Phillip Bates

This movie is soooo good. I have always loved it. And Marilyn was fantastic here. And I also loved "What's Up Doc?".Another great classic movie. Loved your reaction!

Marja

His films were usually taken over by the studios and he lost director’s control. They would not be cut to his intended vision.

Richard Maurer

?

bgb1975

As a self-proclaimed "neo-maxi-zoom-dweebie" Superman fanboy, I don't think that Superman III was terrible. I know that the termination of Richard Donner by the producers was a sour note, but the film had some bright elements, which I think Cassie would enjoy - particularly Lana Lang. Superman IV - yes, it was terrible. Superman Returns was ok. Man of Steel was largely forgettable.

Stick Figure Studios

I don't hate RADIO FLYER, but it's a very problematic movie.

V M

That's be sad because part 3 was the best one

Mike Lemon

@Stick - Radio Flyer was pretty good. It is not a good fit for theaters though.

JC762

I have a feeling that after AP2, part 3 is going to be a hard sell for Cassie.....we'll see.

Stick Figure Studios

@Gabor: Yeah, if it really had been 80% Donner in the theatrical cut, Lester could not have gotten the directorial screen credit per DGA rules.

Stick Figure Studios

Donner is a better director at certain kinds of movies. Lester is a better director at other kinds (Donner can't do comedy, for example). Both have made their share of great films (Donner did SUPERMAN, THE OMEN and the LETHAL WEAPON series, for example, while Lester did HARD DAY'S NIGHT, 3/4 MUSKETEERS and ROBIN AND MARION) as well as their share of clunkers (Donner did THE TOY, TIMELINE and RADIO FLYER, for example, while Lester did SUPERMAN 3 and RETURN OF THE MUSKETEERS).

Marja

Except for Orson Welles films!

Richard Maurer

Agree

Clarence Newman

In all seriousness, Richard (very hard for me normally), as long as the original version is still out there for a quick flyby, I would be happy to watch any length of LoTR extended. Give me 10 hour installments, I'll watch it.

Richard Maurer

@ Clarence - I’ve heard that PJ has 2 hours of footage from the trilogy that he’s thinking about adding for the 25th anniversary (sorry, I don’t think Tom is in it). Personally I hope this happens, both because I want to see it and I want hear all the whining about how it’s “too long” and “ ruins the flow”.

Gábor Árki

@David, besides the obvious differences, Lester re-shot several scenes that have already been recorded by Donner, so that he can meet the requirements of getting the sole directorial credit for the movie.

DAVID COSTELLO

Richard Donner is definitely the better director. I heard one person say that when Richard Lester worked by himself, he gave us Superman 3. That should say it all right there.

Clarence Newman

Lord of The Rings was too short. Jackson could have at least squeezed in an hour of Tom Bombadil.

Stick Figure Studios

Oh, he's made several great films: A HARD DAYS NIGHT, THREE/FOUR MUSKETEERS, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, JUGGERNAUT and ROBIN & MARIAN.

Stick Figure Studios

For the theatrical cut, Lester shot *POSSIBLE SPOILERS* the opening Paris segment, all the Niagara Falls stuff, all of the stuff with the three Kryptonians in the small town, all of the stuff with Lois and Superman in the Fortress of Solitude, parts of the climactic battle in Metropolis, the "Super amnesia kiss" scene, the finale with Superman at the White House and a few bits and pieces (some comic and some serious) sprinkled throughout... some scenes are actually a combination of footage shot by both directors. When you look at how much of Donner's work ended up in the Lester cut, it's not really that much (Donner himself even said it was probably only about 20%). For the Donner cut, they kept everything from the theatrical version that he shot (even extending some scenes that were cut short by Lester like all of the Lex Luthor bits), restored all the unused stuff, inserted a couple screen tests, filmed a few new shots and used a little bit of Lester's footage to fill in the gaps. In the end, both are patchwork quilts.

