you want a slightly thicker pin design. If you want a thinner pin, just sand or file it down a bit :)
Once again, a lot of fun to make, and my workshop is littered with fragments of lid cogs (mostly printed in light pink, for some reason)
