I think you might be able right about the common ion effect. Also, I didn't even think of doing a redo titration. Maybe I'll do that!
I don't have any real theories about the solubility issue: the behaviour of the various discrete and polymeric vanadate species looks pretty complex. For the crystallization, I would guess that if you left it to crystallize for longer you would have got the same amount as when adding the ammonium chloride. The ammonium chloride would have accelerated the crystallization through the common ion effect. Have you thought about doing a redox titration of the product to determine the purity?