David Freese

Mmm noo its 80 percent Donner look at both versions. They have alot of the same footage and only Lester's stuff was taken out for the Donner cut cut. Only thing Lester did was in Paris, the fight scenes at the end and any comedy bits.

David Freese

Its was the beginning towards what killed the original movie franchise.

pat on

you have to pay for those

Analytical Guy

I can't be objective about the Donner cut. There were some things about Superman 2 that bugged me, and the Donner cut handled them better, and added one wonderful scene/idea that was way better than the choice from the theatrical version. That made me very happy when I saw the Donner cut, but as others have pointed out, there were probably continuity issues and other problems that I didn't notice because my brain filled in the gaps from having already seen the theatrical cut. I would warn Cassie about small spoilers in other posts, but I find it hard to believe she actually goes through and reads all of these messages. So I guess she'll be safe.

Richard Maurer

We know Kubrick didn’t film the moon landing because he would have had to change the narrative to make it his own.

Richard Maurer

Well that’s a opinion. A opinion I completely disagree with, but still an opinion. RotK extended, like the other extended editions, is virtually flawless - one of the three greatest films ever made - imo, which is always the correct opinion….for me.

V M

The 1969 moon landing is my favorite Kubrick film

Witchfinder General

Return of the King theatrical is long enough as it is. All the crap with the mad steward is unwatchable, Jackson really screwed it up the way he handled that story thread - the last thing it needs is more extraneous sub plot

Richard Maurer

That’s why they’re exceptions, not the rule :-) and you included Return of the King by mistake. I mean it must be a mistake, right? Because RotK is one the best extendeds ever.

Brian Cowgill

Hopefully Carly will watch grumpier old men with you she loved the first one.

Witchfinder General

@Richard Considering by this point there are hundreds of directors cuts and extended cuts of films, the minority of of them that improve the theatrical do not disprove my argument. For every Fellowship of the Ring, or Blade Runner Final Cut, there's an inferior baggy, overly-long, extended cut of Lawnmower Man, Something About Mary, E.T, Apocalypse Now, Donnie Darko, Dumb and Dumber, Return of the King, Donnie Brasco, Natural Born Killers, Terminator 2, Mallrats, The Blues Brothers...

Clarence Newman

Jaws 3 is worth watching, if only to satisfy the conspiracy theorists that the 1968 moon landing (15 years earlier) could not have been faked using CGI.

Clarence Newman

Lester did make a great film, y'all. It's called A Hard Day's Night.

Clarence Newman

Decent films, guys, but where's the love for STIR CRAZY?

V M

Agreed

Rick Moreno

I agree. Too bad we can't have a mega Donner/Lester cut with Marlon Brando in it, but the theatrical ending, less some of Lester's sillier sight gags.

JONATHAN REDFERN WILLIAMS

The reason Marlon Brando does not appear in the theatrical version is because he insisted to paid the same enormous fee he received for the first film (and a percentage of the profits!). Brando himself states this in his own autobiography but in understating it "They asked if they could use the footage of me in the sequel. I asked for my usual fee, they refused and so did I!"

Richard Maurer

Except for LotR, Kingdom of Heaven, Doctor Sleep,……

Mark White

Normally would do the same as I have no idea about the Donner cut, however a few people on here who’s opinion I respect seam to indicate it should be the Theatrical cut. So I’ve gone for that.

Witchfinder General

More often than not the theatrical is better than the extended cut

Mark White

I may have mentioned this one or ten times before! But for me, Superman 3 is in the very ‘Bad 3 group’ with, Beverly Hills cop 3, Crocodile Dundee 3 and Jaws 3! In my humble opinion!

scott osborne

i prefer the og cut myself

Richard Maurer

Except there are exceptions to every rule - like this one

Sean

Id recommend the theatrical cut as its the one that 90 percent of viewers will have seen.

Richard Maurer

Damn you spell check! When I write Clouseau I mean Clouseau! (it tried to change it again).

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, that's weird.

