Runólfur - Full Body Fur Test
🕑 Added 2019-04-21 18:53:44 +0000 UTCSo now that I'm relatively satisfied with the lizard character I just made I decided to go back and start finishing up some details on the wolf boy. His hair was still bugging me so I started tweaking it, but no matter what I do I just can't seem to get a satisfying blend between real fur and fake textured 2D fur, so finally after ages of fussing around I gave up in frustration and decided to try full body real fur.
The reason I didn't initially do this is because messing around super early in my 3D learning showed my computer just couldn't handle that many hairs, and I also usually find that fully furred 3D models usually look kinda terrifying. But after tons of fighting and screwing around I found some settings that ease the load a bit, and I think I'm on to something that doesn't look too bad. This is sort of a quick test, there's rough patches and some of the blending between areas of fur isn't quite right, but I don't look at him and immediately recoil in disgust the way I've done from other furred 3D models, heh.
The reason we're not actually seeing his whole body is because I've just about hit the limits of my RAM. If I want to take this route in making models, and especially if I want to put multiple characters together, I'ma need some more ram. Fortunately that's a relatively inexpensive upgrade so I think that's worth giving a go.
In the mean time, figured you guys might be curious to take a peek at what I've been working on the last little bit. What do you think of this fully fluffy version?

That might be a really good way to do it; keep everything static except for certain pieces like maybe a bit of the tailtip and mane. Would be opposite the way that I've seen a lot of other animators do it, which is animate everything and then make problem areas static, which always looks wonky to me at the worst and distracting at best. Excited to see!

Currently the way I have the hair set up, it isn't animated at all- it's just rigidly stuck to the skin and moves however the skin moves. I think that for the most part that'll work just fine, though I might experiment with motion in some of the longer tufts of his hair... but I got a ways to go before I start worrying about that too much. Hell, he's still naked from the waist down even, poor guy. x3 But yeah, we'll see how it goes!

Whoa this looks really awesome! I definitely agree that I think you've found a good way to represent the fluffiness without it looking weird. I will say though that fur/hair physics with a screenshot are way different than with moving models, and that I think a lot of animators make the fur move too much when motion is involved. I would definitely love seeing a small movement render when you can get your memory upgraded enough to do it! This guy is looking so good :)

I've always liked more realistic art. Too many pictures where the character looks like they are made of colored spandex or something. So this is right up my alley!

I'm still working on polishing up some of my skills, but I definitely want to try taking at least one model commission at some point in the future, seems like it could be fun!
