Doma the winner of the first cup was not the person to really isolate tidal wave. He stole the credit from one of his patrons that went by Miggs. I was on the discord when it all went down. Migs grew the sample that won the cup all the way down to the isolation, agar work, and plate transfers.. In 2022 I meet Doma in person when he was touring with the delta 8 CBD expo and asked him if he isolated TW2z He said he was selling B+ strain swabs and tw2 was isolated from his spores since he was the seller of the swab it was his “genetics” he did not mention migs name but did not say anything about growing it or even isolating it. I know Doma is friends with Alan, but I’m not sure the world really knows Doma. To me this was him omitting he was not giving credit to the person who really did the work. That would make for a great episode if you ever want to try and interview the real creator of tidal wave 2 let me know and I will see if I can arrange.

I have had allergic reactions to milk caps in my area. When out taking pics one time I had some of the latex on my hand and rubbed my face and it was burning for sometime after that. also i am mushlovegmaing on iNaturalist. Just found out about it last month. gotta start using it.

Alan, have you heard anything definitive about the toxicity of Podostroma cornu-damae (poison fire coral)? I have heard rumors that some people have been poisoned just by contact with the skin, but I don't know of any actual documented cases of this. Also, it seems to be so toxic that it might not even be safe to taste it. I almost wonder if the poisonings through skin contact were actually caused by contamination of food from contact with skin that was exposed to it. Anyhow, it would be interesting to hear your take on it.

Regarding the discussion at about 39 minutes into the recording about naming the new mushroom species "enigma", it comes directly from Latin, which comes from Greek ainigma (ainissesthai, to speak allusively), so the word could be used in a taxonomic name as-is.

The anecdote with the flourescent sap of Chelidonium majus and sanguinarine caught me very off guard, because I had an almost identical experience when inspecting the equally-orange sap of a flower known as Algemone albiflora (Texas Prickly Poppy). I also noticed it contained sanguinarine and remarked the interesting scaffold. Very cool to hear someone had that same experience.

Wood lovers paralysis really is fascinating. I’ve never seen anyone experience it nor have I experienced it. Someone above mentioned Parkinsons Disease but don’t think it’s related. Patients with PD have very specific and characteristic movement disorders, mostly related to gait and facial and other movements. There is also chemically mediated nicotinic cholinergic paralysis from certain quaternary alkaloids but this might result in a fatal outcome, which apparently does not happen so I doubt this is any part of the mechanism. I bet it is related to the sleep paralysis, a condition that can result from REM sleep interruption in a non-drugged state. Perhaps there is a Wood lovers alkaloid that has the ability to mediate this normal, REM mediated disconnect in the brain’s motor pathway. Anyone have any experience or thoughts on this?

In plant genetics how phenotypic variations are correlated to specific locations in a genome is doing population genetic studies assisted by DNA markers. A great way to do it to do a Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) that scan for single nucleotide polymorphisms that can be correlated to specific phenotypes. It would work well for identifying what area of the genome a trait like albinism or penis envy morphology comes from. It would be a large project as you would need many unique genotypes to compare and a lot of full genome sequences. Hopefully someone can do something like that in the future to look closer into P. cubensis genetics.

I picked a few lbs or so of Amanita Muscaria var. Formosa or Guessowii near Island Park in Idaho a few years ago Hamilton. I studied up very well with the different variations like the Angel of Death. We were very careful not to pick any white ones that had not turned color into the yellowish/orange color. The thing I noticed the most on the trail we found them on was that a bunch of cows had eaten a ton of the Amanita mushrooms and the best part was that the cows got explosive diarrhea and there was tons of wet shit exploded around and on the trail. So at least the cows knew they were good lmfao. I think its funny that a lot of mammals like to consume psychoactive substances. Do you think they just wanted a meal or do you think they knew that they could get "high"? I love taking Amanita freshly picked I have eaten about a 6 inch cap de-gilled. I made sure to use a knife to pick them so we did not disturb the mycelium however the mushrooms have not come back since unfortunately...

I have smelled very similar scents while walking though the woods in the lowlands of NC where where I have never seen ovoids. I suspect there are flowering plants that produce a very similar smell.

The effects of wood lovers paralysis sound somewhat similar to the symptoms of parkinson where patients are unable to connect the idea of moving their body with psychically doing it. Could there be a link? Perhaps something with the dopaminergic cells in the substantia nigra?
