4 in japanese is Yon or Shi: Yon is the usual reading of 4, but the are instances for the use of Shi. But since Shi sounds similar to Shi as in Death, it is considered "unlucky", so in most instances, Yon or yo is preferred. I believe the Ko in Yonko comes from Kotei meaning emperor! Yonko Means Four Emperors! If you hear something alla' "Yonin no Kotei", they are referring to the emperors. (Plz If anyone has a problem with my understanding, plz be nice I self studied for 6 months about 9 years ago, I want no angry comments on this thread. But PLz tell me If I am wrong)

Good question on the whole hierarchy of getting to King of the Pirates status. Does Luffy need to fight general/ordinary pirates, Warlords, and then the Emperors to become King of the Pirates? Yes and No. Yes - he needs to beat the competition. Especially the strong ones. No - other pirates could take out each other before getting close to Luffy. Also surviving the New World, reaching the last island, Raftel, and getting the One Piece will determine the King. IMO lol

Yonko is literally Four Emporers. "Yon" for "Four", and "Ko" for "Emporer". I'm guessing if they were the Thtee Emperors, they would be the Sanko.
