Tim Burget

Oh, I forgot to mention that Adaptable Shapeshifter's signature skill is a new skill, not an advancement on his pre-existing skills. That means not only will it consume all the other shapeshifter skills, it will also start out at level one. Yikes!

Tim Burget

That chapter title! I see what you did there. Get out of here with that pun! Anyway, guess it's time for Mato's class evolution! > the shrine notifications sprang into his mind with glowing green text gilded in gold Interesting. That sounds a lot like Ali. > +46 Authority. Between Calen and Ali, huh? > Aggression
> You have chosen to follow Azryet, the Dragon God. Upgrade your shapeshifting, taking the form of a dragon and eschewing all other forms. Enhance your damage in combat with dragon claws, and dragon breath.

> +25% spell power to Healing skills. Cost: 1
> Quality: Rare
> Path – Trait What is this, Shin Megami Tensei? There's both of the forms Discord suggested Mato might get! Unfortunately, they're both in paths I don't think Mato will take. And what's an "attribute" path? Have we seen one of those before? How are they different from trait paths? > On the other hand, there had been a time when he would have instantly chosen the path of Aggression, reveling in the ability to become a dragon whenever he wanted. Heh. > And dragons have to fly, he twisted his lips as he considered that wrinkle. LUL > “How are you even going to choose?” Ali asked. > “I think the young druid has already made his choice,” Lira said. Heh. > [Balance 4/8] +50 Strength. Nice! > [Balance 8/8] +50 Endurance. Sweet! Woah. Six keystone paths. Three for choosing a primary stat, and three for choosing a fighting style. In the stat category, we have Lirasian Sage for Vitality, Bark Sage for Endurance, and Thorn Safe for Strength. In the fighting-style category, we have Instinctual Tank (tank; seems like a good choice), Battle Healer (healer; that's a maybe, but probably not), and Bestial Rampage (berserker; *definitely* not). I'd pick Lirasian Sage because it's the only Rare path here, as well as the only one influenced by his mentor, and then Instinctual Tank to even it out. > I’m not sure what the sages do, exactly, but the Lirasian sage is about vitality, so that seems important. If I can only get one, I’ll take that one.” > “It’s obviously influenced by Lira,” Ali said, gesturing to the ancient dryad beside her. > “Yes, dear, I think he figured that out,” Lira smiled. LUL > Why would I need a path for ten endurance when I can just buy attributes directly? Heh. > Last Stand gains Receptive Restoration. (Last Stand improves healing received) Cost: 3 Nice! > “Oh, this is the troll berserker’s Last Stand, isn’t it?” Mato asked, his eyes immediately seeking out Ali. > “Looks like it!” Sweet! > Survival Instinct gains Instinctual Defender. (Your survival instinct works on attacks made against allies within your domain) Cost: 2 Neat! > To his relief, all the other paths remained Huh. That's a surprise. I figured the other fighting-style paths would disappear. > +1 Vitality per class level above 100. Cost: 1 Nice! > Rampant Growth gains Lirasian Sage. (+Minion. You can summon a Lirasian Sage). Cost: 3 Huh. Interesting. Is that "sage" as in the type of plant rather than "sage" as in "wise person." Heck, why not both? > That was the problem with this evolution. Too often, he felt as if they were searching blindly, playing some kind of cosmic lottery with hard-won skills and abilities. Heh. > “Oh, my,” Lira breathed. “You have done well, haven’t you?” > “What do you mean?” Mato asked as all his friends stared curiously at her. “Do you know what this is?” > “I had hoped… when I saw your path. I believe you will not regret choosing the Sage,” Lira said, smiling her most mysterious smile, yet he also read there a degree of hope that, frankly, amazed and concerned him. Was it truly this important? Hmmm... > Bark Sage path removed.
> Thorn Sage path removed. Alright, so the other stat paths *were* removed once he picked one. > Lira thinks it’s cool. Let’s keep the trust strong, alright? Heh. > [Battle Healer 1/5] +10% spell power to Healing skills Battle Healer said it had a path length of 4 when the description was shown. > Brutal Restoration gains Natural Blast (+Area. On critical damage with the supported skill, Brutal Restoration will emit a short-range blast of nature magic, healing your allies and damaging your enemies.) Cost: 3 Oh, nice! > But thirty-five percent to your healing seems strong, too. your -> my > I was chatting with Devan at the Challenge Arena earlier, and she was saying that Azryet’s Favor and Azryet’s Wrath both count as critical strikes delivered with her dagger. Interesting... > “How did you even test that?” Ali asked. “I bought a cheap dagger from Weldin that had a critical damage proc. It went off every time she got the blessing,” Calen said. > “Alright, pack the brains away before we all get jealous,” she teased, nodding to indicate her approval. LUL > “Ok, getting this one then,” Mato said, grinning at his friends. “You all can thank me in advance for the overwhelming healing in the future! Look out, Malika, I’m after your job.” > “Bring it on, fluffy bear!” she said, putting up her fists. LOL > Reachable Nodes:
> +50% spell power to Healing skills. Cost: 1
> Battle Trance gains Retributive Heal (Whenever you are hit, you may use Brutal Restoration for free. Recharge: 5 seconds.) Cost: 3
> Arboreal Sanctuary gains Breeze of Restoration (Mana: Your Sanctuary aura heals your allies over time. Channeled.) Cost: 3 Oh, wow! Those all seem strong! Too bad he can only pick one.... > “With Ali bringing shamans, we don’t struggle with any lack of healing,” she said. “Your mana would be making the shamans and my job easier, but nothing we can’t handle without it. I think you should save your mana for the abilities that make you tougher as a tank. You get hit a ton, so that Battle Trance upgrade will allow you to use your blast heal for free every five seconds. That should save a ton of mana for increasing your magical damage, stealing damage from others, and deploying your roots for battlefield control. Those are unique skills you bring to the fight that are much harder to duplicate.” All good points! Woah. Both options in this chapter's final choice look really good! I think Elemental Shapeshifter is better, though. It's a unique class path, fits Mato's build better, and grants access to the Holy and Void affinities. It'll give him a triple affinity! That's unheard of! Not even Ali has that! Plus, I'm really interested to be able to see the Void affinity in more detail, and I'm sure Ali is, too. On the other hand, Adaptable Shapeshifter sounds quite useful, but Mato already left behind the role of a generalized shapeshifter ages ago. Plus, it's only a rare class path. It also sounds like a worse dungeon, which doesn't exactly interest me. There's duplication of creatures and a domain, but it's not fixed in place. That's half of the requirements for a dungeon, but we already have a dungeon on the team. The telepathy while shapeshifted is quite nice, though.

