“Boss, I don’t think you’re going to be happy about this,” Lynne said to Mrs. Churchill as she walked into the office for the morning. “A couple of hours ago, someone pinged the Rachel Williams identity, Max’s mom, looking into her Social Security Number.”
“What the fuck, Lynne?” Mrs. Churchill grumbled. “We expected this kind of problem maybe a month or two down the line, but not within our first two weeks. Who’s looking into her?”
“That’s the part I think you’re going to be the least happy with. I don’t know. I should be able to know, but whoever’s doing this research, they are some serious blackhat, black bag, dark wizard shit hot hackers,” Lynne muttered. “I mean, this is way out of my level, and I’m one of the best fucking hackers I know. Whoever these people are, boss, they definitely mean business.”
“Don’t I pay you to mean business?”
“Boss, I assure you, I’ll do what I can to figure out who these characters are, but you gotta believe me when I tell you it’s gonna take time, and you may want to get Danny looped in sooner rather than later. I can’t imagine this shit’s gonna make his day much.”
“I’ll let him know in a bit,” Mrs. Churchill said as she walked across the room to the coffee pot, pouring herself some into a mug that read ‘120% That Bitch.’ “How’d we do last night? Where’s Max?”
“He got back to his place around 4:30 a.m., and both Jenny and Kelly crawled into bed with him, while Gwen and Brooklyn headed back to their AirBnB, just because there was no way they were going to fit into Max’s bed, and Max seemed like he was about to pass out.”
“Good lord, he must’ve barely had the energy to drag himself out of bed to prep the truck this morning,” Mrs. Churchill said with a chuckle before she glanced over at one of their screens, seeing Max still sound asleep in his bed, Jenny under one arm, Kelly under the other. She almost misplaced “Jacinda, why is Max still in bed this fine Monday morning?”
“You’re not going to believe this, boss, but he sent Frankie a text when they got back from Santa Cruz, saying he were going to take a week off from the truck, and that Carlos and Joey could run it as many times as they wanted to this week using last week’s menu and if Frankie wanted to help them out, he was welcome to it,” Jacinda said, leaning back in her chair, her bare feet up on the console. “But that he, Max, was taking a week or two off from the truck. He said he was too tired to be able to come up with an actual new menu this week, despite the R&D he’d done, and that he just needed some time away from the truck, so he was taking at least a week’s vacation. He’d figure out about next week later on.”
“No shit?”
“No bullshit, boss,” Jacinda laughed. “All it took was, like, 60 women throwing themselves at him all at once to throw him off his game. He finally just wanted to take a break from everything and let himself enjoy whatever’s happening to him.”
“And to get some sleep,” Carmen said as she was finishing her notes for the overnight log.
Jacinda snapped her fingers and pointed at her colleague. “And that. I think that more than anything may be the one thing we didn’t properly take into account when we were planning this whole thing. We’re going to have to start adding in more break times, more buffer time, more chances for this guy to recover a bit.”
“We’d already started talking about this earlier, Jacinda,” Mrs. Churchill said.
“I know, but it’s got to be more than just talk otherwise he’s going to have a heart attack before we get him across the finish line, and the number one mandate from Mr. Brand was that we keep Max alive,” Jacinda said. “We can’t let anything happen to him, and I think we need to let him sleep in as long as we can today, to give his body time to recover.”
The entire room had a bit of tension in it, Mrs. Churchill could sense, and she knew it was because everyone was worried she was going to be unreasonable and insist they stick to the plan. But Mrs. Churchill had been playing these sorts of games long enough that she knew when it was important to recognize how pivotal new information could be sometimes, and Jacinda was right – they hadn’t properly taken into account how draining this was going to be on Max. They’d sort of talked about it, but in terms of the workout they were giving him every day, how they were draining him of fluids constantly… It was going to be highly taxing, and they needed to build in periods of rest, even if it meant raising Max’s suspicions a little.
“Okay, I agree with you,” Mrs. Churchill said. “We need to not overdo it and not overwhelm him, so we’ll let him have the week off from the food truck. Shit, nothing in Mr. Brand’s mandate said he couldn’t take a sabbatical from work. It’s not like he’s going to fucking need the income from the truck once he comes into his inheritance.”
“Speaking of that, the reporter’s sniffing around again,” Jacinda said.
“De Silva? She’s handled.”
“Not her, the other one, Kendall.”
“He lost interest in the case and moved on, right?”
“Apparently not, because he’s trying to convince his editor that all of Brand’s money has to go somewhere and the fact that there hasn’t been a public reading of the will means something shady is going on.”
“I mean,” Mrs. Churchill said with a laugh. “He’s not wrong, but we can’t have him looking into these things. You got something to throw him off the scent again?”
“We can try and run the ‘conflicting wills’ bit on him, see if he’ll bite.”
“We already tried using the ‘missing will’ bit.”
“So it makes perfect sense to go from no wills to too many wills,” Mrs. Churchill said with a grin. “Whenever they expect one thing, we hit them with another. Has the doc had a chance to give Max the once over?”
“She says diagnosing a patient via television isn’t the easiest, but Max looks like he’s mostly still in a relatively good state,” Jacinda said. “It’s helpful that the girls are making sure he’s drinking a lot of juice and water, but we need to ensure he’s also getting sleep, full meals and having a day or two off here and there.”
“Basically, the doctor just reiterated everything you were already telling me,” Mrs. Churchill said. “Were you holding all that back in case I didn’t want to believe you?”
“Of course not, boss,” Jacinda said in a tone that made Mrs. Churchill not believe her one bit. “It’s just helpful and convenient timing. But it’s a good reminder. I know we have to sort of distance ourselves from Max’s humanity a bit for this to work, but we can’t entirely cut off everything that makes us human. Don’t think of him as just another mark in the game, boss, because we’re supposed to be doing this for his benefit, and he gets to know all the inner workings of the gag after it’s done. You don’t want him to be too pissed at you.”
“He’s not allowed to retaliate against us, so I’m not too worried about it. Besides, he’s going to have such a headspin from all the information when it gets dumped on him, he’s going to need that time set aside for him to decompress.”
“He does look so peaceful sleeping like that,” Lynne said, glancing at the screen. “Although I’m surprised that bed is holding. It doesn’t look like it’s designed for three people.”
“Hell, it doesn’t look like it’s designed for two people.”