Elias Shaikh

The Donner cut changes the story. Honestly, I didn’t like it. The Theatrical cut in 1980 resulted in such a boost in popularity of the franchise that Christopher Reeve became the living image of what people wanted Superman to be. Some critics even said that the sequel was even more enjoyable than the original first film. The extended scenes in the TV release complimented the theatrical, and I recall seeing it run longer on cable TV in the early 80s.

Clarence Newman

Spookily enough, guys, The Great Race is getting some good discussion time in the Some Like It Hot thread. Feel free to pile on.

(Nolo)finwe

Always watch what the Director intended if possible

John Adams

Also the Donner Cut has the problem that it has Superman beating up a guy for something that guy never did in that version of reality

Josh Knight

Watch both! 😂 The Donner Cut is fun to see what was originally planned. The ending would have been different if Donner stayed on. I also feel like the theatrical version is more campy.

Clarence Newman

Hold on. I withdraw my Croc Dundee remark. Respect must be maintained.

Clarence Newman

And I would usually use your post to pop in a recommendation for Rebel Without a Cause. Unfortunately, I think it's a pretty so-so movie. Give me some Paul Newman or Steve McQueen instead!

Clarence Newman

Balls to the in crowd.

Clarence Newman

You're clearly thinking of Jacques Clouseau, the intrepid inventor of the aqua-lung. And Crocodile Dundee is God!

Silver Machine

The biggest problem with the Donner Cut is that it doesn’t have a proper ending. Donner never got a chance to film it and the ending that is used for this alternate cut is NOT what would be there if he had actually finished the film. Yes, there’s a lot of interesting material in this version. But it doesn’t mean much if you haven’t already seen the theatrical cut. Without that point of reference, the Donner cut is a lot of continuity errors and the most disappointing ending ever. Theatrical Cut is the way to go.

Richard Maurer

Hey I heard there are some witches over on Disney+, shouldn’t you be finding them?

Richard Maurer

Inspector Cousteau would have been a good choice. CD 2, not so much.

Silver Machine

That’s not the case with Superman 2. The theatrical cut is easily available to stream on Max and Amazon Prime.

Richard Maurer

Really? Several people here have said the opposite.

Richard Maurer

Well at this point I’m not sure it matters. I doubt if directors cut can make that big of a comeback. So do you want to be in with the in crowd or a rebel with a lost cause?

Richard Maurer

Goldmember yes, Superman 3 no. It’s definitely in the unnecessary sequel category.

Richard Maurer

If I didn’t know the scene you’re referring to I might think you all were really pissed at each other.

Don Dunco

Never knew there WAS a Donner cut until this poll....and I agree with Adino1.

bgb1975

I had to do some soul-searching on this one. I was canvassing for the Donner cut, but after some reflection, and reading some comments, I think it probably would be best for Cassie to see the theatrical version first. But there's one particular scene from the Donner cut which is just so good, and adds so much to the story. It drives me nuts that the theatrical version didn't include it. Almost as nuts as the fact that we can't discuss until and unless Cassie sees them both.

Ted Little

The movie that was popular in the theatres was, of course, the theatrical cut. The movie the producers wanted shown was the theatrical cut. Donner was only the director. In the interests of full disclosure though, I must point out that I did not care for either version and will not be watching.

crazyivan

That's my girl...Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon and another round with Mick (Burgess Meredith)...plus two of the most beautiful women to ever emerge from Hollywood - Sophia Loren and Ann-Margret. But I'd prefer a beer commercial to Austin Powers.

Witchfinder General

Who cares, Superman films are rubbish

Gábor Árki

The way I see it the Lester version is an actual movie. Despite how great it is that we got to see it, the Donner cut isn't. It is just a taste, a bonus material of what it could have been.

