I had initially gotten hooked on the normal version of the album, but The Anthology just grew so much on me! Ajay I finally subscribed here and YouTube after seeing clips of you on TikTok, and I must say I’m disappointed with this comment section, and it doesn’t reflect all fans. I enjoyed your reaction. This album gave me whiplash. I was very unsure on the first listen. Basically all of the songs needed time for me. The Anthology is by far better imo than the original album, although I do enjoy both. I do have some qualms with her about her personal life surrounding the songs, but I had to zoom out in order to enjoy. These songs are as if Taylor put music to her journal and edited nothing. It’s messy, conveys desperation, isolation, vulnerability, self-awareness, and simultaneously it’s also not very self-aware. She knows she’s the anti-hero, but doesn’t seem to change her behavioral patterns sometimes. It threw me off personally that some of the lyrics were goofy, but then she’d turn around and do her poet thing in the next verse. I think she must have meant it to be that way, because perhaps that’s how her mind and nervous system were during this period. Also, The Manuscript is about how the pain from a relationship to a much older man (she was too young, Jake Gyllenhaal, ages 20&30) turned into something beautiful when she created the All Too Well short film. It seems to go through the whole process lyrically, so listen to it with that lens and you’ll enjoy it even more! Definitely give the album some time, like you said, and maybe you’ll come around after you finish digesting. I would be so interested to see a revisit down the road from you with this album. Although, I must say that your analyses after one listen are incredibly impressive, because I was stuck on stupid after pretty much every single one on the first listen. The fact that everyone expected this album to be about a long-term relationship ending, but instead heavily surrounded an apparent 10 year situationship with a person who is pretty universally disliked had me shifting in my seat a bit. Of course all that is speculation, but there are too many details to not believe that it’s what she wants us to believe. More so than the relationship stuff, it highlights her relationship to the media/fame, and all of the unfortunate things that have happened to her since she entered the really public scene at as a teenager, a very person-shaping age range. If you don’t come around to it, that’s OK! It’s different than all of her other albums and for that reason, I think it’s polarizing. I truly believe this album isn’t for everyone, even every TS fan. The reason I think it may grow on you is that I’m also a folklore/evermore person, and while the songs do all sound the same at first, you might start to see what makes each of them unique. It took some time for me, and I still have opinions specific to myself, but I overall love this album and it guts me on a regular basis to the point where I have to put it down. All in all, I always enjoy your reactions so I’m glad to be here! Guys, we don’t get to enjoy positive reactions and then be mad about anything less than pure excitement. This album was a question mark for a LOT of fans at first. Ajay was honest here and I’m glad she was. This makes me wonder if that’s why she hasn’t posted it on anything else.

personally, i have zero issues with the fact that THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT isn’t exactly innovative on a sonic level. i don’t think it needed to be and it’s clear that wasn’t her intention with this album, what with choosing producers/collaborators that she’s comfortable with and having a much stronger focus on lyrics, even with the way the album has been promoted. i think much of what she accomplished on this album was exceptional, even if it doesn’t go against the grain of what she’s done before. i really don’t think there’s anything wrong with an artist sticking to a sound that they’re comfortable with, and i think that, to a degree, it was probably necessary for her to do so to write her, arguably, most personal and unfiltered album yet.

I fully believe you'll come to love part 2 since you're such a fan of Folklore and Evermore. Aaron Desner, the primary producer of those albums is also the primary producer on the second half of TTPD. And of course we know you love Jack Antonoff (Reputation, Midnights, Melodrama main producer) so it makes sense you would initially resonate harder with part 1, which he primarily produced as well. (Not to say they didn't both participate in both halves, they're both heavily involved in all of her recent releases.)

From what I gathered from the interwebs Taylor recycled a lot of old songs on purpose to tie these songs back to her old albums! It took me a minute to really get into the Anthology tracks. If I did have to chose an pick, it would be the Anthology ones though. I just feel like the production is more enjoyable (granted I am a Folklore/Evermore girlie). However, I think the album as a whole is definitely a work of art. I enjoyed it and I am glad that Taylor decided to release both versions. It was a risk for scrutiny.

