few months down the line but same boat as nicoletti, subbed for this and a bit disappointed that you missed a fair number of (imo) quite easy to get meanings. substance was the big one for me, seemed like the song wasn't really being listened to at all even after you read the lyrics. it's a double entendre, past demi looked for drugs, present demi is looking for meaning in life.

I subscribed specifically to watch this reaction. I’m really sad to know you didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought you would. I think maybe having more information about the HOLY FVCK era and had the meaning of each track to read afterwards would’ve been helpful, so you knew what to expect and could answer any questions after the fact. It felt like it would’ve been better if you waited to make this video when you were feeling more rock-y or took breaks when you were feeling overwhelmed. Usually your Demi reactions are your best and I hope you’ll still react to their future releases. Regardless, I loved seeing your reaction! I am so glad I put a subscription in for this because I have been WAITING for this review. In my opinion to some songs, Substance is definitely about wanting something valuable from LIFE, Come Together is about reaching orgasm simultaneously with their partner, Dead Friends is all about their survivors guilt from friends that have people that died. Overall this album proves that Demi is MEANT to do rock music and hearing the rock versions of other songs they put out (Heart Attack and Cool For The Summer) show this is their destiny.

This was my first time listening also and I really loved Eat Me and 29. Other than that, I felt it was a lot of Disney rock, just took me back to that Demi and not in a good way honestly. I loooove rock but I just feel like Demi doesnt have that grit I want in a rock voice. Like its weird to say but her vocals are like too clear?? I guess... This album wouldve been great if it was Paramore singing it since I feel like Hayley Willams wouldve done that rock voice that I wanted better honestly.

My favourites are Skin Of My Teeth, Eat Me, Happy Ending, Feed, 29 and 4 Ever 4 Me. I personally love the album but I understand and respect that it's not your favourite. It can be heavy for some to listen to in one setting. I also think it was different for you because you clearly didn't know it was a full on rock/punk album. Demi wanted to go back to their roots but this ain't Disney anymore. Interesting fact: Since Heaven is about how being raised as a Christian impacted them in regards to their sexuality, the "cut if off" in the pre-chorus is a direct reference to the Bible - Matthew 5:30: "And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into Hell." Also, Dead Friends is literal. Demi is suffering from survivor's guilt and wonders why they survived while so many others did not. Some people might be taken aback by the blatant honesty but that's what I love about Demi.

'Substance' is actually a double meaning song! She's talking both as the old Demi who was with her friends always trying to get high, looking for hard substances, but knowing that there was something more. But when she sings it now, she's talking about how she's looking for metaphorical substance -- something real, something more than a high. And she feels like she's crazy because all her friends just want to get high, but she just wants everything to mean something again!

You really ate me on "Eat me" :) :) Well, i really like the fact that Demi gets her own musical paw and that she loves what she's doing, goo for Demi. But eventually, in most of the songs, i have been lost because of how loud the sounds are. I can't hear her very much eventhough she really sing.

I might as well post it down here - It's well known that 29 is about Wilmer. There were even rumors that he was suing her because everyone knew it was about him (not sure what happened to that). They dated when Demi was 17, but in interviews she said it was once she turned 18. His current wife is 12 years younger than him and it's the same age difference between Demi and Wilmer. The song came about because Demi realized once she turned 29 years old that she was the same age as he was when he went after her when she was 17.

Girl like I dunno I love you so much but it almost feels like you lost a spark for the artists we saw you love. This and beyonce I thought youd go wild over them but you just seem so sad about it. What you loved I felt the same and loved too so how can I feel the same again but you just don't. Her vocals in "forever for me" at the end was heavenly and you didn't seem to even care or react :/

I am already loving this, i am listening to it for the first time with you and only 5 minutes in and GOD its giving 2000's rock and IM HERE FOR IT

This is one of my favorite albums last year, her going back to rock and doing it justice and having punk rock, soft rock and switching up the sound in almost all of the songs is a treat, and the most thing I enjoyed was the lyrics.. she played in words and referenced her eating disorders/ substance abuse struggles in a playful manner in so many of these songs, and even referenced religious ideas/words (hence the album cover). I went to her concert for this album and she obsoletely smashed it and made me love the album even more. Amazing reaction as always <3

This was my first listen also. Were you possessed during Eat Me😂❤️ your reaction alone made me go back to that song immediately 😂 Demi has such a good voice and there are some beautiful melodies hidden in this record but the overbearing rock production drowned everything out and at times I found it unlistenable. BUT I applaud her for baring her soul with the lyrics and singing her heart out, she truly is an artist - this album really does resonate if you’ve ever had problems with addiction and for that reason alone, it deserves a lot of chances. Look forward to the next reaction x

this was probably the album that surprised me the most last year in terms to just how much i enjoyed it. i really enjoyed demi's return to rock and loved her vulnerability and honesty on this album. with that being said, HAPPY ENDING connected with me almost immediately and made it into my top 20 for most played songs last year. if you've struggled with mental health or substance abuse, that song is an absolute winner. i also liked 29, WASTED, DEAD FRIENDS, and 4 EVER 4 ME. looking forward to midnights and sos!!

Overall, the album hits hard, I have been listening to most songs since release and they feel fresh every single time. I love the whole rock genre and seeing Demi infuse her melodies, belts and her overall style in it was so refreshing. Her sincere lyrics were also something I really enjoyed on this album. It feels like such a lengthy project, 16 tracks, even though it's only 47 minutes, I was tired too, I love when any song from the album comes on shuffle, I can sing along and dance and just have fun, but the saturation of the album is just a bit too much for me to listen as a whole project in one sitting. Also I think you were thinking of Anyone from her previous album when Feed reminded you of something, it's that ascending melody which is very similar. Super excited for Midnights, gonna be fun.

in Dead Friends the tone is so odd because she wanted it to be an ode to the music her friends loved. It started as a piano ballad, but yes it's literal.

In Substance she means as in substance in things, meaning in things. the casket part hints at the fact that she doesn't want to go through life and die, without having meaningful things around her. It can also have a double entendre of course, but it is mainly about just wanting to live a meaningful life and not go in the grave without having done that.

She was talking literally about her dead friends, when she survived the overdose she felt like survivors guilt because a lot of her friends that she made on rehab lost the battle against drugs. At first time the song would be a ballad, but Demi thought it was so much sadness and made it like this because it feels like an anthem for her friends that passed away