Clarence Newman

You say....WHAT??? Cassie, I understand you watching Austin Powers and Superman, but how did Grumpier Old Men make the cut with its paltry 13%? If I'm out shopping and I notice my phone is on 13% battery, I turn into Arnold Schwarzenegger: "GET TO THE CHARGEEEEEER!!" You Popcorn picked it, didn't you? You Popcorn picked two old codgers over Crocodile Dundee and Inspector Clouseau. How the very could you??!! Time out. Time out. I'm burnin'. My lungs are burnin'.

pat on

it's always harder to find the theatrical cut what are you people doing!

Clarence Newman

Although, due to my OCD in regard to such things, I need to see how the voting's going. In order to do that.....I need to vote.

Stick Figure Studios

Absolutely agree on THE ODD COUPLE. That's essential Matthau- Lemmon viewing.

Stick Figure Studios

Gee, that's funny. I've never seen garbage spout garbage before.

Clarence Newman

I will not be voting on this poll, on the grounds that I would have no idea what I was voting for. Or against.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, I think Lester did as good a job as anyone could have done in that situation. Like you, there are things I like about the Donner cut (seeing Brando again) and things I like about the Lester cut (I actually prefer the way Lois learns Clark's identity in his version), but overall I think Lester's is the better movie.

Stick Figure Studios

I actually think the Lester cut is the better movie overall, but the Donner cut at least provides a glimpse (through as glass darkly) into what *could* have been had he been allowed to finish it properly back in 1979.

Gábor Árki

Absolutely. Lester was put in an impossible spot as well, taking over a film that was already 70-80% shot by someone else, with one lead actor refusing to continue and another who he has to remove to avoid further financial obligations. This inevitably led to a patchwork feel in places. For example, once you notice how the Luthor scenes are pieced together, it’s hard not to see. But at least he had the time and money to somehow work around these issues. But the Donner cut was an even bigger impossible challenge, as a significant portion of the movie simply hadn’t been filmed. No matter what you do, you simply can't finish it properly decades later. And I'm saying that as someone who does prefer multiple things in the Donner cut. The less cartoonist tone, the way Lois discovers it not by accident but by outsmarting, etc.

Shawn Kildal

Another factor is the theatrical version is streaming in multiple sites, unless you own the Donner cut one would have to buy or rent it to watch along.

Shawn Kildal

She sort of promised Grumpier earlier in the year if I recall correctly. My guess is she thought this would be a good way to squeeze it in. Again, pure speculation on my part.

Philip Alan

I think the other version needs to make them, four eyes.

Shawn Kildal

Her "tonight's" usually means 5am or so

Shawn Kildal

Perfect answer

Shawn Kildal

I remember Cassie chuckling during the young Clark running vs the train in the first movie, I feared some scenes in the Donner cut would get the same response because it's unfinished and spoty. Particularly the Lois and Clark scene at the Daily Planet toward the first part of the movie.

Ulf Jerlström

this is the correct answer

Stick Figure Studios

I've heard it said that the theatrical version is 80% Lester and 20% Donner while the Richard Donner cut is the opposite (80% Donner and 20% Lester), so neither film is really the complete vision of either director, both are patchwork quilts and once you know where to look, the seams are obvious.

Cliff Stephenson

Here’s the thing… the Donner Cut is a better movie, but it’s an incomplete movie. It is something you can only truly appreciate after you’ve seen the theatrical cut and know the production backstory. My heart is with the Donner Cut but my brain knows it HAS to be the theatrical cut.

Adino1

Both. But really, for a first viewing it HAS to be the Theatrical Cut.

Stick Figure Studios

Well, the Donner cut is certainly closer to what he would have wanted, but it's still incomplete. At best, it's a glimpse into what could have been, a worthwhile experiment that I'm glad exists but certainly does not replace the official film. I would recommend it for comparison to anyone who has seen Lester's theatrical cut first.

Rick Moreno

I enjoy both of them, and the Donner Cut is what Donner wanted, but it is admittedly really short, and has a couple of things missing. Watch the theatrical for the channel, you can go back and watch the Donner Cut sometime for a fun comparison.

