Chapter 251: The Specter of a Guardian

TLDR: The increased chapter frequency will be staying.
I'm sure most of you have noticed the change to chapter frequency and length over the last month or so. Prior to the change, I was releasing full scenes as single chapters, regardless of length. This resulted in an average chapter length of about 5.5k words, with some creeping up over 8-10k occasionally. What I'm doing now is splitting some of the larger chapters and releasing more frequently. This results in slightly more words per week, with a cadence and pacing that I feel works quite well.
With this change, we should be hitting 40 advanced chapters on Patreon this week (up from 20). I will probably push this up to 50 over the next couple of weeks. I feel this provides a much more competitive offering for all of you.
The change is substantially boosting rankings with the algorithms over on the public servers. On Royal Road, we jumped to almost 10k sustained views per day and moved up from page 6 to page 3 on the popular this week list. On Scribblehub, we were trending at #1 several times over the last couple of weeks. Overall, I'm very happy with the story's performance.
I've received a lot of positive feedback regarding the release frequency - in comments, messages, and on discord, so I will endeavor to keep the frequency high. I'm not ready to commit to daily chapters every week, but I think 4-6 every week is sustainable, with the absolute minimum being the Tuesday/Thursday/Sunday advertised schedule.
There were some folk who raised concerns on Discord regarding where the splits are made that gives rise to some chapters that feel too small, or that nothing meaningful happens. Or that the boundary is awkward. I'm taking this complaint seriously, and I will be releasing some larger chapters whenever I can't find a decent place to put a break.
Obviously, I'm still open to feedback, and this will be an ongoing balancing act for me. Just reach out in comments or discord if you have some feedback to share.

Seth studied the giant monster grown from living wood and bark, slowly meandering on its long patrol around the shrine grove, creating a broad swathe of wildflowers and mushrooms wherever it wandered. He had seen this boss several times, and it had always felt so powerful, and so far off – but here he was, with an army of wolf skeletons and zombie bats, facing it for the first time.
“Everyone ready?” Aiden asked.
“Ready,” Seth said. I’d better be ready, after all that. The entire raid group had taken an enormous detour earlier to wipe out the easier Timber Wolf and Storm Shaman bosses, just to give him the opportunity to replenish his undead army with goblins, wolves and the larger bats that inhabited that area. After having everyone go so far out of their way for his benefit, he couldn’t afford to mess up. No. I am ready. He rolled his shoulders, feeling several snaps and pops from his tense muscles.
“Remember, we want to hit forty so we can go face that slime boss with new skills,” Aiden continued. “But safety comes first, we haven’t fought this boss before, but we know some of the strategies. Make sure you get your elixir from Basil so that you don’t get knocked out.”
Seth checked his storage one more time, making sure he knew where his recall potion was, and where his elixir was.
“Ok, Havok, Seth – when you guys are ready,” Aiden said.
“Havok good,” the Goblin said, nodding his head up and down enthusiastically.
“I’m ready,” Seth echoed, walking with Havok to the small open space, soon to become their battlefield, with his army clacking along behind him. The ground shook. It shivered beneath his feet again and again as the giant elemental’s legs struck the ground one at a time, drawing it further and further into the clearing.
“Havok, go!” Aiden shouted.
The Goblin lit up with intense holy light and charged off, leaving a trail of holy fire consecrating the ground behind him. There was an enormous crack as his holy shield slapped the elemental and it raised its head with a fearsome, tree-shaking roar.
But Seth was too busy to be scared. All his skeletons charged down after Havok, arriving at the scene just a little after the Goblin who was now furiously engaged with the giant, immensely powerful behemoth of wood. But Seth’s job was different. He directed his minions to attack all the Spore Spreaders and Floral Menaces that followed the Forest Guardian around, each one getting the attentions of two or three skeletal wolves, and then he began to move, slowly dragging them to the side. His job was to take care of the minions, but he wasn’t about to ignore the main fight.
With a thought, he cursed the Forest Guardian with Life Tap, granting a little extra healing to each person who hit it, and then proceeded to curse each of the boss’s minions with Amplify Damage. His skeletons wouldn’t need life.
He was backing away, keeping his distance, when suddenly a giant explosion of petals filled the air, obscuring all his skeletons. Immediately, he switched to Eyes of the Damned, seeing through his minions instead. First, one, and then the second Spore Spreader planted themselves, summoning mushrooms that exploded in great clouds of spores, entirely hidden within the petals. But Seth was too far away for it to matter, and undead were immune to sleep.
That should be far enough, Seth thought, tuning out the main battle for now. Nobody had been hit by the clouds as Havok had pulled the Forest Guardian in the opposite direction, splitting them further, and out of range of the regeneration aura it supposedly had. Which means…
He cast Volatile Wraith – a skill that had leveled substantially from extensive use. The volatile undead spirit shot out into the cloud of petals, biting whatever lived, and then it detonated in a devastating explosion of death magic, amplified by his curse. He felt the familiar rush of life drain returning health to himself, and simultaneously the explosion healed his skeletons. He cast Volatile Wraith again, and again – a shrieking storm – until the Floral Menaces and Spore Spreaders all collapsed.
“Attack,” he commanded, sending his skeletons charging down to engage the Forest Guardian. Roots and vines sprang from the ground all around the giant monster, reaching to grapple his minions, but Teagan thankfully held them at bay with a single Free Action totem.
“Bats!” Kaitlyn called out, sending arrows arcing skyward.
“Go,” Seth commanded, directing his bats to join in the fight, and then he fired off a Volatile Wraith. So high in the sky his wraith would not hurt his team, but they would heal his zombie bats from Kaitlyn’s devastating lightning arrows. Carefully, he cursed each bat with Amplify Damage, making them drop much quicker.
“I’m keeping up with Havok’s health,” Teagan called over. “You can switch curses.”
“Ok,” Seth said, and with a thought, he swapped his curse on the Forest Guardian with Amplify Damage.
“Oh yes!” Devan exclaimed, burning several cooldowns and quaffing a damage-enhancing potion.
Damage freak, he thought. He would never tell her that, but the others most certainly teased her about it. But he knew she loved his Amplify Damage.

