Maya panted heavily, reaching up to wipe sweat off her forehead, her legs still shaking as Andy squeezed his arms around her while she giggled. “I know I’m supposed to be getting used to that, but even almost a year later, you still totally take my fucking breath away each and every time, Mr. Rook,” she said to him, turning to kiss him on the lips. “And I appreciate you coming down here to set to take care of my needs. I know it’s only an hour and change away, but the studio’s on my ass to get the film in the can as quickly as possible. They’re so desperate to have entertainment to sell people that they’re willing to just throw money and people at the problem, so we’ve got 1st and 2nd ADs working through the night, filming all the stuff I’m not filming myself. We’re like a city that never sleeps.”
Andy smiled, his fingertips stroking against the back of her neck gently. “Just as long as they’re not working you to death, that’s all that matters to me.”
She cleared her throat with a grin of indignance on her face. “Well, it shouldn’t be, Andy. This is your story they’re all working on, you know. If it comes out and it’s shit—”
“It won’t be; I trust you, Maya.”
“But if it is, then—”
“Then I’d better hope the ‘Neon Stonehenge’ movie kicks ass because otherwise my name, when it comes to adaptations, won’t mean shit. Yes, Maya, I got it,” he laughed. “You’ve made it abundantly clear to me. But what I saw from the Stonehenge dailies looked awesome, Chris Kane was nailing the part and both Sarah and Em killed their scenes, so that’ll be fine. And I watched you shooting for a bit before you called for Partner Break, and it’s looking amazing, just like I wrote about in my story, if not even better. I was pretty nervous when you first told me you wanted ‘Fatal Alliances,’ simply because that story’s always been pretty dark and bleak in my head, and I was worried somebody – not necessarily you, but the studio maybe – would try and soften the ending. But everyone’s been staying so much on point, not wanting to flinch from the sort of downbeat finale, so why would I be worried?”
“You were worried about the studio flinching on the ending,” she grumbled as she pulled the two of them out of the bed and into the shower inside of the trailer. It was barely big enough for the two of them, but they were going to make it work, neither of them wanting to go back out to the set being sticky. They had time. “But I was more worried about them flinching about the nudity. Both Ewan and Mary are up for it, but I know full frontal male nudity used to be the kiss of death. Thankfully, it seems like since women have taken over nearly all the positions of power at the movie studios, they’re lightening up about the depiction of sex on screen, including nudity, so I think they’re going to let me keep all of it in.”
“Well, you and I both know the biggest use of nudity in that story’s the foot chase in the snow in the buff, but if you wanted to, you could’ve easily shot that without showing anything.”
“It wouldn’t have been anywhere near as much fun, though, if I did,” Maya said with her rogue-like grin. She’d kept her hair a bright lime green, and Andy couldn’t deny, it made her incredibly easy to spot in a crowded room. “Besides, we’re shooting all that on soundstage anyway, so it won’t be as freezing cold as it would if we tried to do it in Berlin in the actual winter. Ewan’s insisting we chill the set for closeups, though, so his breath actually fogs the air like it should.”
“Attention to detail,” Andy nodded, as Maya turned off the shower water. “It’s important.”
“I’ll make sure it all looks awesome,” she said, while they stepped out and grabbed towels. “Especially since if I knock this out of the park, I’ll be able to keep making stuff I want to make.”
“Like what?”
“Like ‘The Demon Dies At Midnight,’” she said with a wide grin, raising her hand. “Yes, yes, I know I’ll have to talk with the Druid Gunslinger production team, even though it doesn’t really feature the Gunslinger in it that much. I know it’s set in the same universe, but I love the idea of that freelance demon hunter, and getting some of your crossover works seeded will help establish you as a writer beyond just ‘that Gunslinger guy.’ I think the producers will let me have it once they see this. Assuming they don’t flub up distribution or push us to release ahead of when we’re ready.”
“Make them take the time in post to get it right,” Andy stressed as he started to pull his clothes back on. “But I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know.”
Maya tugged her t-shirt on, pulling the last of her clothes into place. “I took it as helping, not mansplaining, Andy. You’re fine. And yeah, I’ll hold firm on them not rushing us through post, especially since a bunch of the special effects houses are running at like a third of the staff they were two years ago.”
“They lost that many people?”
