I didn't really get the whole 3 dimensional being in a 2 dimensional space and 4th dimensional being in a 3 dimensional space until this, thanks

dyslogorrhea

typo: "Discretely" should actually be "discreetly." from context, the ability is concealed, which is discreet, not discrete.

I think it requires having already seen the 2d/3d demonstration, but I also don't know how you'd do it in text without actually drawing diagrams. But the point isn't to teach the reader about higher dimensions, it's Will that has to learn it, and I think it works great for that.

Barkeep

This was probably the best way to explain a 4th dimensional being I've seen in nerdy sci fi.

Patron1kj6tz

-The students: William Oh and a confused dimwitted rogue he’d pulled off the street. -“Fuck. Off.” Tad said, staring straight into Monroe’s eyes. -Tad never saw them again Well he's obviously not *that* dimwitted

Macronomicon

May i use this one?

Natalie

I think it could be potentially managed in just one one upgrade, add "lingering" to the effect. This then creates a one way deposit box, that anything entered into container a, is transferred to container b, for as long as the effect lasts. This is achievable because it makes no statement that the receiving container must remain on his person, nor does it state that the transmitting container must remain in close proximity. Only that at the point of creation they must, and it's currently an instantaneous effect.

"William Oh forgot how to win. No, listen - to win you have to compete. William Oh doesn't compete, he just is. Water doesn't win against the mountain when it carves a valley, it just is." - Acclaimed Akul City philospher Nicky Phlemel.

TFTC!! Its good that some people are willing to learn and see mercy for mercy. Its also good when scum get dealt with, actions have consequences.

Ral

Color change! Awesome!

Logrus

Might've been intentional, a telephone'd version passed down from pre-tower humanity.

Logrus

Tad is a good egg.

Mrfacemanlol

“In my time, there was something called ‘imagining contrast.’ “ In my time” is ghoul from a previous coil

Macronomicon

I mean...a lot can happen over a few years. but no, we're probably not gonna go there.

RainbowCatTopHat

I was thinking about this some more and thought I could word it better. The statement isn't wrong, it's just misleading. A 4th dimensional being can see the entire universe in the same way we can on a clear night sky (only at all times of the day and in every direction simultaneously). Distance still reduces fidelity of sight. That said they would still have absurd vison by our standards, they see everything around them (In this case 'around' just means the point in 3d space closest to them) all at once and through any obstructions all at once. If one looked at you it would see your internal organs in as equally perfect clarity as your face. They would see as far underground as they can see aboveground in equal clarity. The 'seeing through all obstructions' is insanely useful if you think about it, even if they can't see literally everything in the universe at once (in high fidelity).

s/imagining contrast/imaging contrast

Hell 5pawn

Is this a prelewd to a "pancakes" chapter? I know you've done them before but... I don't know if I'm seeing it with Will. He's too pure.

Patryk Rys

nah nah nah, we had this one immortal with the R in name, hes the oldest old dude, the Ghoul doesn't even remember previous William Ohs, he is old maybe as old as coil, maybe a bit older, but not too much. Few thousand years at best.

Jake

That is honestly one of the best explanations i have ever read of a n dimensional entity in an n-1 dimensional space. Brilliant 👏

Cj

The more we see him the more I wonder, just how old is Ghoul? He’s definitely older than the coil, most likely he was alive in the empire of Tet’kut’kun’lay, but I’m wondering if he’s simply as old as the tower himself, he’s like university level best and brightest smart, just like Holdna.

SunderGoldmane

A back alley dr that started as a pickpocket and is now a surgeon specialist capable of removing wound debris and even curses that are inside the body? That sounds cool. I hope tad grows up to be a cool old man anime style. A patron of the rogues on floor ten. A real hidden master. Kinda want to read this story about him now lol!

SunderGoldmane

Doesnt he have some kind of deal going with the brain crab kin on the ocean floor? Send climbers in need of rehab to them and the crab kin literally rehabilitate them to show them how to live a fulfilling life?

RainbowCatTopHat

"Similarly, a fourth-dimesnional being would be able to see everything in the entire three-D universe all at once" This is *almost* 100% true. A 4th dimensional being could see through walls (Our whole universe would be as flat as a piece of paper to them), but they might still be limited in distance. If the sheet of paper were sufficiently large (like the entire universe) they might not be able to take in everything at once, depending on how large the 4th dimensional being was relative to our universe.

RedInkQuill

Tad got pancakes. The rest got pancaked.

EDMANGO

I think container is cool, what would be interesting is someone who uses container as body and then potentially uses it for surgery, might not work for this guy, but could be really cool for a back alley doctor

Ano Ano

Killer closing line.

Exrotes

I hope Will was lying about killing them, not because they don't deserve punishment but it's a much better practice to ship them down a floor and let them get oathbound for a few years of contract work away from Will.

Flounder

I’m taking this as confirmation that Ghoul is older than the current coil. Medical tech hasn’t evolved enough for imaging techniques in Will’s era and the last time it could have been lost is the turning of the coil. Wouldn’t at all be surprised if he’s on his 3rd class advancement or more, which is why no one’s figured out the trick to his immortality. Could be the combination of a number of primaries/secondaries and climbers don’t expect an 8th floor lord to have that many. Akul only went to the 12th floor, he shouldn’t have been much stronger than Mason is now. Pure speculation, but could he be from the civilization that screwed up the miasma on the 7th-9th floors? It would explain why he’s so knowledgeable and how he carved out a lordship on the most dangerous floor we’ve seen.

zero

upgrade to reverse pickpocket, deliver messages that are hard to trace back to the sender?

Munirah Hutchinson

Tad was saved by his own understanding, aka understanding his own limits

KipBR

*sigh* you can't escape the idiots.

Macronomicon

Can anyone think of a way Tad could make a living delivering things quickly and quietly? Sure he doesn't have enough upgrade slots to make true teleportation, but it's close, and nearly undetectable.
