This is a big comment sorry :P. [TL;DR: Kusarigama is just King here, and a sword has too many detriments to be a logical fit for Takumas style. Even what I've decided to put into this reply isn't even all the examples I could come up with. I don't even go into the other weapons i mentioned; and looking at the size of this comment, I don't think i can be bothered to :P] I'm gonna section up my reply in points, just to make it easier for myself to get everything across, okay so: 1. None of his mentors had any real say in his fighting style, they gave him tools to add to his kit, but his style is completely home brewed, his augmentations is proof of how little they had to do with it. And that doesn't make a sword more logical to learn than any of the weapons i mentioned. Not to mention him being awful with a sword, as we've learned. 2. Takumas ANBU name is Ratel, if he was going to become a surgical tricky/slippery hit 'n' run ninja, it's probably the worst possible animal to base that on. His style isn't a clinical fighter, and afaik Guy isn't either (and he's the closest comparison we have seen in the story yet). So it makes no sense to train as a (game terms) dex/int build, when he's clearly a str/int, or even str/endu, or possibly a str/will build. 3. Your logic is flawed with regards to the shadow clones, since any weapon that gets multiplied by clones is gonna be a threat, regardless of type. But where a sword only gives more of the same, something like the Kusarigama, gives multiple options for his clones: 3a. Need to restrict someone non-lethally ? Well you now have 2 -or more- Chakra reinforced chains; on top of your earth and water techniques (which he can also use to reinforce the chain with, use water to switch trajectory or other fun stuff, like lightning enhancing his chain like Sasukes Chidori?). Oh and he can use his augmentation's sticky nature in insane ways here too. 3b. Someone is using a heavy armor-styled technique? And your fists and blades aren't enough to get through the thick layers; because you need concussive force, and not just simple blunt force? Well now you can throw a chain with an Chakra and earth-reinforced weight at the end; with insane superhuman momentum, strength and speed. Which would basically be like a fragmentation grenade that you can reuse on demand. Or just beat the opponents organs into mush, with augmented chain strikes from multiple clones; all while others are binding them. So you're basically ringing them like a bell from overlapping/cascading shock waves, that again could be enhanced further by the nature of water and shock waves. 3c. Need to quietly assassinate someone without much sound? (like what you get from drawing a sword, from a scabbard; in a possibly enclosed space. Wind displacement is also a factor here) Need something that's easy to hide when you're undercover or in deep cover? You now have a weapon where the blade (on some) can be folded, the chain can be wrapped around for extra defense around weak spots, or just be entirely separated making it incredibly easy to conceal. It also has a blade that is incredibly (historically proven) well made for slitting throats and crippling/hobbling, and the chain can also be used for leverage, or enhancing his strikes with a fist wrapped in chain. Or even to counter other close combat threats with throws, locks, holds, or even weapon breaking (leverage). A sword has almost none of that flexibility. It can cut, it can stab, and it can (only if you're overpowering someone already) knock someone unconscious with the blunt side. it's way harder to discard mid-combat, and any time he wants to do seals, he has to sheathe it, throw it, or drop it. Which is the same weakness shared by most big weapons in the Narutoverse, and quite possibly a big reason for so few sword users. Most of the sword users we learn about in Naruto (canon and this story too) are geniuses. And Zakahira Mahachi is a horrible example to use, since he was a literal Jonin level SAMURAI. Takuma would never get even close to a fraction of his skill, ability, knowledge, or honed instincts. ------------------------------------------------------- The only possibly way i can see it be a powerful tool in his kit, would be if he could use it in a concealed way to surprise with, just like we see Orochimaru do with his sword being swallowed, or even hidden inside snakes (iirc, been years since i saw naruto tbh) But if that's not the case then Its just a waste of time to learn kenjutsu just for a slim hope, of maybe gaining some vague skill with a weapon; that doesn't really fit a ninja at all; or something that doesn't already fit into his style. Something like the Kusarigama does this in multiple criteria and it would also further improve his ability with something like his tentacles or grappling.

I’d argue it’s the most logical bladed weapon for him to pick up. It’s a weapon used by his mentors, and by his direct superior (although not at the time of choice), meaning he has 2 teachers in the art of the sword, with a potential third in Mikoto Uchiha. Second, a major part of the struggle Takuma is going through is rebuilding his combat style from someone who brawls, into a clinical fighter who uses Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and surgical Augmentation to take less damage. Throwing in a sword encourages him to keep his distance, and forces his enemies to be wary of it at all times. It also makes his Shadow-clones more dangerous, as any blow could be absolutely lethal. Takuma has also had run ins with several sword wielders that have left noticeable impressions like Kameko, Momoe, and Zakahira Mahachi, who almost killed him and Amami with one swing.

Which is why i mentioned multiple weapons that aren't just blunt force, that fits his combat style way better. A sword is possibly the least logical (bladed) weapon for him to use. And I can explain why and how i believe that to be the case if anybody is interested.

Yes but keep in mind he has his fists for blunt force. The whole point of kenjutsu is to diversify his ability’s, and to give him the option of a blade.

Imo it makes little sense for him to go the kenjutsu route. Some kind of blunt weapon that could amplify his augmentation techniques, enhance the concussive force, and extend the range makes more sense to me at least. A staff weapon, Kusarigama (fills mulitple use-cases), glaive, fist weapons (possibly bladed), or just something like hammers, maces, or warpicks; would all benefit more from a 'strength-based build' like his. Personally i think Kusarigama is probably a nice fit since he can keep a hand free for seals, it massively extends his range, gives a concussive option, further builds on his close combat strengths, gives more options for grappling/restraining, and has wicked synergy with water, earth, and even lightning nature releases. Oh and it fits the ninja theme :P

Elaborate please

Kinda unrelated but I've been thinking about how Tsunade would be such a good mentor for Takuma. Alas...

Sable

He is predominantly a hand to hand fighter, having the sword on his hip will throw him off. Other than that great job as always.

Corvus

Ooh, a prison breakout, Takuma is in for a challenge. Great chapter as always, FOR

One skill that would be quite nice for Takuma to have with the sword would be the laidō of which Mifune was a master of, apparently it’s both faster and stronger than slashes with the sword already drawn. One technique often used by samurai was having the scabbard be longer than the blade to give the illusion of a longer blade and ergo longer draw time in order to surprise the opponent. Of course some samurai sabre techniques in general would also be nice and allow Takuma some sealless mid range techniques which could target several opponents at once. How he gains access to these I wouldn’t know, maybe he gets into some shit and learns from a samurai or maybe Konoha already have access to those techniques but I would assume them to be very expensive or restricted
