As long as prices are free to drop, I’m not that worried about the deflation which will come from introducing new goods without more gold. That said, there are many customary and contractual reasons why there can be delays and dislocations as prices decline economy-wide (as they often did in the US during the 19th century under the gold standard). In modern times, central banks generally prefer predictable low inflation (the US Federal Reserve targets 2% per year). If the central bank of Ali’s domain could finely tune her coinage to a target like that, it would be an improvement compared to producing only goods and accepting deflation, but I doubt that Ali has visibility to local gold demand — let alone demand in Southport. Given that, I’d rather live with some deflation than risk localized inflation when she overshoots and the new coins take time to spread (new high-end goods create export opportunities worth teleporting for which will probably equalize deflation faster than new coins will equalize inflation, since many of the coins would be spent locally).

Gold has only minor direct use (unlike something more directly enchanted but potentially usable as currency such as mithril), so creating a lot of gold will crater its price. There are four main options to create goods: — Intermediate goods like spider silk which make the items crafted with them cheaper at equilibrium, but also help crafters advance to more difficult goods. This will redistribute income among crafters towards those with better access to the new supplies, but should make the city as a whole wealthier by improving the quality of craftable goods. — Final goods sold for cash like weapons unsuited to the team. These will cause changes in relative prices and could hurt crafters making similar items, but should overall increase the city’s wealth by adding things of value as long as the volume isn’t so high that it breaks existing production chains. However, unlike intermediate goods, final goods don’t do much to help the town further advance beyond the immediate benefits they provide. — Final goods for her own team like daggers for rogues. These should have little effect on anyone outside the team beyond the opportunity cost of having the team rely less on local crafters. — Gold or other currency. Minting coins which are only useful for exchange without creating anything new to buy with them will inevitably lower the value of coins and raise all other prices. This harms the value of people’s savings without helping anyone level to be able afford the new higher prices. In effect it transfers existing resources to Ali’s team instead of creating new resources, making the town poorer. I’m happy to see the coin imprint gone since minting currency seems like it has the worst side effects of any type of item creation, while intermediate goods, which have the best side effects, seem to be the path of choice going forward.

Huh, never knew that - cool :)

So once the roads and such open up, Ali could make a bu ch of coins and use them for importing goods. Spreading the coins created out would help make it gradual enough to not have too dire of economic effects.

Fun fact, a lot of the problems with the gold standard is that gold isn't valuable enough. The value of goods traded starts to vastly outstrip the value of the gold paid to buy those goods. Just isn't enough gold around to adequately serve as economic lubrication.

Ok, yes. I took a look and you're right, the numbers were off. I think I must have screwed it up in an edit somewhere. Regardless, I went and updated the +375% to +335% which is the correct number, fixed the totals and such. It also required a minor edit to the dialogue right after, but nothing that changes the intent/plot.

Chyre

I think there may be a minor typo in the numbers, in the part where Malika figures out how her Clarity buff interacts with Mato's Sanctuary aura. Sanctuary goes from +100% to +375% when the buff is applied, but her Clarity skill is only listed as giving +235%. Great chapter as always though!

InLucidReverie

Her domain ability includes anything she creates, so it aughta

Thanks for the chapter.

Ali... you don't need better minions you need to take time and study both your grimoire and Clarence, you might be able to find some kind of optimization for getting higher level creatures from the ones you already have. Like an actual 1 week study session between you, your shrine and Clarence instead of just boss rushing into the mines and complaining about not having strong enough creatures. You have study and comprehend and find enlightenment within your library get your other skills up. Maybe try and cast magic via other languages or the runic language. Getting stronger is an marathon that people has forced upon you because they hate those who are different get knowledge from your aunt no matter how insignificant. You yourself has seen how the system has categorized languages and such. Research and build knowledge that an path to go forward, study mana to the extreme from the dungeons you know study mana inside creatures, Clarence is there to help you, but before that you gotta help yourself and follow the first dream you had before everything went to shit

Adrian Secchia

Yep they do. The big issue with attacking fire elementals with fire is that most of them are immune to the bulk of the fire damage, and some of them even heal when hit with fire - which counters a lot of the additional damage.

Cameron Orr

I would be very interested to see if her customization was strong enough to passively build an exact match.

Danel4d

Lucky that Ali has extra mana just when she’s going to be losing it to learning a weird new language! I’m definitely intrigued as to why these elementals aren’t getting put into the normal chapter - wonder if it means that there might be potential to adjust them if she studies them? Though they do seem distinctly different from the normal kind of elementals. Thank you for the chapter!

Cameron Orr

I meant to be correcting the fact that she was floating on her shield and not standing. She had made a rather large point that she had her shield and so she didn't have to walk on the gross ground

InLucidReverie

Threshold is the whole space so it works fine as a metaphor rather than literal

InLucidReverie

Ali should connect her books to the domain just in case somone gets in

Drakenclaw

Thanks for the chapter. Shouldn't all of Ali's minions also do non-physical arcane and nature damage thanks to some of her skill upgrades? I thought at least a bit of that would get through and help her fire based slimes to actually do some damage? If that is not the case, those skill advancement Ali took are not really doing much. Or do the Hellfire-Elementals also have a very high magical resistance?

Scotty Tremaine

Thx for the chapter

Cameron Orr

and Ali suddenly found herself -standing upon- (floating above) the threshold
