Most consensus I've seen argue against them having trunks, as there's no signs of the bone scarring or the like that such muscle tissue would have left.

We don't actually know where the external nostrils were placed, but people that saw where the socket is in the bone decided that with how big they were, they obviously lived in the water, wading around & sticking the top of their head out to breath. We know know that's nonsense, the water pressure would compress their lungs & they certainly could support their own weight on land, but the idea the nostrils were way up top has stuck around until someone can disprove it, which would probably need a full impression of the head (very unlikely). It now though by some the nose was still set back a little from the front of the mouth, but not so far, to help it breath while drinking.

The more common consensus is just that they had fleshy nostrils with big nasal passages.

There's actually a few theories that they might have had a trunk or proboscis like an elephant, especially since they share a similar sort of role in the environment! But that's difficult to conclusively prove without any soft tissue fossil.
