My theory is that the 3 seashells had to be invented because everyone in the future was eating Taco Bell all of the time and toilet paper was not enough...

I never thought about it, but this sounds the most plausible. We never see the seashells getting lifted up. So they might as well be buttons, that just activate a bidet.

I think the 3 seashells are just buttons for a fancy bidet. One for soapy water to clean and sterilize your asshole/balls/vagina. A second to rinse with plain water. And the third to blow dry.
