Arlo passed up an evolution that would have allowed him to easily turn wands and staves into weapons, i.e. store spells in weapons. Then again, a staff is a weapon, and it's a Blunt weapon to boot, for which Arlo has a skill :) And Grotto has Blunt as well, and Xim has it too. Would they want to use a staff to hit things? There are better items with DPS mana weaves... but maybe there's a good use for a spell-storing Blunt weapon. Maybe "staff with a spear head" would technically work. Would it really be two items in one? Hmmmm.....

Not sure what you mean by saying it didn't seem to have much to do with smithing. Caving (The Caving Tree) is a mining technique and root weathering is the process trees undertake to break through things like rocks with their roots. The tree is actively mining metals for an unknown purpose. It appears like a third party came in and altered the environment to take advantage of that. Hinted at, but potential minor spoilers: The tree's curse is acting like an immune system, essentially trying to expel parasitic Delvers or whoever else invaded in the past. In response, these ancient people dropped a machine in there to cure the curse, the process for which requires smithing an item using the materials found inside. The tree alone is not specifically related to smithing, but the overall environment created via the tree's natural process of claiming ore combined with the area's other history has created a mana dense zone where smithing is required to pass through. So long as you are careful the tree will not mind you being there, because it's akin to a bacterium living harmlessly inside of you. It might take a small amount of your resources, but it's negligible. It's discussed in book 4, but I should probably mention it again here in book 5--Dungeons are not System-generated. They are living regions of high mana density involving a skill. The System takes advantage of them to assist Delvers in advancing, but they could be natural areas, ancient sites of lost magic, or just places where powerful items or creatures live. Perhaps I could do a better job communicating what's going on in here.

I wonder if you could make a staff out of metal in the shape of a sword 🤔

Is the layout for the crafting dungeons identical or atleast near identical for each type of crafting skill? Because the tree didnt have very much to do with smithing, and feels like it was a tree because it was in a forest rather than being themed for the crafting skill. But it does make sense for the woodworking dungeon to be in a tree, and if 2 out of 5(? I dont remember how many crafting dungeons there were) are in trees it makes sense the rest of them would be aswell.

Hmm yes, very convenient wake up call, didnt even have to set his own alarm.
