"Yet, undoubtedly, it had been the most uneventful. " probably mean eventful

Alexander C Hyde

“It’s not,” I refuted sharply. I inhaled, then continued more calmly, “But I will not deny that I am embroiled in (the) Game—albeit unwillingly. The brotherhood may be tainted by association.”

Yes, but is that the "fault" of the new Powers? Or just unfortunate? Or more insidious... would it have been possible to stop that from happening?

obiwann

Actionable proof??!! Go to the nether regions!! lol all people need to do is talk and they put stories together and realize many sectors have fallen.

obiwann

I think this is spot on. When in their fortress kartara said she had ancient knowledge on the trees and then next para she had a little nervous tick. I think u exactly right

David Brewer

Oh they likely do have a link of some kind... but that doesn't mean they'll be willing to jump in bed with someone trying to restore the Primes... they would likely hide their interests similar to both Kesh and the ancient gnome. The Brotherhood has no doubt seen how the Powers deal with those that sympathize with the Primes. Just because Michael wants to make that kind of change doesn't mean he'll succeed... oh and until the chapter drops we won't know if he's actually going to reveal his plans or merely hint at them. Edit: It is possible they do have the sort of information you're suggesting, I mean they built a "faction" large enough to be very desirable to the Powers despite not having a Power or even a true faction... and this despite the obvious hint they've "rebuilt" the Brotherhood after previous stygian encounters. They needed something to convince players to join.

David Brewer

It's definitely possible they could shift the paradigm, but let's be fair. I do think the Brotherhood should come to an arrangement with Michael. It serves everyone except the Void's and the Power's interests. I'm just pointing out why that the Brotherhood does have legitimate fears. Is it a guarantee they'd be destroyed? No. But it is definitely possible. The Powers covet the players of the Brotherhood but don't value it. So "educating" them by murder isn't off the table. And telling the majority of players the true history is by no means a silver bullet. It could help, but does anyone have actionable "proof" of what's happening? Not really. Michael arguing that half of the dungeons are potentially gone because of lost guardians proves nothing because as far as we know most players don't know the guardians exist. Finally, it's unclear how many people actually understand the situation with the nether. The group that took Michael on his first rift dive saw it as nothing more than a very dangerous pay day... the idea that the void is conquering the Forever Kingdom would be laughed off I suspect.

Alejandro

I actually think that you are missing something important here guys. Remember that last encounter with Kesh? Michael actually confessed to her that he was a scion, and Kesh explicitly hinted that the brotherhood might help. So she clearly knows something that we don’t. The other thing to consider is how they have have not link themselves to an other power, what if the reason is actually related to the to the conflict between the old powers and the new powers? What if they actually have knowledge of the Primes and to their eyes they where leading the fight against the stygans, while they new Powers just ignore the threat? I know is mostly speculation, but I think Kesh suggestion ads weight to the theory of them having a link to the primes. What do you think?

obiwann

I agree with you on most points however I don’t think the brotherhood is in as much danger as u posit. I think we’re not taking into account that new players don’t know what the powers did in the past nor do the new powers allow for the truth. If all the players knew that the real fight was with the nether and the powers are hiding it and playing stupid games… how long do you think it would be before many rushed to join house wolf? Ironically enough…this time around… while the new powers have numbers on their side (for now) the new powers are in the exact same position the primes were. The system is “broken”. Balance must be achieved or the nether will win. Numbers will soon be on Michael’s side.

David Brewer

The problem is exactly what Michael has been running from for over a year. He has enemies among the Powers... and if the truth heh really when the truth gets out that will become most if not all of them. Honestly, even without the obvious deceptions Michael has presented, the Brotherhood would be stupid to not strongly consider whether the benefits from association with him are worth those risks. They likely realize how petty the Powers can be so they can't even argue, "We never helped him with anything except stygians so leave us alone." They won't care. When the truth is revealed the Forerunners will be hunted unless he has a significant hammer to bully them (The Powers) with. The Brotherhood being overtly allies with the Forerunners could be enough to doom them in that scenario, and having them be active Forerunners? Yeah. The fear is valid. I'm kind of hoping he can get all 6 remaining guardians woken up and use them as leverage. Mm "The day I don't wake the guardians to inform them I'm still alive will be the day they begin to hunt your 'players'." Also, at present the Brotherhood doesn't know just how entwined he is with hunting stygians their fears about becoming entangled with the Powers are their focus.

obiwann

I think at some point the brotherhood would be willing to align with a power whose primary goal is fighting nether.. and gathering power under his roof. The potential for them especially now that one of his tenants is fighting stygians?? They suited well to his house. Those of wolf blood gonna be encouraged to grow… strengthening the brotherhood even more. They t don’t have that with anyone else. Them joining is in their best interest

David Brewer

Heh, I just realized he should make his Awakened Slayer as an elder wolf... it should let his simulacrum use the psi terror howl (fearsome aura). Lol

Thanks for the chapter.

David Brewer

I would expect so yeah. I mean "by the numbers" his mental defense without the torc is effectively 336 (= 240*1.4), but with the torc (ignoring the Awakened Slayer) it probably becomes 396 (=240*1.65) but depending on how the multiplier works it could be 420 (=240*1.4*1.25). And his actual telepathy skill is 237 which is mostly a cosmetic difference. I still wouldn't advise he charge headlong into the mature tree... but having more confidence it can't mind control him when he does face it would be something he'll be happy about.

obiwann

This has to be a direct gift to combat trees ability to attack via this vector

David Brewer

One final note... Given the Adjudicator's obvious happiness? eagerness? whatever adjective you choose... it seems silly to think an item created specifically for a tree slayer would have no value against them. Consider his "rewards" for all of this? The ability to find rifts to fight more stygians... the ability to deepen his wolf mark... by fighting stygians. It boggles the mind that his final reward wouldn't be something helpful to... you guessed it... fight stygians.

David Brewer

Yeah it does depend on details we can't be certain of... but it seems likely the Awakened Slayer would be more in tune to such things than Michael's conscious mind because its entire purpose is to defend against mental incursions unless he sends it into the mind of another. It also seems unlikely that a reward earned from killing a tree (whether first in millenia or not) wouldn't have direct value fighting them. Besides, as much as I hate to suggest it this way... clearly the torc was given to address an obvious weakness without letting it be obvious "plot armor". And the additional 25% to his mental defense isn't nothing... even if I'm wrong about the actual value of the Slayer. Also, it did use the word automatically... suggesting that Michael's defenses might not need to activate or otherwise be effective.

Mohammed Sheekh

That void tree also bypassed the defenses without triggering anything, unless Michael's mind interprets the attack in time then the ability is kinda well...useless, it's all up to the interpretation though

David Brewer

"A level 421 mature void tree’s subliminal command has failed to take root." "it will automatically defend your consciousness from all forms of mental assaults, direct or subversive" If I'm reading that correctly, it should in essence defend (whether effectively or not I don't know) against things like the sly way the mature tree attempted to sneak past his defenses.

Mohammed Sheekh

So uh isn't this kinda ineffective against the void trees?