The Black Dog grew on me! It’s actually so heartbreaking about having someone you shared your location with and now you’re not together. I took that lyric 2 ways: he forgot to turn it off so she’s sad bc she can see what he’s doing, and then he forgot to turn it off bc he moved on so quickly he forgot about her pretty much entirely and isn’t even thinking about her or the location. “You forgot to turn it off” aka ‘you forgot that I exist and you have to unshare with me’ Also, the rock part where she sings “screaming”, prior to that she mentions the band The Starting Line and the music to that part of the song is very much the way they play music. So it’s a play on their musical style as well as her screaming the “screaming” lyric. She is just so good and thinks so deeply! The Manuscript is about her relationship with Jake G./ All Too Well song and short film. She was gaslit into the relationship bc she was so young but he told her she was so mature for her age it was “above board”/ ok. Plus she was legal and not underage which he knew after checking her license (literally idk). One of the most moving lyrics for me is when she talks about being so heartbroken she could only eat kids cereal (a play on her young age again) and sleep in her mom’s bed. When she talks about the actors hitting their marks and everything being In sync with the score I believe she’s talking about when they filmed the short film. And the end when she said the manuscript isn’t hers anymore it’s because she told the story and gave it to her fans. These are all just my opinions 🩷

the second half represents her journey healing from these two heart breaks. i think she also revisited old traumas and quite literally sonically mirrored her past work in order to provide a new perspective on these old traumas. that’s why i think a lot of it sounds like it could’ve been ‘recycled’, but i believe it was intentional. by the time you reach the end of the second half, it almost starts to seem like a ‘farewell’ in a way. she has said this album is a reflection on a time of her life that is over for good. i think that ‘time’ is the pain and heartbreak. she’s letting go of all of it in order to move forward as she’s finally found stability. i think the manuscript perfectly captures that sentiment.

I feel like this album is a lot harder to understand/connect with unless you somewhat know a bit of the lore behind it, so here i am as a resident swiftie to provide my perspective on it. Taylor has themed this album almost like a spiral into insanity, and then a retrospective into the past in order to heal old wounds. i think the first half represents her vulnerability after ending her 6 year long relationship + shortly after rekindling with an old flame, and re-experiencing the traumas she’s had over the years in that short amount of time. this person was an old friend, and lover, and still struggled with the same issues from their past. she called it a “mutual manic phase”.

Excellent reaction! I agree with you about the TTPD Part 1. But, both are growers I think because they are heavy lyrically. Definitely grew on me after 3 listens and now I appreciate both much much more. It’s the playfulness of speak now, pop from 1989, manic ups and downs from Red, edge from Reputation, lyrically and sonically from evermore, and synth/timeline from Midnights. It really is all her eras wrapped into 2 alums. these were written at the same time as Midnights, well they overlapped. So, some of the songs do sound the same. My faves from the Anthology: The Black Dog, The prophecy, so high school (its so fun), the albatross, how did it end.

It took 7 business days for me to fully process and fathom the album, and now it's one of my favorite TS albums. It's very complex and heavy, more than any other Taylor albums. You have to really sit with it and absorb it. Which makes it her most interesting album. The lyricism is even deeper and more vulnerable than evermore and folklore, while the instrumentation is very Midnights, 1989 TV, and folkevermore. It's a plethora of Taylor's work in the past 4 years, but on a higher and more grand level. Listen to the double album for 2 weeks and then revisit it for us. It will be a whole different experience.

In Greek mythology Cassandra had prophecies and tried to warn people and they would never believe her. Taylor is comparing herself to Cassandra. Song is totally about her telling everyone about the phone call and Kanye didn't clear that by her and people saying she's a liar and playing the victim, all the snake shit, but then when the truth came out that the call Kim showed was edited, nobody said anything, nobody apologized. Kanye and the family and the whole Sunday service church shit he had going on, the family that knew the call was edited. I'm not saying it's not valid, I just think that if she doesn't like a song because it sounds repetitive to her it's easier to say that "the song just didn't move me". Because at the end of the day Taylor and other artists have the complete freedom to do something they've already done. One example is Dua Lipa, who chose to make small changes to the genre she had already done to establish herself even more in it. So like I said, it's super valid when she or someone else doesn't like the song, I just think the comment "it's something she's already done" doesn't work. But, that's also my opinion on that. Artists have been expressing their emotions through art and profiting off it for CENTURIES. It's not a new concept. It is completely valid. Plus you're HIGHLY dismissing the trauma Taylor went through. It wasn't a simple feud. She was bullied, and harrassed to the point where she didn't even feel safe living in HER OWN COUNTRY. Also, your reaction to the reference to Aimee's kid singing Taylor's songs is wildly too much. You act as if Taylor cursed out Aimee's kids. She's just simply saying that Aimee will never forget the way she hurt her, because she will always express her pain through her art, which she may encounter on the radio, on social media, or by hearing it from her kids singing Taylor's songs.

