With most of my images, it takes forever even with a nuclear computer, but that's partly due to my tendency to render to the max. The Iray engine shares a lot of similarities to actual film (I used to develop my own film and prints but no longer have the space), so exposure/render time can influence graininess and brightness. A blank background with a few bright spotlights for example will render much quicker than a darkened room with a window. The "light" is then bounced off every surface again and again until the room slowly fills with a soft ambience. There's quite a bit of trail and error, but I kinda find it therapeutic, much like refining a photographic print. Only with slightly less fumes.