Stefan Landshut

This... This has been driving me crazy

Purpleninja

It does feel abrupt, but I imagine the others were waiting on Ali to finish her work expanding her domain + letting the shrine recharge before they evolved, and with the time she spent working on the anvil they were ready and waiting for her return. Maybe a mention of getting back to Clarence at the end of the previous chapter or something else about heading back might help that feeling? It's difficult to solve from Matos PoV in this chapter. Anyway, I have a feeling Thuli is on his way and might interrupt or be heading towards them at the shrines Grove assuming he knows where it is / asks Kavé/ storms into the guild, after seeing the zone messages of the restoration then an evolution.

Adrian Secchia

Fixed, thank you!

Alex

Another con against Adaptable Shapeshifter is that Mato would lose all current shapes, and while this would open up to near infinite forms he'd have to study and learn new forms all over again...

oaclo

Considering he only really uses 2 forms anymore, Elemental seems like the only real choice. On another note, it seems kind of abrupt to go right from reforging a legendary artifact to this chapter with nothing in-between.

Alex

Elemental i get the feeling that void is rare and also hoping further down the line he'll be able to do a hybrid dragon-plant-elemental form. Or other hybrid elemental forms... Also adaptable could lead to decision paralysis when it comes to choosing what form would be best for combat at times....

Tanj

Elemental because the wisdom will help him against mind altering foes and the 35% should be good choices. I’d like to see the weapons an evolved Thuli can forge for Vivian.

Purpleninja

Man, im drooling at "Traits: Shapeshift, Wisdom, Nature, Void, Holy." His 13 authority remaining makes it odd to have two equal length paths, one frontloaded with a 4 cost skill and the other not. Surely adaptive would need those points for a potential re-tooling of his class, but... what's down that elemental shapeshifter path? Or maybe something tiny after it, though maybe he'll just have to spend on attribute points because taking only that first node from adaptable shapeshifter might break his class. Be ready to revert if you choose that option. Seriously, 'consumes all existing shapeshifting skills' takes away bear form and maybe Aboreal sanctuary (or just it's tree form w/ its massively important Vitality rejuvenation) if that advancement means it's a shape-shifting skill now. Natural prowess might also come out the other side either wonky or needing changed. Besides, wouldn't taking adaptive shape-shifting sort of crowd Ali's role?

Kensyi

Though Elemental Shifting could be cool as well. Here is hoping for Adaptive

Kensyi

Oof, both of those sound amazing, love the idea of Adaptive Shapeshifting

Mahetze

Telepathy sounds like something you could get through equipment/some runes, so I would not give it to much weight for the path selection

Thomas Underwood

The adaptable one seems the better one. It give him versatility of firm and telepathy is something he has wanted for a long time

Alexix

Thank you for the chapter! It was delicious! ---------------------------------------------------------- [Balance 3/8] +10% to amount blocked. After spending his fourth point, the nodes updated, showing him a new choice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ^The section above should say "third" point

zimmergage

Yeah I think elemental shape-shifting fits him better. Especially since the other one has a knowledge trait which doesn't suite him. Although it does have strength. I don't know the second seems like a think before you act and he's more of an act before you think

TheIronDragon

Oh, so hype to see what Mato chooses and how the paths unfold! Thanks for the chapter! Also, I'm super excited for Ali to heal the guildmaster! Really looking forward to that .

Dero_Dore

It consumes a point just to take the path, so he spent 4

Robert Mullins

He likes being a bear and a tree and he would have to relearn how to be anything else. Elemental is better.

Mull16

I don't think so his tree form is part of his arboreal sanctuary so it wouldn't free up that slot he'd just lose his tree form from that skill. He would also lose the vitality aura of his tree form which is a skill they really need. Also he'd have to individually level all the forms he unlocks. I think elemental shapeshifer is better.

Michael

Adaptable shapeshifter sounds better in a few ways. It even frees up a skill slot by consuming two slots which could be huge later. It’s rare instead of unique, though, and +35% as a first node sounds like a fine start to the alternative, so it’s not a slam dunk.

Axel Fremen

Mmmm, that's a yummy chapter

Chyre

> After spending his fourth point, the nodes updated, showing him a new choice. I think that should be "third point", there. He's only spent three so far, at this point in the text.
