Yeah, the fact that they practically announced that those two killed the twins to everyone they met and then some has always felt weird to me...

Especially as she could smell it and identify it even when weakening. You would expect senses are one of the things she would have in sharp abundance, the tea should have been a burst of identifiable components before even sipping it.

Thanks for the detailed feedback about the progression and stats - I put this comment in the other branch of this thread (just in case it gets buried by patreon's comment system): Thanks for taking the time to make a well reasoned response - I've been burned by some of the commenter/reviewers out on RR, so your answer is refreshing. I designed Lira as a non-combat class, and a character that requires her domain for most of her magic. In this regard she doesn't have a lot in the way of personal defenses. I had intended this to feel like Alexander was exploiting a specific vulnerability with a tailored poison for this specific purpose, however, from your (and others) responses, it clearly didn't land well. Edit: I see a few more comments discussing the value of attributes and the breaking of the sense of how level progression should work - and of course in hindsight I see the point. Not sure right now what can be done about it, but I will definitely take this feedback as a lesson learned.

I see what you’re coming from but what kind of resistance is she gonna have? In fact, I would say she’s probably very vulnerable to physical attack not to mention poison. Ali is extremely vulnerable and she has no resistances of any kind and I doubt she’ll get any besides maybe some kind of mental resistance. so why would this dryad be any different? not to mention she could’ve had very few stats into perception and endurance relative to her level. Also this poison sounded like it was made I think? And most poisons in our real world that are manufactured are extremely deadly to us and it could kill us in seconds, I imagine the same is true in this world

When Aliandra finds out she is a dungeon and that all of her friends knew and didn’t tell her about it, i wonder if she’ll feel betrayed by them for keeping a secret about her class from her

Yes, I'd have to agree with looting pillager here. Earlier on a big deal was made that the guildmaster and the others were so far beyond the rest, when they're only in the 100's. Even if they're dedicated combat classes, in my head it still makes little sense that a level 300 non-combat class (and even if they'd only get 5 stat points per level, that'd still amount to 150 levels of 10 stats/level from combat classes) would get bumped by a roofie like that so easily. Not sure if I have a good solution to that buuuut it kind of makes the progression seem a little skewed/lessened. Still enjoying the story alot, just disrupted my sense of continuity in the world

Looting Pillager

Yeah exactly. In stories with stats even minmax characters typically have protections for their weaknesses at certain points, not because they are changing their build but because the minimum stats in an area still build up and can work with the much higher primary stats that seem to have no correlation with one another. Take perception and strength. A really strong character may just get better at spotting more effective spots to apply their strength with a little bit of perception, or a high intelligence character with a reasonable dexterity may mean utilizing that intelligence to deftly pick locks, or more exactly utilize a martial arts move taught to them. Stats always matter in these setting, because if they don't sometimes then it becomes capricious in when they matter and when they do not.

Arkeus

You have someone who has survived over three thousand years of wars, constant assassinations and just the plain bad luck of sometimes all the worst things happening at once. Surviving that long is insanely hard, and while the "one of a quadrillion chance" exists, when you use it in a story you have to be wary as it can easily break SoD. In this case she just... folds to a cheap poison that's known to be the first poison you use against Dryads (so she was probably poisoned by hit a few thousands of times previously) and a classic honeytrap (which once again is probably something she has experienced dozens if not hundreds of times by now). That's not even going into how even if you dismiss that she was attacked in one of the most common ways she has been attacked previously, at her level the sheer differene in stats and armour/resistance/poison resistance should just make her basically invulnerable given how we saw those things scale before. The story has been pretty clear that even a difference of a dozen level can mean "need to hit someone for minutes before they even notice", and said people aren't always tanks at all. The way the story is written, she might easily have billions of armour/resistance and appropriate immunities to the most obvious ways people will try to kill her.

Ok, I appreciate this perspective. You're saying that the scene subverts the sense of power progression, right? At least enough to be jarring?

Looting Pillager

The big problem with the plot Alexander has is we have all played games with stats, those stats are the meaningful representation of the progress our adventures give us. Most of the time we can get to a certain point where just the power of our stats alone can overcome enemies that are lower level than us because the stats do matter. So Alexander essentially walking right in and using a little roofie in a powerful dryads tea seems like an extreme minimizing of stats potential effects. It makes us question where did those stats go and how did this character get so high in level if a necromancer posing as a lovesick druid, using a roofie he got for a fairly cheap price defeat her without doing anything noteworthy.?

Adrian Secchia

I am curious what you didn't like about it, if you want to share.

Arkeus

Ah well, very disappointed. I guess believing that Alexander 's plot would just end with it doing nothing and hil dying was giving the story too much credit. I'll probably binge next year to see how it's handled.

Azgaroth

Thank for the chapter (i was thinking about the next part of the comment so i nearly written thank for the scumbag....). So scumbag is trying to manipulate/blight Ali's Aunt.... Ali get ready many circle of Purification/Cure and Regeneration inside the dungeon. I am sure after some time inside them, and with the team taking hit, you would be able to heal your Aunt. That would condemn scumbag to death via dismembering? With vines as the main "torture tools"...