“ILM did better than most, but nearly all of Weta got wiped out with the New Zealand incident,” Maya said, pulling on her socks and boots before lacing them up. “Most of Hollywood took the lockdown very seriously, but many of the FX houses aren’t in Hollywood these days. That’s part of the reason I was able to get ‘Fatal Alliances’ greenlit so easily – most of the effects we’re doing are practical and can be done on-set in-camera. There’s plenty of stunt work, but it seems like a lot of the stunt teams were just as paranoid about viruses as the Silicon Valley nerds were, so now that they’re vaxxed up, they’re eager to get back to work. They couldn’t wait to get back on a set, and they’re giving me some of the best fight choreography I’ve ever seen, and I started as a fight choreographer, so let me tell you, Andy, these men and women are bringing their triple-A game to your story. If this shit doesn’t draw in audiences, either the studio fucked us, or I royally fucked up.”
Andy grabbed his leather satchel with his laptop in it and slung it back over his shoulder, wrapping his arms around the small, feisty woman, giving her a long hug. “If something goes wrong, and it won’t!, but if it does, it’s not on you. It can be the studio’s fault, or it can be my fault, but it’s not yours, okay?”
“You have got to stop martyring yourself on the drop of a dime, Mister Rook,” Maya said as she opened the door to the trailer. Melody was waiting outside, reading a book. “I’m a big girl. I can own up to my own shit if I fail. But I won’t.”
“But you won’t,” Andy agreed as they walked from the trailers back over to the sound stage. A security guard at the door to the building checked his and Melody’s passes but recognized Maya enough that she didn’t bother checking hers. Once they got back onto the stage, Andy was unsurprised to find Moira deep in conversation with Ewan and Mary, her and Ewan regaling Mary with stories about growing up in Scotland, although Moira pointed out she’d come from a lot more remote place, and as such, wasn’t privy to all the fancy and fashionable things Ewan had grown up with, only for Ewan to counter that she’s grown up decades after he had, so she’d had the luxury of things like the Internet to help her through it.
“I cannae deny tha’ ‘Long Way Round’ certainly helped awaken a love of travel in me,” Moira told Ewan. “You an’ Charley, jus’ out there on the lam, crossin’ the world on yer bikes, even when it seemed rough as hell.”
“That’s an understatement,” Ewan laughed, shaking his head. “Around the time we reached Far East Russia, my arse and willy were so badly bitten with mosquito bites that I was afraid everything was just going to fall off. But there’s nothing quite like seeing the world at ground level from astride your motorbike.”
“I was so glad when Apple TV+ started showing ‘Long Way Up’ last September,” Andy said. “I’d had the luxury of moving around a bunch since I’d gotten paired up very early in the process, but I know my oldest friend Xander said just being able to watch you travel through South and Central America was like being able to get out of his own house for an hour at a time.”
“I’m so glad Charley listened to me and stayed safe. He and Olivia holed up, and they were fairly early inductees to the Gemivax program over there,” Ewan said. “We’ve actually been talking about the idea of doing one more, maybe calling it ‘Long Way Back,’ and just surveying the world post Duo-Halo, travelling from California back to Scotland, but it’s a lot more messy now, what with having to bring an entire Team with us each, as well as a Team for each crew member we’d bring with us. That’s far trickier than anything we’ve ever undertaken. Still, I know enough to never say never, and knowing Charley, he’ll probably push for us to do it eventually. Of course, soon enough, we’ll have a little one again to worry about.”
“Congratulations!” Maya said. “I remember you and Mary talking about it when we were discussing your casting. How far along are you?”
“Just a few months,” Mary said, “so we’re not really telling anyone about it yet. We were going to try and have a child earlier, and I would’ve been giving birth right about now, actually, but when the death tolls started rising so fast, we put it on hold for a while.”
“I got incredibly lucky,” Ewan said, his face taking on a bit of sadness. “All of my children with my first wife were just barely outside of the Kill Zone – Clara, Esther and Jamyan all just past the top end, and Anouk just below the bottom. I can’t even bear to think about what would’ve happened if I’d lost any of them.”
“How’s your ex doing?” Maya asked.
“She’s paired up with a foreman set designer down in Los Angeles, so the kids aren’t split far from us,” Ewan said. “And my three eldest girls are all partnered up as well. I was a little worried about Clara – she actually caught DuoHalo and recovered from it before she got partnered – and knowing that I couldn’t get anywhere near my little girl while she was possibly dying…” The Scotsman shook his head, reaching up to brush a tear from his eyes. “That was perhaps the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through. You just feel so…”
“Helpless,” Andy said, placing his hand on Ewan’s shoulder. “I get it. I lost my older brother, and didn’t even have time to know he was sick. One day I was talking to him on the phone, the next I was being informed of his death. We’ve all got a bit of survivor’s guilt going through us. And feeling the pain’s normal. It’s to be expected. We just can’t let it stop us from staying alive, you know?”
