So when Killua backs up, and Gon doesn't, it's a pretty big character moment that goes back to what Illumi was saying in the final round of the hunter exam. "Never fight a soneone that's stronger than you." It's been drilled into Killua by Illumi from a yong age, and even in that fight, Killua gives up even though he thought that Illumi would kill Gon if he did. The polar opposite of Gon's attitude towards Hanzo.
