Lionheart Copperhead

When I think of an earth buff, I think of harden or something, so maybe soften or fragile as the debuff name. Friable (can be used to describe something that can be easily crumbled or pulverized.) might be a good one, and the infliction could be petrify which is the obvious choice

New word I've just learned. Ululate.

Aertheron

For example a slime ;)

CataFlan

Even elementals their cores are weak spots. Spirits don't have "innards", they are mana beings...

Oh I know, it’s all perfectly in character. It’s just the kind of situation where people ask you why you don’t do X, you blow them and don’t do it, and then you look back on it later and ask yourself why you didn’t do it. It’s a massive waste, but it’s exactly how people work.

Thanks!

Lunadea

I just can't stop making that mistake... It's like a running joke at this point :(

Lunadea

That's really close actually! Pretty awesome.

Because people don't change. Much like myself, Syl will never care without being forced to.

Thomas V.

It’s mostly the idea of targeting weak spots in general, looking for the softer, more easily accessible tissues, stuff like that. She doesn’t really think tactically until she’s absolutely forced to, instead of being a bit proactive about that. It’s not bad writing at all, she’s always been depicted as a bit lazy in anything that doesn’t immediately interest her (and doesn’t try to change that outlook despite her own regrets sometimes), but it is a thoroughly frustrating part of her personality. And as for the parts themselves, it’s not at all about the value - it’s about the connections something like the Inferno Sac has gotten her, or the equipment made for her out of the materials she’s harvested. Not to mention the importance of high-level materials in enchanting, and the amount of practice she’d be able to gain from that, or the value some of those parts would have if and when she decides to take up alchemy. Really, the monetary value is not the issue here. It’s the complete lack of foresight in potential uses that bugs me so much, or the potential personal and social value of it. Whether it’s bringing a hide like that back in pristine condition (which would be a Big Thing in dwarves society, I’d imagine), or the items she could’ve had made out of it, or the things she herself could do with it - all of which addresses your point about durability as well, Natalie (if I understood it correctly, at least). But no, she never takes that into account, and anything that happens in that vein is always by accident, because she consistently refuses to think things through despite the plethora of experience she has in this by now. Again, this is totally in line with her character, and with how she’s behaved for the rest of the series. It doesn’t make it any less frustrating, but that’s what good writing does I think lol

Wensber

I think Syl doesn't want any chance someone senses it and links her identities. Even if its not visible, there are lots of sight traits out there.

Natalie

While I understand your frustration, I will have to say that sometimes the parts are valuable explicitly because they are the enemies primary defense, and as such have a lot of resources dedicated to making them so tough that the only way through is utter destruction of that defence. As for the thought line of "target the mouth" etc, most of the enemies she's fought have been relatively small. Maybe 3x human size at most. Now measure your mouth, increase its size by 3, and try throwing a stone at it from across the room, while both it and you are moving.... there's a reason she's only been able to do this a few times basically while grappling an enemy. This is the first time "target the mouth" has been a truly viable option since its mouth is probably bigger than more than half of her previous oponents entirely.

matt

Because she doesn't care about value. It IS an annoyance.

I am confused, could syl not keep the Adventurers tag inside their body? Does it have to be visible to work, cause that would be a weird limitation.

meu 32

To be fair not always, with elementals and other homogeneous creatures it wouldn't be, or at the least not as much of one.

a quick peak -> a quick peek "peak" is a word that exists, like in mountain peak or peak performance, but it has nothing to do with looking

TYFTC! Thought you might to review the following line due to the repetition in Entirely/entire: Entirely down its entire length were what seemed like carved-out channels into its hide that pulsed like a living furnace with a bright orange glow. Could easily delete either one of them and the sentence would be clear.

CataFlan

TFTC! The innards is always a weak spot. Even dragons can't protect inside itself. Let's hope for useful traits!

I know magma worms are a fantasy stable, but the entire worm fight had me thinking of the leviathans from Factorio: https://youtu.be/gPVpBgc5xVk?si=fkQWDKhluznlyURK

> 'Or... Is the inside of their mouth a giant weak point? Maybe their stomach can't handle the slime?' She realises this only *after* ruining at least part of its incredibly valuable outer layer… Good going Syl, very smart of you 🙄 Edit: actually no, this really bugs me. Syl has gotten *so much* mileage out of her Dissection skill, and it’s given her *so many* advantages already, that she long ago should’ve gotten to the point where, if Dissection is *that* adamant about a part being valuable, her *absolute first instinct* should be to devise a plan to defeat her enemy with as little damage to the valuable part as possible. The *moment* she realised the importance of its outer layer, she should’ve tried to kill it from the inside out. But *we never see her do that*. *Ever*. She treats Dissection as a minor annoyance at best, kills her enemies in whatever way is the most fun for her, and just grabs whatever is left after that. As far as I can recall, we have *never* seen her seriously incorporate Dissection into her battle plan - it’s more of an afterthought than anything, on the rare occasions it gets mentioned before the battle at all. It *bugs* me.

Thanks for the chapter!

The worm would certainly be the bigger creature Syl wanted, although I'm not so sure of its usefulness above ground. Since the worm is tier 5 monster, I'm hoping it has some special abilities that we'll get to see next chapter. I'm still expecting Syl to be the easy winner, though.
