One thing to note about the Arthur Mondella case with the Maraschino Cherry factory is that he owned a firearm. In his case it was a legal firearm, but regardless if it was legal firearm the involvement of a firearm in a drug case increases charges. Specifically, it involves firearm charges that at the very least increases scrutiny by the justice system which usually results in higher prison time (such as minimum sentencing requirements and an easier argument for the prosecution that the defendant is dangerous). This may have been a motivator for suicide in this case, as tragic as it is, firearms and drugs don't mix well. P.S. I'm not a lawyer.

Thank you for doing this episode! As cannabis gets legalized in more states over time we tend to forget that thousands of people are still in prison for minor possession charges. I’m in the cannabis industry in Massachusetts and even though there’s reciprocity laws for minorities, the industry still favors the white and wealthy. My department has been short staffed for months and we’re actively trying to hire BIPOC, something somewhere in the background check/state licensing process keeps going wrong for multiple candidates. Massachusetts talks a lot about reciprocity and foundations like Last Prisoner Project, but isn’t necessarily embracing it. I’m curious and hopeful about the industry in NY.

What I was trying to get at in that last comment is when the opiate pill cracked down happened in America I fully expected a organized criminal group to step in and provide a new access to semi synthetic opiate medications either through bootlegging existing mechanisms for distribution such as pills and or creating a brick version of hydrocodone oxycodone oxymorphone hydromorphone etc. I was shocked when the full switch to exotic synthetic opioids occurred and still to this day cannot really wrap my head around the decision to not go down a more lucrative path lucrative in a lot of different facets not just money