Ewan sniffed in a bit of air, then forced himself to give a slightly needed laugh. “Completely off-topic, how was your mid-day shag, Madam Director? Head cleared and ready to get back to work, I hope? I know ours went quite well. We only got back here a few minutes ago ourselves.”
“Unlike you gossipy actors,” Maya said with a smirk, “a director keeps her business to herself. But, needless to say, I’m topped off and ready to get back to work. How about you two?”
“Of course, of course,” Mary said. “Just need to get our makeup touched up quick and we should be ready to film.”
“Go do that,” Maya replied, “and I’ll see to getting the crew rounded back up. I’ll see you three later, yeah?” Before Andy could answer, Maya was already heading off towards the members of her crew that were touching up part of the set while they waited for shooting to resume.
Despite the fact that they were only about a 90-minute drive from their house in New Eden, Maya was crashing in a nearby hotel in Los Gatos while she was working on filming. She felt like losing three hours a day in transportation was a massive waste of her time, and Andy had found it hard to disagree with her. So once a week, he would come down and top her off, although normally they would spend more time hanging out, whether she wanted him making script adjustments for her or just hanging around the set to see how he felt about the vibe of certain parts. This week, however, Maya had made it clear she would need him to just drop in, pop off and fly away.
“I know she’s busy, but she could’ve given you a goodbye kiss or something,” Melody grumbled, shaking her head disapprovingly, although Andy knew she was mostly just grousing to have something to complain about.
He, Melody and Moira headed out to the car, and Andy hopped into the backseat while Moira hopped into the front with Melody, as she knew Andy had a phone call to make. He spent most of his next thirty minutes explaining how he was going to need another month or two to finish “The Centaur’s Cement Shoes,” the next in the Druid Gunslinger books. He was behind schedule, and no amount of nagging from his agent was going to make the book happen faster. That said, the release of the movie version of “Neon Stonehenge” had been set for July 1st, 2022, in order to give the special effects teams enough time for post-production, and for the studios to remember how to market a movie again.
Movie theaters had reopened in the spring, but so far, they’d mostly been filled with films that had been sitting on the shelf for a few years, or big blockbusters that had been delayed so getting something new and original was a top priority for all the movie studios. There had been a few back-and-forth discussions on the first cut of the movie, and there had been a week’s worth of reshoots, simply because they’d had to adjust a few of the flashback scenes, opting not to use digitally aged children and instead just set it when the Gunslinger and his sister were a little bit younger. Along with that, the director had also decided Colin Farrell wasn’t a good fit for the part, especially since George Clooney had volunteered, and the reshoots had included Clooney as the Gunslinger’s father.
Andy had reached out to Farrell personally and assured him they would find another place for him within the Gunslinger universe soon enough, suggesting they might consider him for the recurring role of The Armorer, who first appeared in the second book, “Have Totem Will Travel,” which seemed to put the Irish actor more at ease, because it turned out the actor had read the entire series once he’d been offered the part of the elder Gunslinger and had been looking forward to being a part of it. When Andy had suggested The Armorer to him, Farrell had laughed and replied, “That’ll do, scribe. That’ll do.”
Trish, his agent, hadn’t been quite as understanding as Farrell had, at least not at first. She’d been promised a new book by June, and Andy informed her he was going to need another month, maybe two, because the last few chapters were a mess, and if she didn’t want another ‘Trouble With Werebears’ on her hand, she’d give him the extra two months to stick the landing properly. She agreed as long as he agreed to do the other project she’d recommended, a ‘director’s cut’ of ‘Trouble With Werebears,’ where he went back and redid the parts he’d not been happy with. He’d initially been opposed to the idea, but the more she kept pointing out how if he wanted to fix the book, he could change as little or as much as he thought it needed, the more it started to appeal to him. In the end, he agreed to doing ‘Werebears Revisited’ as his next project after he finished ‘Cement Shoes’ and when he was hanging up, he suspected that Trish had gotten exactly what she wanted out of the conversation, and that the delay hadn’t been unexpected, but instead a piece of leverage she could use to fix a lingering problem that had always been bothering them both.
When he looked up from his phone, he narrowed his eyes a little bit. “We’re not heading east back to New Eden,” he said to the two women in the front seat of the car.