“He’s gonna sleep the whole day away at this rate,” Liane said, tapping the monitor on the inside of the van as Danny glanced over, making sure Max hadn’t stirred yet.
“So what if he does?” Danny said with a little sigh. “He’s earned it. “You never told me who the old guy was,” Liane said, moving to sit down on his lap.
“Oh that,” Danny laughed. “I didn’t think you cared.”
“I didn’t before, but now that I’ve seen it all for myself, I wanna know.”
“Monty Brand.”
“Wait, the old guy who owned, like, everything?”
“Well, he owned a whole hell of a lot, but I think that’s just a byproduct of being worth close to a hundred and fifty billion dollars.”
“That’s not a real amount of money, Danny,” Liane giggled before looking at the expression on his face. “Wait, you’re serious?”
“Like a heart attack.”
“That’s insane, Danny!”
“Now you know how all this is getting funded,” Danny chuckled. “Between all the equipment, all the hotels and AirBnB’s, all the plane tickets, all the money that’s being offered to these women… it’s all gotta come from somewhere.”
“So, Max won’t be worth $150 billion when this is all over.”
“Oh no, he will,” Danny said with a laugh. “Apparently old Monty’d been planning for this for most of a decade. He set up a corporation almost ten years ago that was literally just banking resources in order to fund all of this. It’s worth close to two billion dollars on its own right now, even with us taking out tens of millions of dollars for all of this.”
“That’s where your salaries are coming from?”
“Well, it’s more of a fee rather than a salary, although we definitely get paid on a sliding scale and with performance bonuses,” Danny told her. “The better we perform in Monty’s master plan, the higher our team’s payout is.”
“Is it going to be retirement money?”
“Quite possibly, assuming we want to retire,” Danny chuckled, nuzzling his face into Liane’s neck. “As weird as this gig’s been, it’s actually been kind of fun. And I like Max as a person. He might need a head of security and that might be a gig I’d be willing to take.”
“You wouldn’t want to stay with Mrs. Churchill?”
“That’s another option too,” he admitted. “I could always just stay with the bosslady, assuming she’s not retiring.”
“Mrs. Churchill? Retire? I can’t imagine that ever happening, Danny.”
He laughed a little bit, running his hand along the back of her neck lazily. “Yeah, me neither. I don’t think she’s in it for the money. I don’t think she’s ever had to worry about money in day-to-day living. Never had to chase a paycheck, never had to sweat a rent check, never had to worry about where money to fill the tank of the car would come from. She’s from a legacy of money, and there’s something appealing about that.”
“But aren’t we going to be that kind of money after this gig’s done?”
“… I mean, I guess?”
“You said we were talking private island money, right? The kind of money that means you’d never have to work again?”
“Well, we’d never have to work again,” Danny corrected. “Since you’ve been helping out with managing Max, you get a share for the gag as well.”

“Well, it might be that. So you should open it.”
“If I open it, then it’s going to be real.”

“Now,” Liane said, moving back across the van over towards his lap, glancing at the screen, seeing Max hadn’t moved an inch. “I think you’d better get to work, don’t you?”

Kelly smiled a little bit, kissing his forehead. “I just needed to take a bit of a walk, make sure my muscles didn’t cramp up in the night.” She reached down and rubbed the wicked scar on her left calf, wincing slightly. “Sometimes it acts funny if I’m sleeping in a new bed.”
Max’s face immediately looked like he thought he’d screwed up. “I’m so sorry, Kelly, I didn’t know, otherwise I wouldn’t have asked—”
“Hey, Max, relax,” she said before moving in to give him a proper kiss. “If I was worried about it, I wouldn’t have stayed. I wanted to stay. I liked being here, in your arms, even if I am sharing you with Jenny.”
“I thought you didn’t mind Jenny.”
“Oh, I don’t. I like Jenny, but it might be nice to have you all to myself at some point…”
“You think we need to get up?”
“I think I want another hour or two sleep with you.”
“I think that’s a good idea too…”

I think you misread subtext, they didn't say he wouldn't have the capability to track the woman down, or retaliate against the group running the gig(drove me crazy every time gig was misspelled - what a gag!) What they said was that he couldn't, meaning it was written into the will that if he did his inheritance would be rescinded or similar.

This is such a great story concept, and you are writing it in a compelling and interesting way (like all your work!). It would be great to get more internal dialogue from Max on how crazy his life has become and become more and more suspicious of what is happening. I know that he has decided to stop thinking about it intentionally, but people can't help themselves and will bounce back and forth despite those kind of self decisions. It would add a level of realism to it and make Max even more an interesting character to read about - you know, he figures out what is happening to him and confronts Churchill (maybe through his watchers). Maybe bringing his clandestine friend back with an update would catalyze that. Anyway, I love this story, and it is #2 for me after QT2! Thank you!!
