You will like HM’s comment re my comment in POD 104 re potential for distillate rapid decomposition (aka explosion) with breaking the vacuum or even just reaching a certain point in the distillation with certain compounds. Re mineral oil and LAH, realistically it's not something I can imagine myself doing under most circumstances, but I like the idea. Depending on the compound, the workup might not be altered but in some instances it's not ideal. I've had to wash the mineral oil off of NaH before using it because the product of the rxn didn't have any readily-ionizable atoms and so the mineral oil would have become an impurity. I recently used LAH pellets for the first time after many years of only using the powder, that seems like a decent compromise that reduces surface area and reactivity during handling without introducing hydrocarbons that need to be removed.

I was referring to the chemiluminescent compound diphenyl oxalate aka "Cyalume" not the opioid diphenoxylate, similar names but very different chemicals!

TY for sharing this, HM. Diphenoxylate is mentioned re oxalyl chloride. Please share if you have that info on synth. Diphenoxylate ranks with pethidine for it's abatement of IBS symptomatology being equipotent while exhibiting far less potential for 'misuse' at higher doses - less euphoric 'buzz'. Sadly diphenoxylate 2.5 mg tablet is 'poisoned' with atropine (AKA Lomotil) and as many know takes around 8 to 16 tablets for the effective oral dose at which the atropine 'poisoning' kicks in. Parenteral dosing of around 25 mg of the above opiates is phenomenal for stemming the hyperactive bowel and is not much perceptible nor does it induce a tolerance for it's GI effects. Sadly again, diphenoxylate is completely unavailable to compounding pharmacies as the unadulterated opiate and would be Schedule II. Mechlorethamine plus benzyl cyanide is the basic path to pethidine. Diphenoxylate would seem a bit more complex as it is chemically peth with a (big) twist on the piperidine. Looking forward to the video and any other interviews with this gentleman of clandestine chemistry history. HM, can you share any insight on mixing LiAlH4 with mineral oil - genius idea perhaps. I bet it might not complicate the w/u too much. Can you comment on this aspect? Many thanks again for sharing Steve - another winner of a podcast.
