I think just having tiny little tufts and baubles on them would be fine. It's very much part of Nao's look and seeing them without their ear furniture is quite jarring.

Didn't get a chance to comment on the WIP, but this one rocks. Really enjoy the toon affectations you added here, Naoki looks so smooth and pliable. Also, that style of rubber/spandex/neoprene bare-shoulders top is one of my favorite clothing types, but I've never ever been able to figure out what the official name of the style is! Any idea?