The fight took a long time, but Teagan kept reassuring them they were making steady progress. Halfway through the battle, Basil got really busy making more mana potions for everyone who had miscalculated and run out. But eventually, his chime sounded.

Oh yes, I got four levels! He sat down right there on the grassy hill and scrolled quickly past the skill notifications. He would study them in detail later, but he wanted to see what he had unlocked.
“Holy shit! Is this magicite?” Braden yelled out across the grove. “Look how big it is!”
“The boss dropped three Living Essence!” Devan yelled back excitedly.
But Seth ignored them; loot could also wait for later.

Specters! Seth had been filled with hope ever since Ali had shown him the troll specter, but he knew it was by no means a given that he would get it. It was a skill he had even seen Alexander Gray wield. He had tried to downplay his eagerness to earn the skill, but now that it was here, his excitement rose, rushing through his body. It wasn’t even a choice, Grave Pact and Raise Ghoul were both good, and he might make the decision to make space for them by discarding another skill, but he immediately chose Raise Specter.
“Can I have that, please?” he asked, pointing at the giant corpse of the Forest Guardian.
“Sure, I don’t see why not,” Aiden said.
“What do you want it for?” Teagan asked.
He smiled and cast Raise Specter. The corpse of the Forest Guardian was suddenly suffused with an ethereal ghostly light, and something huge rose from the corpse.
“Come,” he commanded. Even though he was expecting it, the sight of the giant specter of the Forest Guardian stepping out of its corpse and passing right through the body as it walked over to him made his heart race. Now this is something!
“Holy shit, Seth!” Aiden exclaimed, wide-eyed in shock.
Forest Guardian Specter – Undead Wood Elemental – level 40.
Your reserved mana has increased by 291.
Oh wow, that’s expensive! But just looking at the massive monster, he knew it would be worth it. Eager to figure out what he had earned, he opened his specter’s class sheet and began to study its skills and aptitudes.

Ali’s notifications chimed the end of another tough battle.