“Awww… isn’t he cute? He’s just now realizing he’s not going home tonight,” Melody said with a laugh. “Don’t worry, boss. You’re not being kidnapped or anything. Not without people knowing about it, anyway. You’ll be staying at the SF penthouse tonight and tomorrow, and we’ll head back to New Eden tomorrow evening. All tomorrow, you’re basically on an enforced writer’s retreat, where we’re gonna turn off the WiFi, turn off your cellphone, put vinyl music on and get you to write and not do anything else.”
“That’s tomorrow,” Andy replied. “What about this afternoon and evening?”
“You’ve got … other plans.”
It made him feel a little bit better that at least he knew where he was going, as he looked out the window to see them heading into San Francisco proper. The penthouse that Nathaniel Watkins had given him only tended to be occupied for about a week out of every month, but it had been a godsend for Emily and Sarah when they’d been doing on-location shooting for ‘Neon Stonehenge,’ as they’d just stayed there instead of making the commute back to New Eden. It was the same issue Maya was experiencing, just in slightly different directions.
They pulled into the parking garage, drove to one of their four designated parking spaces, plugged the car into the charger, and then headed to the elevator to ride up, waving their electronic keycard to unlock it so it would go to the penthouse. “You’re really not going to tell me what’s going on?” Andy asked Melody while Moira continued to look smug.
“The wives made a decision on your behalf, and once the proposal is made, if you really want to argue about it, you can.” Melody waited a moment before she added, “I wouldn’t, though. Total waste of time and effort.”
The elevator dinged at the penthouse’s lower floor and opened up, letting Andy set foot in the place that had become his in-city office workspace. More often than not, he took meetings over at the penthouse place with the Hollywood crowd, or with the Associated Press crowd, depending on which hat he was wearing on any given day, author or Quaranteam Civilian Oversight Committee Member. But the place seemed relatively quiet today, until Andy heard the sounds of Art Pepper playing over the apartment’s stereo.
“Okay, boss, here’s where I leave you,” Melody said. “I’ll be in the bedroom down the hall if you need me, and don’t you dare think about leaving, because if that elevator dings and I don’t know to expect it, I’m likely to hit you with a stun gun.”
“You’re kidding, obviously,” Andy said to her with a strange smile on his face.
“Am I?” Melody laughed. “I suppose you could fuck around and find out, but probably best not to, hm? Have fun!”
It was at that point that Andy noticed Moira had disappeared, scurrying off while he’d been talking to his bodyguard. He shook his head a little and wondered idly what he’d gotten himself into. “Come upstairs, ya numpty!” Moira giggled at him from the floor above, and Andy couldn’t help but chuckle. It was a long way from his birthday, from any of his wives’ birthdays, Valentine’s Day had been months earlier, and June 25th was the anniversary of Lauren arriving in the house, but he had dinner planned with her and Taylor tomorrow night, so he wasn’t sure what the hell was going on tonight. Best to just face it, he decided, as he headed up the stairs and down the hall to the master bedroom, where it sounded like the music was the loudest.
Once he got to the room, he still didn’t know what was going on, but at least he knew who was behind it. Moira had changed attire, and was now dressed in a leather skirt, long thigh high black stockings, knee-high leather boots, a half-buttoned white button-up shirt and a leather jacket, her dark wine-red hair done up into a ponytail, quite the change from the casual jeans and t-shirt she’d been in only minutes ago. Standing next to her, however, was the person Andy suspected was the real culprit for all of this, Emily. She was dressed similarly to Moira, except she’d forgone with the white t-shirt and the leather jacket was half zipped up, so he could see the lacey black bra peeking out from beneath it. Her light brown hair hung loose down to her shoulders, and she had a large circular golden pendant hanging just below her collarbone. Moira had her hands folded together behind her back, and Em had her arms crossed over her chest.
“About time you got here,” Emily said to him. “I told Maya to stall you a little bit, but to make sure she didn’t leave you too drained.”
Andy chuckled, sliding his laptop bag off his shoulder, setting it down on top of the chair in the corner as he kicked off his slip-on shoes. “What’s all this about, Em?”
“Can I tell him?” Moira asked.
“If you like,” Emily replied with a mischievous smile, “but I’ll expect you to be blunt about it, since it hasn’t seemed to sink into his thick little skull yet.”

“Wait,” Andy said, looking from Moira to Emily back to Moira again. “You’re serious?”

Yeah, I didn't think it through in the moment I read it in the story, but it was my gut reaction. Then I got to thinking about dead minor characters being a legit noir thing, and totally overlooked "Centaur" until you responded.
