The UK had just lost a bunch of colonies by 1998 and if they didnt give Hong Kong back to China it would have been war between the 2 and China could easily take it back and UK wasnt strong enough at the time to fight a super power the otherside of the world. That is what I know about that deal.
The long and short of Hong Kong was China "We can just take this back" Thatcher "Yeah but the world will see so negotiate" and well...... thats what that was.
