I considered many names for this character, including ones that were suggested by readers.
One name I felt would have worked would have been Clark, Superman’s real first name, but I also felt it was a little too on the nose for the big guy in glasses. A good name, and one I might choose if roleplaying as someone like this, but not the best choice for a canonical comic name.
As I was searching through a baby name book using keywords (as one does), I was searching for keywords of the smarty-pants variety. I’m not saying this guy’s a genius or anything, but I felt it might fit given that he’s got a classic nerd theme going for him, if nothing else.
And that’s when Conan came up. Conan, which can mean wise, praised, exalted, etc, and is a name shared with a famous fictional barbarian once portrayed on film by Arnold Schwarzenegger, famous bodybuilder and actor.
This was also on the nose, but there’s juxtaposition at play, and it makes me think of this guy dressed like a barbarian, so…
Yeah, it won.

The "depth of field" blurring in frame one is interesting, but seemed a little strange? It might have worked better if you could have had several layers with varying amounts of blurring, but I suspect that would take way more work than is practical. In any case, I am really enjoying your stories, and your art work. I have been following your work almost since the very start, and your improvement in both story telling and art work is impressive. Your constant efforts to improve make me glad to be supporting you.

And it's mostly because of Arnold that Conan is now saddled with a Germanic accent, despite the fact that Howard wrote him as coming from a proto-Gaelic culture. That and the fact that due to the fall of Rome, most Westerners envision fur-clad proto-Germanic tribesmen when they think "barbarian". But how cool would it have been for movie Conan to speak with a thick Scottish brogue as his "barbaric accent" :D

I've heard the claim that Robert E. Howard named his barbarian "Conan" because it was a fairly commonplace name at the time, so it would have sounded like "Kevin the Barbarian". That backfired a bit, since the character became so popular that people now immediately associate the name Conan with the fictional barbarian.