Now that I've heard both in full, I agree with you. There's a lot of artists whose music sounds the same and it can be enjoyed because lyrically, you get the idea of growth and maturity. In her case, she's been over saturated in ways a typical artist is not. She's releasing new versions of old work while also releasing new work while also touring on old work and her new work. I think all of it, even the TTPD half, sounds the same because she isn't sitting down with complete removal from the past work. I also think she was focused on blending the songs together for random mashups on her tour stops because almost every song could easily slip into something she's already made. That part is fine, Beyonce has done similar. I think she'd benefit from a really long break after her album re-records are done. I also don't think most of the negative songs are about Joe; Those are all about Matt. Which is a relationship I still don't understand at all given how Taylor "loves receipts", so I guess she chalks it up to rebounding. The songs that are about Joe seem to be complaining about him being depressed in contrast to her constant need of color, excitement, and external attention/validation of their relationship. They easily could have met somewhere in the middle, but it seems he didn't want to and that would make me just as psychically damaged as she sounds on these albums when it sounds like he was a great person outside of being stubborn. The Kim K song...I kinda think she's holding back from really accessing that anger which is fine. I don't feel owed to that, since I still think the truth of it lies somewhere in the middle of both stories. I wish she referenced that man practically having a full on clone of her in a Frankenstein kind of way lyrically. At least she's still a good songwriter tho.

I do think though jack and taylor's work on ttpd was a BIG step up from the mess that was MIDnights. i'm sorry... i love taylor and am a huge fan of her music but the majority of midnights (especially the standard version) felt so uninspired. the production on it for me was just bland and boring compared to their work here which feels like so much more effort was put into it. but yes, all in all, i think jack and taylor have reached the limit to their musical collaborations (for now) and forcing it any further will just feel like the same stuff being pushed out in just different packaging. in that sense i feel like aaron should stick around in greater capacity than jack in taylor's next album cause if i have learnt anything from aaron's recent work on her album is that he is getting really good at making these country/rock, pop/rock and soft alt rock sounds for taylor (for eg: but daddy i love him, so high school, smallest man who ever lived, clara bow...and from speak now tv: when emma falls in love, electric touch....sure im missing some others) He is like nathan chapman but more versatile. i desperately need to hear aaron and taylor do a rock leaning album together next

The first half is almost all Jack, the second is mostly Aaron (folklore/evermore) Jack began working with T’s production for 1989 and up, less folklore & evermore. So you know each’s sound. I desperately need you to revisit The Black Dog with headphones, eyes closed, and LOUD. Florida was written by both Florence and T so that’s the blend. But it’s Florence’s sound. She’s a sober badass btw. In most songs she’s calling out the harmful parts of religion. Listen from the lens of someone who grew up being condemned for being themself. Sex shaming, young love, hypocrisies, you name it. She’s used lines of poems of famous tortured poets (Poe, Dickinson, Fitzgerald, etc. and worked their words into her tortured poetry, song form. It was dramatic on purpose. She took us listeners through different parts of her life, including feeling caged in relationships and by the media/fans “it’s hell to be heavenly” “I hate it here” “the albatross” “I’m so depressed I act like it’s my birthday. I think her throwing out Florida a couple times on the album was a political move in this election year. Like, it’s where fucked up people go. Robin is about Robin Williams (death by suicide.) She’s referencing different characters he played in films. So many death references point me to her closing a life chapter, blending all her old sound for the fans and then peace out for a bit. Maybe have a baby. Fortnight is about this struggle I think. Post is her and then she is post. They are lying on pages flown around to land in the shape of Taylor’s head. Then she gets shock treatment! From the Dead Poet’s Society actors. And in this light, she saves herself. IRL she broke up with long term beau (the slammer) and took the “heartbreak drug” which is another man, because he was familiar and told her he had sobered up. But seems like she realized he had not. First London guy was depressed and introverted. Second London guy was wild and toxic. Anyway, we can listen through any lens we want. She gave us the manuscript (a trip down memory lane breakups with many men, and she processed it all and gave it to us. She doesn’t want it anymore. That’s my shorthand take.

But, I don’t understand why people criticize so much when an artist revisits a sound they’ve done before, it’s her eleventh album, of course there’s gonna be sounds reminiscent of her past work, she in known for doing that with references in her lyrics so why not do it with the melodies? Evermore has folklore sounds, yet is unique, Midnights especially has sounds that make you think about all her albums and again, is unique. I think TTPD as a whole is such a personal album that Taylor said she needed to write. My guess is to close the door to all the past bad relationships & Kim Kardashisn drama. I think casual fans will never understand the album completely because to truly get it you have to be a true blue Swiftie from the beginning & really know her life & everything she’s been through. That said the album is not too much about Joe but mostly her 10 years situationship with Matty Healy who she rebounded with after the Joe breakup. Knowing this information makes the songs easier to understand the stories she’s telling. Regardless it’s a beautiful album that grows on you the more you listen.