V M

Yeah, she had her problems

rakesh

I've watched both I really enjoyed the Donner cut but the theatrical movie was the one I watched and re watched as a kid so it's got to be that.

Gábor Árki

And it even uses some scenes from rehearsal takes to fill in the gaps, because some important ones haven't been recorded yet. He was able to shoot ~70-80% of the material he wanted. And by far the biggest problem is that when Donner was fired, not just they didn't shot an ending yet but it hasn't even been written, due to the originally planned having been pulled forward into the 1st movie. The RDC is great in giving a taste of what could have been, but given it is not a properly finished movie it only works after having seen the theatrical version first.

JC762

Agree with Matt

clutchkman

That's going to be a great week! I love it! I haven't seen the Donner cut, so I'm "Super" curious, but from what I've read, the original is the one to see if you only watch one. All of these movies are so good, I can't wait! Thanks Cassie, wishing many "Tender November" blessings on you and yours. P.S. No need to watch Superman 3 or 4 imo.

Carol_White

I voted for "Blue Velvet."

Shane Drum

Both versions are pretty awesome.....one difference between them that's impossible to miss is how Margot Kidder aged like 20 years between the first filmed and subsequent scenes....that's drugs/alcohol damage for you.....

Stick Figure Studios

Man, just the trailer made me cry.

Stick Figure Studios

The Donner cut didn't come out until 2006, 26 years after the theatrical release. Donner was still alive, but Marlon Brando and Christopher Reeve had passed away by that point.

Stick Figure Studios

Too soon to tell on either.

Chris Thom

The Donner Cut came out soon after the theatrical? Or after he died?

V M

If Cassie is going to watch Superman 3, please please please watch Goldmember too.

Vlad D

Hi Cassie. I really hope you and Carley do a reaction for, An Officer and a Gentleman

Matt Rose

I've heard that that documentary is wonderful.

Matt Rose

Theatrical. The Theatrical cut is a complete film, even if it isn't completely Donner's vision. The Donner cut uses the cut scenes that Donner originally filmed BUT also uses elements...avoiding spoilers here...from the first film in order to try and complete the film as it was originally conceived. The Donner cut is a great theoretical 'what if' curiosity but it's an incomplete film. Watch it AFTER watching the Theatrical cut.

V M

I liked both those movies

V M

Robert da Spruce's avatar is still mesmerizing

Jay

I would also strongly suggest a quick reaction to the trailer for Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve story maybe after the reaction to Supes II.

V M

I voted for the theatrical release

Stephen Last

The Superman Theme is so iconic. I am currently watching a new documentary on John Williams. I knew he did the theme for this, Star Wars and almost every Spielberg movie. There is so much more I didn't know.

greggreggreg2000

You are so generous to us! Thank you for watching 3 sequels to make a vast majority of the voters happy!

Mike LL

The Great Race is a fantastic movie, Dave, and I was thinking Cassie should follow Grumpier Old Men with The Odd Couple (1968).

Ryan Towell

Yeah well where I'm at it's no longer tonight, it's turning into Monday so just curious

Stick Figure Studios

Maybe someday. I love THE GREAT RACE, but it's often like pulling teeth trying o get a classic movie reacted to on this channel.

Stick Figure Studios

Maybe the other version would like to step outside.

Stick Figure Studios

Same.

Vlad D

🪨 📃 ✂️

Philip G.

Hey guys iv never seen any version . So my vote is for sell to the highest bidder 😉

Patrick Flanagan

The Donner Cut is best viewed as an historical curiosity and I wouldn't recommend as the first version to watch.

Dave

Too late now, but I would have liked for Cassie to follow Some Like it Hot with Curtis and Lemmon in "The Great Race"

Jack Urmson

The Richard Donner cut means well, but for your first time watching it, the theatrical is better. One scene in particular shows how incredible of an actor Christopher Reeve was in the Donner cut. But it would be best to watch the theatrical version, then go back and check out that scene in the Donner cut.

