Chapter 350: A Magical Bloodline

Ali groaned as the world vibrated violently around her. A sadistic gremlin seemed to have crawled into her brain and was gleefully stabbing at it with a red-hot poker.
“I think she’s awake…”
Malika? Ali grasped for her memories, but her mind seemed to be a mushy blur of pain.

The vibrating sensation slowly abated, taking with it the demented mind-stabbing gremlin and leaving her with only a splitting headache and a profound sense of enervation. Her eyes cracked open to find Malika cradling her body, looking down at her with lines of worry and concern etched on her face.
“What… happened?” Ali said, her croaking no louder than that of a dying frog.
“Don’t scare me like that, ok?” Malika said.
Something had ravaged her mind, leaving Ali to rummage around in the chaos and clutter for answers. She had been trapped in a dungeon, struggling with fiendish puzzles. Her mind produced fractured images of a broken Fae and memories of voices gloating. Twisted twins. A maze full of shades. Her friends rushing in to save her. There was a spell, a gong, a golden light… she saw herself fading, just like her mother…
She had done something. Ali studied her arms, but the translucent look had vanished, and she looked uninjured. Was it just a dream? But a dream couldn’t explain the sheer exhaustion that weighed on so much more than bone or flesh.
“You were dying,” Malika explained.
“Dying?” Ali glanced about, finding her friends all gathered around her. She was still in the core chamber of the puzzle dungeon, and Gage and Cael still hung suspended in their golden cylinder – now pristine, the patchwork of her magic only visible to eyes as sensitive to mana as her own.
“You spent almost your entire life force on that spell,” Val’korr said, squatting beside them with the uncharacteristic warmth of concern radiating from his eyes. “You need to be more careful!”
“Ahh,” Ali groaned as she struggled to sit up, only managing with Malika’s gentle helping hands. “What about the shades?” Her minions stood idle at the doorway, and the only sounds reaching her ears were the whispered conversations of her friends and the faint hum of powerful magic.
“The dungeon restored the suppression field in the maze,” Calen said. “But they exempted this room, so we were able to wipe out everything within reach.”
“Thank you, Ali,” Cael said.
“Yes, thank you,” Gage echoed. And then, with anguished contrition, he added, “I’m sorry we were so mean to you.”
“You’re welcome,” Ali said, her voice slowly returning to normal. Are they so childlike, almost stunted, because of the isolation? What might they… become? Given time and companionship?
With no small amount of trepidation, she called up her notifications to see what had transpired.
Arcane Insight has reached level 66 (+2).

Sage of Learning has reached level 58 (+3).
While her eyes widened at the levels of skill growth she had just earned, nothing in that list shed any light on what had happened to her. But the next notification took her breath away.

Her Magical aptitude had blossomed into a full-blown bloodline. Ali’s heart began to thump harder in her throat. On one hand, a bloodline like Malika’s or her parents’ was a tremendous source of power. She had always known it lurked inside her – it was the supposed reason for her stunted wings. And… she eyed the broken form of the Fae suspended in the golden cylinder. What does this mean for me?
Not quite knowing how to react to the change, she searched for more clues.

Speechless, Ali called up the description for Arcane Recall. She knew the exact instant she had unlocked this, but her heart was a roiling mess of conflicting emotions.

It was her mother’s spell she had unlocked and instinctively used to save the brothers. The spell she had used to spend her life that Ali might live. She felt the squeeze from Malika’s hand before she registered the tears spilling down her cheeks.

She had earned a level, presumably mostly the result of defeating the puzzle that had been created to tie up the shades. Even with the enormous number of shades killed, most of that work had been Calen and the others, and most of the shades were too low-level for her to gain any experience. It seemed utterly trivial in comparison to all that had come before.
Ali took a deep breath.
“You ok, Ali?” Malika asked.
“Yes… it’s just a lot.” There were still a few notifications left, so she mustered her courage and pulled them up.

