Excellent question! Zygrul's eventual betrayal was teased waaay back in the epilogue from book 1, but his plans are only just now being set into motion. We'll get some more details soon!

So why does Zygrul want the other liches murdered? He specifically brought her here, monologued about details to include hints where the phylacteries were and that he was ignoring the council, and then freed Asher to attack his ally.

Agreed however Asher thinks he is a realm specialist unlike the other that clearly shows as a control specialist thereby removing the one who has shown a direct capability to control him makes the most sense