Cody Nelson

I’m voting for the theatrical version mainly because it is a finished film however I would strongly recommend you watch the Donner cut at some point. It’s very different from the theatrical version. In fact half the movie is brand new. It has all the Marlon Brando footage that they ended up cutting from the theatrical version. It’s a real shame that Donner was never able to finish the movie as he intended. Overall I probably prefer the Donner cut despite some of its flaws however if the movie had been finished the way dinner wanted I’ve no doubt it would easily be the better of the two versions.

Ricardo Rodriguez

Kneel before Theatrical Cut!

David Ulrich

It is a great one, no doubt about that.

Cole Jennett

Read her words

Scott Macaulay

Theatrical is a much tighter edited movie

Richard Maurer

As a fan of The Fly, I am not amused.

Stick Figure Studios

I literally just watched that again the other day for the first time in a long time. It still holds up.

Stick Figure Studios

DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES has imo the best performance ever given by an actor in a movie.

Joe Rambo

Austin Powers 2 is gonna be a very fun watch can’t wait

Shawn Kildal

I just read Grumpier Old Men is in the mix too! Cassie is giving Jack Lemmon some love. His best performance, to me anyways, is Days of Wine and Roses. So memorable. Hopefully one day though. Excited for next week for sure!

Julie

I would love for her to watch the China Syndrome as well. She should do a Jack Lemmon poll.

Stick Figure Studios

Correct.

Stick Figure Studios

Seriously. I have little doubt The version that Donner would have made would have been the best of all, but of the versions that actually exist, Lester's is superior.

Stick Figure Studios

The more great films a person watches, the more of Jack Lemmon they're going to see.

Stick Figure Studios

I don't get it either.

Ryan Towell

Theater cut of course.. But where is Some like it Hot been waiting all week and now the week is over still hasn't posted.. :(

Mike LL

Cassie will also be doubling her exposure to Jack Lemmon. She's seen him in two movies (The Apartment, Grumpy Old Men), soon it will be four!

Shawn Kildal

Donner is one of my favorite directors, but I'm going with the theatrical version.

Richard Maurer

Sure, but don’t bet your life savings on it.

Dan M

Really guy?! Why can’t you just keep comments like this to yourself?

Dan M

I can’t imagine why anyone would want Cassie to watch an incomplete version of a movie before watching what everyone else saw in the theaters. What frame of reference would she have in watching a different version of the original before watching the original? I don’t get it.

_tragicmike

The Donner Cut is an interesting experiment but it's not really a movie. I wish Donner could have finished it for real.

Kevin Charley

Some people have to argue with everything

Stick Figure Studios

Absolutely.

DSM The Editor

Theatrical. The Donner Cut is interesting but feels unfinished, so it's better to look at it through the lens of already being familiar with the original version (which is fantastic by itself)

Stick Figure Studios

I wouldn't say it's "more" comical. I would just say it's comical in different ways. Donner's cut also has a lot of goofy humor in it.

Lucien

I love Richard Donner and think he is an amazing director. That said, I would go with the theatrical cut. I saw the Donner cut and remember liking the theatrical better. You could always go back and watch the Donner cut later if you wanted. Superman I & II are awesome. The rest of the series kind of fell apart. Terence Stamp crushed it as Zod.

Dan M

100% agree with the suggestion for Road to Perdition.

Stick Figure Studios

Yeah, it brings me no pleasure to say it, but Lester actually handles the relationship stuff better than Donner does.

Kevin Charley

No way she should watch the theatrical.

Dan M

Okay, this is weird. I said the exact same thing about playing a lottery game, before I read any of these comments. So it’s gotta be karma, right?

Stick Figure Studios

Also, SILVER STREAK.

Stick Figure Studios

That would be the theatrical I believe.