“Next time, let’s try not to fight so close to the Grim Totem,” Ali said as she surveyed the wreckage of the small troll dwelling and the clearing it had been built in. The mana flowing out from the gruesome construct of bone and blood-drenched moss had been doing something to the dungeon trolls. She just had no idea what.
The results spoke for themselves though – they had won, but barely. Once again, most of her melee minions lay dead in great pools of blood. The berserker troll had not held back in her efforts to destroy Mato, cleaving through the huts, trees, and Ali’s minions with her greataxes like they were nothing more than paper and twigs.
Ali’s chime had sounded earlier, informing her that she had leveled up, so she glanced over the notifications. Fighting the giant berserkers seemed incredibly rewarding – presumably a direct consequence of just how dangerous they were.
Grove Warden has reached level 85.
+10 attribute points.
Arcane Insight has reached level 47.
Arcane Recall has reached level 16.
Barrier has reached level 56 (+2).
Martial Insight has reached level 56 (+2).
Empowered Summoner has reached level 43.
Identify has reached level 19.
Neat, but these levels are definitely getting more expensive. Ali quickly spent two points on perception, and four each on intelligence and wisdom.
It had been touch-and-go near the end, the female berserker troll no less powerful than her male counterparts, and perhaps a little more cunning. Maybe that’s what the dungeon is doing with the totems, she thought. The common theme seemed to be that the trolls around the totem were more deceptive in combat and trickier to fight – occasionally they shouted annoying rhymes, and most of her trollish minions would become unruly and harder to control – but it was hard to quantify, and Ali couldn’t tell if it wasn’t entirely in her head.
Regardless of what had happened, she needed the Grim Totem to be gone – and, by the scowl on Malika’s face, she wasn’t the only one thinking it. So, she flew over to it and deconstructed it, and all the plants that had been growing on it, and, as soon as it vanished, the strange knots in the domain mana began to dissipate, and she sighed away her unease and immediately her chime sounded again. Ali checked the message.
Your Forest Guardian has been defeated.
This time, at least, the notification from back home was not a big surprise. During the fight, she had sensed her Forest Guardian under attack back near the shrine, but aside from quickly verifying that it was Aiden and Teagan’s raid group, she had not devoted much attention to it. But now, having seen the notification, she quickly checked in, finding the group tired but happy, sitting beside the corpse of her second-ever raid boss. As she watched, Seth got up and did something to the corpse, and then to her astonishment, a ghostly apparition rose from the fallen Forest Guardian.
So those troll specters came in handy after all. Good job, Seth!

Glad to hear you took our feedback <3 I personally would suggest putting less emphasis on progression during the course of an arc. For instance, a skill doesn't have to be decided on immediately, when the team are in so much danger, so some advancements can be put into one scene more often. I think that you often give the characters TOO MUCH time between fights, so they always have the freedom to think deeply on advancement, slowing down the pacing

For her intelligent monsters, she can just tell them and they will remember. For the less-intelligent one (like slimes or bats), she will have to monitor them explicitly.

Well, that's an ominous chapter title. Ooh, was I right about my guess that Nevyn Eld was trying to bring back Elowynn (a *Guardian* of the Realm)? Could also be referring to Seth raising one of Ali's Forest Guardians as a Specter, I suppose. Seems like my second idea for the meaning of the chapter title is the correct one. It's a little too early to discard the idea of the chapter title having a double meaning, though. You know what? What would happen if Ali was to Dismantle the connection from a Greater undead to the necromancer that summoned it? I don't think Lesser undead inherit the souls of their source material, so doing that to one of those would likely have the same result as severing the connection between a dungeon and one of its summons, but what about Greater undead? From what we can see from Alexander Gray's perspective in Chapter 152, Greater undead seem to retain the souls of their source material, but with a compulsion to follow the necromancer's will. What, then, if the link to the necromancer is severed? Glad to see that my first idea for the meaning of the chapter title didn't end up being true (yet). So if Nevyn Eld does somehow bring back Elowynn as a Greater undead, and Ali is able to use Dismantle to sever his control, Ali happens to know a friendly necromancer that could *maybe* provide the mana cost necessary to keep an undead from expiring. (I say "maybe" because there are a lot of reasons why that probably wouldn't work. We don't know if providing the mana cost for an undead you did not create is even possible, and a hypothetical undead created from Elowynn would probably be too high-level for Seth, to name a couple.)

Hey @Timewalk, random question: Can Ali "program" monsters not to attack people? Like, to only attack non-humanoids or something? It occurs to me that the silver rank kids are now about the right level for the wild magic jungle, but getting them down there would require a way to get past the anti-demon poison bosses, guarding the library entrance.
