You have to remember, they were dropped behind the line. No prisoners could be kept at the early stages. They couldn't just let them go because they would just rearm themselves. War is hell.

The American fighting for Germany would have been executed as a traitor regardless. Same in any other country. That part has never been proven fact though. There is no evidence of an American fighting for the Nazis, although I wouldn't be surprised if some German-Americans did

Just want to add to the PoW, today we have Geneva Convention. And before that, like Napoleonic times and earlier there was always a expectation/Honourly conduct/Gentleman Code to be taken PoW if you surrender. But in reality there isn't always time or conditions to take PoW. And what always come first is the security of your men, and defeating your enemy. As in this instance, as commented above. They were under orders to not take PoW. Because they were under very hostile conditions, with just having started an invasion. And securing PoW is a very time consuming and logistical task. You need room to facilitate them, men to guard them, feed them and moving them away from the frontline. Well, as said they just landed, they needed every soldier to fight. Securing and establish a foothold in Normandy. So this are some of the hard realities in warfare, and why humanity, kindness is very hard to live up to. And about why someone were smiling, when they found that killed Parachuter. Well, we all react in our own way, experiencing such. Its like someone laugh when they get nervous, and other dont get nervouse. My experience of that scene, is that it was not a "true" smile like happiness. Just their reaction there and then, interpeted differently by us watching. The series will touch this later, as I know you be done by now. So I catch up :)

As far as the prisoners getting cigarettes & then shot in this video, please keep in mind that some were "SS" soldiers. "SS" soldiers were the absolute TRUE NAZI'S in the war and killed many many innocent civilian's throughout the war.

Mennonites are similar, though somewhat less strict. Both are characteristically pacifistic in nature - i.e., didn't believe in war. Both were known as "peace religions." Many conscientious objectors who were allowed to opt out of serving in combat on religious grounds were members of these and similar religious groups. Suffice it to say, very few practicing members actually went to war. Being accused of being one in combat was not a complement. It was basically tantamount to being called a coward, though this was generally not a fair assessment as demonstrated by Desmond in Hacksaw Ridge, a Seventh Day Adventist (another peace religion) who served bravely but refused to take up arms.

Yes I agree that this series is a difficult watch because well, this actually happened and they don't hold back on the brutality of war. As well as showing the not so humane behavior on both sides of the fight. But I feel that it is important to see and understand the reality of war and how it affects all the soldiers. That's why the series is so well done and has a lot of high praise. TY TY again. And yes things do intensify in many many ways as the series goes on.

In the early stages of the Normandy invasion allied forces had strict orders to NOT take prisoners. Once the invasion was over with and they secured the beachhead they changed the orders and began taking prisoners.
