POD 118: Day 3 dispatch from DEA HQ
🕑 Added 2024-11-15 08:08:22 +0000 UTCToday the expert witnesses continued their exploration of the scientific utility and therapeutic potential of DOI while the DEA's cross examination took on an unsettlingly threatening tone.
EDIT: I have made the first three days free to the public, please share them to raise awareness. I will release the day 4 dispatch today.

For anyone who hasn’t seen it, look up NKTR 181’s structure. It’s pretty bizarre
Kevin Bauer
OMG on the DEA agents killed in an extremely unlikely auto accident. No, seriously sad for them and families, But WTF about 7 guys killed but the paperwork was safe? This is not the agency they think they are.
Meek
Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan is pretty good for Gonzo type stuff if youre interested!
Spencer Morris
Love your trademark dry sense of humor in all this, Hamilton. Thanks for doing all this fantastic reporting.

This is the closest thing to Gonzo journalism our generation will ever see. Next time, I highly advise you to bring your attorney to remind these "public servants" that it's your God-given right to bring that luggage wherever you damn well please, and those legally acquired "wakefullness promoting agents" could very well keep them all employed for another week while the court tries to figure out what level of public health threat it's dealing with.

Whoops I'm currently unemployed and realized I forgot the weekend was a thing... I was getting worried.
Tabor Whitehead
Oh it’s a rabbit hole.
Tabor Whitehead
Thank you for what you do Hamilton and stay safe
Ericaceous
Fuck I think I've just psychologically predetermined my next salvia trip
Ericaceous
Thank god Hamilton is still liking comments. I was wondering how many days we were planning to wait without another dispatch until we had to assemble a squad to bust his ass out of DEA headquarters, armed to the teeth with easels and personal vacations, well-known arch nemeses of DEA operatives.
Ericaceous
I also was like wtf is a DEA judge? Seems like someone pretty destined to be biased.
Cheminterested
I once took DMT and because a self-conscious easel

These have been extremely inciteful. I really wish Vice hadn’t fucked you (and itself) over and this was being produced as a mini YouTube documentary as well. Even if it was just your recounts of what’s going on in the courtroom and interviews with people involved, I feel like a short form video would garner a lot more public attention on how ridiculous this all is.
Dylan
I came for drug policy reform, but I stayed for the easel drama.
Eban (Sully)
Absolutely loving this atm
Phil Oad
Can anyone explain to me why this is happening in the DEA headquarters? What is a DEA judge?
Wonky Kong
This has been excellent and thoroughly gripping! I’ve been a patron since the beginning, and it's easily up there with the best of the best. Thank you, H—your hard work is definitely not in vain. I’m still haw hawing over the parent-teacher rave! Ha

Yup, last night was rough as I wondered what could possibly have happened in there…

My sleeping pattern has coincidentally changed to incorporate the release time of these DEA hearing updates into my waking hours. I like listening while it’s hot off the press.

Awaiting anxiously for day 4

Enjoying these. Hoping the last glimmer of rationality and hope shines through in that court room 🌈

Believe it or not, this is by far not the most Kafkaesque hearing of this type - back in the 70s when methaqualone was still prescribed and cocaine was king, and at one point cannabis legalization was seriously considered, there were some absolutely wild hearings at NIDA as well as the DEA....it was a strange time...
Meek
These are absolutely fantastic, I think a play or novel or something could so easily be written out of your work here. It’s so twisted and strange. I was contemplating the idea that we should respond to this by taking DOI almost out of spite, but that feels decadent too; one wouldn’t their own use of it to be used as evidence by the DEA and therefore potentially harming scientific research. But its not controlled, so why does it feel like fear, or ‘Terror’ is a tactic being used successfully.. Following what someone else said, the idea that the DEA is using reddit etc as evidence is mental, maybe those people posting about DOI fuelled parties live somewhere where it is legal to take! So are they really interested in the Law, or is it some ideological mission? So much love Hamilton 🙏

About to overnight ship the finest and most ergonomic clipboard in all of the land to our heroic narrator.
Douglas Skene
These recaps are awesomely insightful. Kinda sickening to hear some of the embarrassing tactics though...
saeric
This was so wonderful. I was HOWLING listening to Day 2, but this is shaping up too. I’m really enjoying. Thank you.

Could you bring a clipboard? I personally am genuinely grateful for your coverage of this debacle, and all of the incredible work you have done in educating people on what these substances do and don't do. You're awesome Hamilton!
Neighbors Dog
Your prescience in one of your previous Dec Q&As reigns true in disturbing fashion. “It’s not just DOI, it’s not just DOC, it is about the fact that the DEA feels they can get away with this. That they feel that they have the right to prohibit drugs ‘willy-nilly’ without even the faintest pretense of protecting the public.” Sleep well Hamilton.

Really appreciate this. Helps put things into perspective

This is the only patreon I subscribe too and that I will never unsubscribe too. It’s entertaining but beyond maddening , I can’t believe this is the reality we live in.

I've also been finding these dispatches fascinating and valuable, thank you Hamilton for your tireless work (but please do catch up on sleep)! I think the picture that's emerging is scary and depressing but not all that shocking: the DEA has always, and always will operate from the starting assumption that Drugs Are Bad. It's a sorry state of affairs, but it's perhaps somewhat reassuring that they let the mask slip so easily and so often during these hearings. Drugs are Guilty Until Proven Innocent, which in practice means drug USERS are guilty until proven innocent. They see it not only as their right but as their sacred duty to make all drugs controlled; the idea of an "uncontrolled substance" is anathema to the institution. Only the constraints of time, resources and history (they would be coming after alcohol too if it weren't so culturally entrenched) keep them from scheduling every substance under the sun. And, perhaps in the end sanity will prevail, but as you're finding, it's going to take a lot of work for that to happen.

The ending is very abrupt - intentional?

This one was really crazy. The tactics used are crazy to hear about in real time

This has been such an eye opener, only Patreon I subscribe to and this is why! Thanks for doing this Hamilton

Be kind to yourself Hamilton. Sleep is very important. Thank you for all that you do.

Personally, it's delightful to see the new posts, but listening to them causes instant frustration.

Thanks for being there ... this is what the $5 subscription is all about ... thanks for showing up for us. The end was fitting ... the government doesn't care about the people or the DEA agents, they want us to fight and our lives are disposable. More divide and conquer ... more war on thought & freedom. A war on medicine is a crime against humanity

Also surely if psychedelics are generally unpleasant why are they also saying they are horribly addictive?? This whole thing is very very odd….

Waking up to this each morning this week has been such a delight
Josh
This series of dispatches has genuinely been some of my favourite content you've posted, such a raw take on what's happening when these decisions are made, keep it up man, smashing it
Phil Oad
Haven't listened to this yet but I can't wait to hear yet another mention of our narrator being recently on a celebrity's megayaught.
Arthur Tinel
Thank you so much for doing this, beyond fascinating
Adam
Im happy that the judge seem to like you, also happy that a researcher is speaking up
Thor Correia
Thank you for your commitment to keeping us posted. 30 pages of handwritten notes would absolutely destroy my hand and wrist.