“Nice,” Mato said, nodding. “You got rewarded for saving these guys and for rescuing Naia.”
Ali nodded.
“I suggest you don’t wear that title, though,” Calen said, scratching his chin soberly. “I don’t think most people would understand.”
Ali slowly clambered to her feet, staving off her dizziness and weakness with sheer willpower and a little assistance from Malika. More than a little. There was a lot to unpack in her notifications, and something told her that what she had just done would have significance way beyond what they all could imagine. But as she took in the glittering golden cylinder and the brothers floating within, her heart was light. So, she clung to that as her reassurance that she had made the right choice, whatever it may mean.
“We should get you home,” Malika said, helping her balance.
“Yes, I think that’s a good idea,” Ali said. She would need to heal from the terrifying aftermath of what she had just done. She had spent nearly seventy percent of her maximum life repairing Cael and Gage’s life support, and it had happened in an instant. She was already suffering from domain withdrawal; any kind of dangerous encounter, or perhaps even a stiff breeze, ran the risk of killing her outright. She couldn’t afford to stay here any longer.
Health: 165/165(-68% Life Channeling, -10% Domain Withdrawal)
She hadn’t had such a low health total in a long time. It was almost as bad as having eight days of domain withdrawal, with the enormous downside that this would take much longer to heal.
“You’re leaving?” Cael gasped.
“Yes,” Ali answered. “I need Mato’s aura to heal me, and I probably need to rest for a while to recover what I just spent.”
“Please don’t go,” Cael pleaded.
“Please don’t leave us… alone,” Gage said, an edge of hysteria coloring his voice.
“I can come and visit when I’m healed,” Ali said, not wanting to leave the two of them feeling abandoned.
“You promise?” Cael asked.
“Of course. Now that I know you’re here, I’m not about to leave you by yourselves,” she said. Thinking about it a little more, she added, “Besides, you’re family.”
Her voice cracked badly over the words. They say you can’t choose your family…
To her grateful surprise, the Fae Construct simply nodded, his expression graver than ever, almost… she fought for a word. Serene? Holy? Whatever it was, it moved the very core of her being. This was right, she realized. Somehow, it was right.
More lightly, she added, “If you promise not to kill my friends, I will invite them to visit you, too.”
“Why would anyone want to visit us?” Cael asked.
“I know a bunch of crazy people who would love to help with your shade problem,” Ali said, smiling at them. She was sure Havok, Aiden, and the rest of the higher-level guild members would absolutely love grinding experience in this place, especially as they were growing close to hitting gold rank now.
“That’s a good idea,” Calen said, catching on instantly.
“Good training,” Malika agreed. “The shades are the perfect level for the guild.”
“I promise I won’t kill them,” Cael said, his voice hopeful now.
“You too, Gage. I don’t want any misunderstandings,” Ali said, biting her lip as she sounded exactly like a stern parent telling off a toddler.
“I promise!”
“Thank you,” she said, and turned to her friends, preparing to go.
“Ali?” Gage said, using her name more naturally this time. She turned to look at him – them both. “Thank you for helping us. I know we were very mean to you, and we didn’t deserve it, but you… you helped us anyway.”
“Of course, Gage,” she told him. “I’ll make sure things are better for you both from now on. Just please remember your promise, ok?”
“I will,” Gage said, a little hope creeping back into his voice. “And I’ll help Cael remember, too.”
Cael gasped, “Gage! That’s my job.”
“Sounds like a healthy sort of argument,” Malika said, reaching for Ali’s arm as she wobbled. “Easy there.”
Grinning down at them both, Mato rumbled, “I prescribe a cup of sweet tea and a light snack – Beaskin-sized. Let’s go.”

I believe because of this anyone with gold arcane mana like her library friend will have the ability to awaken the bloodline(magical, Fae) now I hope it’s named Amariel bloodline or something else than (magical, Fae)

Arcane magic comes easier to you, both learning and wielding it.)” This sounds very powerful, if requiring some practice before she knows what to expect from it. One possibility which comes quickly to mind is learning spells well enough to disrupt them after fewer exposures.

Mato and the herbalists in town have excellent (and rare) healing available for restoring maximum life. So she'll recover. It'll just take time.

They know that arcane magic is usually purple, right? So they'd know that gold arcane mana is odd (or at least Calen does). I think she's told them that she must be related to Ryn before?

I doubt it's much of a cost because variants below lv 100 seem to take up significantly less space in the book. Also, the more variants she collects and manipulates, the more skill levels she gets in her Grimoir and the more chapters she gains. So it's a bit of a moot point. My thought is that it is better to relentlessly level the skill and only worry about chapter cost when it actually becomes a limiting factor.

“Your Hellfire Imp has reached level 65 (+4) Your Hellfire Imp has reached level 64 (+4)” Assuming this isn’t a typo, it implies that her grimoire is keeping track of the advancement of multiple Imp variants separately. So, there’s an opportunity cost to maintaining specialized variants and summoning the right one for each fight (perhaps in multiple instances): she will advance each variant used less than 100% of the time more slowly than if she didn’t branch out her minions growth (and later evolution).

She does get a +50% multiplier on her intelligence and wisdom. Which are the attributes for both mana and mana regeneration.

Also, this reads like Ali's lost the multiplier on her mana and mana regeneration. I hope not, because that would be awful (at least without a much more powerful replacement than "you are really good at magic and can die for it if you want")

I'm ... Ok with this chapter. It's a nice development. ....I do feel like some of her skills haven't really advanced in a while despite getting a heavy workout. Maybe when they hit lv 60?
