No seriously this is possibly the most self-indulgent storyline ever.
Commentary
It's in Minion's job description to judge everything I do, so he can't technically be rude to me.
I think.
Genres
I did not look up how other people define the genre, or what other people consider the tropes of these genres. I've read enough that I simply have my own perception of the genre(s), what I would / would not include, sub genres, sister genres that can overlap, etc.
Which is hilarious to me. Do you know how many stories I've read that begin with an engaged woman being dumped at a party while being accused of bullying?
Because I sure don't. I've lost track.
My Next Life as a Villainess
At the end of a day that was mostly spent crying, I decided to try reading the first manga volume of My Next Life as a Villainess. It was something I had sitting in a wish list on a whim, and looking for something to occupy my mind with, I decided to get it.
The themes of reincarnation and kindness brought me out of my sadness, and had a disproportionately huge impact on me given the timing of when I read it.
(Seriously, don't underestimate the impact of the context of when a story is first consumed.)
Anyway, that was my start down the path of reading stories with similar setups, and ye GODS are there a lot of them of wildly varying quality. I don't actually want to bring up the "wildly varying quality" part, it feels mean, but I feel it would be irresponsible not to.
Also? Some of them get REALLY dark. Someone might be thinking "ah ha ha villainess antics" AND THEN THEY READ THE DARKEST NONSENSE EVER.
But a lot of them are pretty chill! Yay!

I yearn for a villainess costume!

"My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!" is the only one I've ever heard of, and only because there's a really good Bloodborne crossover fic involving it, called "Maria Campbell of the Astral Clocktower"
Val Salia
I see I'm not the only one who's seen that this is such a hot and well-represented subgenre that it is pretty much an established THING by now! (I read like four of the dang things)

Isekai stories are my comfort animes.

Yeah, "My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!" is loads of fun. It works in large part because the protagonist is not only nice, but also clueless and fundamentally BAD at being the manipulator she's sort of trying to be. The fact that one of the attempts of the world to get the plot back on track results in her friends defending her by saying she's too clueless to have pulled off what she's accused of, and her not being sure if she's being insulted or not, really epitomises how the series works.

Good choice. _Destruction Flag Otome_, aka _My Next Life as a Villainess_, is a classic of the genre. It's also a little bit of a subversion, because Bakarina's ability to be the villainess of the story is about equal to Kazuma from _KonoSuba_'s ability to be a traditional isekai protagonist, but it's seriously one of the best in the genre.

I think this may be the first time I'm not in on the reference.

No clue what these are but yay for a little self indulgence!
Warren (Stephen) Rose
Whoo! I tagged my partner in the first comic, simply because of the mood and catgirl content. The villainess being based around that anime trope is specifically their jam! Much appreciated content ππΉ

Glad to see you indulging your villainess interests!

Doooo it, I love a good villainess story. ^.^

I did not know that this was a thing. I'm not sure if I am better or worse off now that I know that this is apparently a thing.

This is actually an entire sub genre? Only one Iβm familiar with is βIβm the Villainess, so Iβm Taming the Final Boss.β β¦ Of course thereβs an entire sub-genre. The moment someone makes a specific anime thatβs different, more pop up.

"wildly varying quality" is pretty spot on actually... even inside of the same series at times, such as the aforementioned Bakarina.

Very specific

For those not aware that this is a whole subgenre (warning, the below URL goes to TV Tropes, so follow at your own peril): https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RebornAsVillainessStory

Yeah, it's actually at a point where I want to look up some stuff about the Otome Game Genre, just so I can understand where all the Villainess Manga are coming from.
