To me, it looks like a romantic relationship! I think Violet really fell in love with Gilbert but just doesnt know it’s love yet. On the other hand Gilbert probably was not in love at first but due to spending a long time together developed feelings for her. I’m not sure what their age gap is tho, i think Gilbert is also young, he just looks old haha