I just think Ajay you focused a lot on the thought "it sounds like something she's done before" because Taylor is on her eleventh studio album, I think she has the freedom to return to other sounds if she wants. Generally new artists, especially women, are asked to reinvent themselves with each album and not every artist wants to reinvent themselves and do something that will be completely out of the ordinary. Sometimes the artist wants to further explore the sound he made on a previous album, and that's okay. In fact, we should encourage this more and deconstruct the idea that every artist must necessarily do something different. And good music it's good music either if is different or a little bit similar.

A lot of the fans say this version is a lot better than the standard version but for now, that's not the case for me. But don't get me wrong: I love The Anthology as well but it's safe to say that I also need more time with it. 31 songs all at once is really underwhelming to listen to, as much as I don't mind long albums. The "get him back!" by Olivia Rodrigo issue against this song created by the so-called fans here is absurd, though. Like, what?! • The Albatross - like you said, it reminds me of evermore as well! It's sonically pleasing. • So High School - I love the sound! Kinda reminds me of Lover, the title track, because of how in love she is. I love TTPD. I believe the demise of her two relationships in the spring summer of 2023 really rocked Taylor emotionally. Taylor herself she never needed songwriting more than when she was writing this album. She used songwriting to process those feelings emotions and in doing so I believe it caused her to reflect on all the past relationships and situations she has been in. I think that is why some of the songs harken back to previous songs or albums. I feel like this project is Taylor closing the door on the past relationships and traumas and moving forward.

The songs are so delicately layered and timeless with such beautiful lyricism that I feel fits the ‘tortured poet’ sound I was hoping for. don't worry about not enjoying it the first time around, I think the album as a whole is a grower, potentially because there are so many songs to try and take in at once. Personally, I enjoy the Anthology tracks more than the standard tracks because they feel like deeper cuts, and I'm also more of a fan of folkier sounds as opposed to the synth pop.

It’s weird to assume she’s disconnected from music in general just because she wasn’t that keen on this album. Even if you typically enjoy an artist, it can be exhausting to think about listening to 31 brand new full-length songs, majority of which are characterized by (very wordy) confessional songwriting and deeply entrenched in Taylor lore. Plenty of dedicated swifties also talked about being exhausted by the end of listening and couldn’t comprehend what was going on at some point because the volume of work got to be too much.

For your future listens from a sonically speaking standpoint all the choices made to sounds like other songs or be reminiscent of other older songs is 100% intentional, because there is a link to or a refathoming of that time for her. The capitals in ‘thanK you aIMee’ spell out KIM. This song is about what went down in 2016 when Kim Kardashian leaked an edited phone call with Kanye and Taylor and made people believe Taylor was lying, which made people harass her so much so that she moved to a different continent and wasn’t spotted for a year. Kim also gladly participated in helping Kanye make a revenge p0rn video for his music video for ‘Famous’ and went on to make multiple snide remarks throughout the years. In 2020 or 2021 the entire call between Taylor and Kanye got leaked and it turned out that Taylor was telling the truth all that time. Kim never apologised for any of it. This is also supposedly what ‘Cassandra’ is about; When it’s “burn the bitch” they’re shrieking, when the truth comes out it’s quiet.

Thank you, AJ! The entire body of work is so much to take in. I was left confused after my first listen. I'm a huge Swifty. So I went back in..several times. A week later I am convinced this is the best collection of music she's made, as a songwriter and artist. It grows on you so hard. The Prophecy is my fav heartwrenching song (and the power of giving her fans a voice to manifest goodness for themselves is so cool), and that line in How Did It End where she reverses "sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G" in the child's song to "my beloved ghost and me, sitting in a tree D-Y-I-N-G". I will never recover from that knife to the heart. LOL

The reason that it sounds like some of her older stuff is because she’s connecting her emotions back to those times, explaining the full scope of the relationship and how she felt, and how everything changed. I get not really clicking with the album at first but this is honestly her best work. She’s never been so brutally honest, I don’t feel like this album is meant to push pop boundaries or do well on charts, it’s very much an album Taylor needed to make so she has closure, catharsis and to move on from everything that has happened. I found TTPD & TTPD The Anthology to be brilliant albums, though I feel without a decent understanding of almost the 'context' of the songs and how they can be interpreted to Taylor's life, a lot of the lyricism gets lost in the production. They're albums I had to listen to multiple times to understand certain choices made, but choices that make the albums incredibly honest, personal and all around excellent bodies of works