Cole Jennett

You feel lucky, my vote finished 3rd and it’s still being watched😂

Dan M

This is definitely a first for me. The top two movies that I was going back and forth with as to which one I would vote for are tied at the top! So tomorrow, I will be going to play some kind of lottery game. I’ve gotta ride this sudden surge of luck I’m experiencing.

René Ferland

I remember Cassie complaining about the lack of romance in the first one. I feel Lester's movie is better (than RD) in that respect. Also, she watched the first one (you can not be more Donner than that) and that did not trigger for her the need to watch the second one.

Brian's Dog

I own both but I think the one that is most easily streamable by the greatest number of people should be chosen.

Scott

See No Evil, Hear No Evil is hilarious!

Richard Maurer

Having seen both versions I have to go with theatrical.

Stick Figure Studios

ROAD TO PERDITION is a great movie.

Cole Jennett

My intro to Daniel Craig

Stick Figure Studios

The scenes with Annette O'Toole's Lana Lang are also good.

Stick Figure Studios

@Cole: True... Can you imagine if this poll were to tie?

Dave

I love a theme week, and these three will make for some great reaction content. As for the "Cut Poll", my vote goes to the theatrical cut.

Stick Figure Studios

I still prefer the first one, but Letser's movie is still damn good.

Mike Lemon

Pretty much.

Ross Cicero

I’ll admit- the scene in which Superman fights Clark Kent was pretty well done but other than that it had zero merit

Richard Maurer

So it’s the end of the world, huh?

Stick Figure Studios

Definitely not inarguably. Many of us, including me, think the theatrical cut is the better movie.

Philip Alan

I have the unfinished version. Which is hard to watch. Is there a finished RD version?

Richard Maurer

Well don’t let that stop you, it certainly doesn’t stop most people here.

Walter

I really dislike Austin Powers, but I do enjoy Dr Evil, so there ya go. The Donner cut of Superman II is better, but I agree you have to know the movie to really appreciate the differences. The theatrical has some good stuff and some of the worst stuff to ever be a part of a comic book adaptation. Reeves is still solid though.

Stick Figure Studios

I've always felt that Lester was unfairly maligned for "adding to much humor" into the sequel. If the Donner cut reveals anything, it's that there was already plenty of goofy humor in the movie already (I mean, Lester was not the one who gave us *SPOILER* a flashing toilet in the Fortress of Solitude). Also, and it brings me no pleasure to say this, Lester handles the emotional/relationship stuff better than Donner does.

Cole Jennett

Still a long ways to go for that Stick, but it’s a start

Starpartyguy

Siskel and Ebert were the go to movie critics back in the 70’s and 80’s. They suggested that Superman 2 was the movie they should have made first. They said, in order to have a great hero, you need an evil villain. The more despicable the villain, the greater the triumph in the end.

Mike Lemon

"So I will be watching ... Grumpier Old Men!" What? Is that a typo? You're planning on watching a movie I voted for. I think the last time that happened was The Natural. Time for me to buy that lottery ticket.

Cole Jennett

I thought we were going to have to go another year without Grumpier Old Men, so happy she turned it into a theme week!

Jay

Having seen both, do the theatrical. It will make more sense and is a proper film. Donner’s would have been good if it was completed. With all that said, you need to watch Road to Perdition with Tom Hanks. His finest film.

D. T. Nelson

The theatrical cut is the one streaming on Max and Amazon Prime (and the version on the copy I own).

Brian McGovern

Then it will be Rock Scissor PAPER. Maybe Ro sham bo. Some will get that.

Diiirk706

Fuck mel gibson.

Stick Figure Studios

It's restoring my faith in humanity.

Cole Jennett

I think we need Superman 3 eventually. 4 can be skipped. We need some Richard Pryor so we can watch Brewster’s Millions and See no Evil, Hear no Evil.

Stick Figure Studios

^This.

YodatheHobbit

I guess wannabe film critics/nostalgia/you-must-do-like-we-do win again. Unless you wanna rock paper scissors it.

Stick Figure Studios

Yup.

Brian McGovern

I am fine with either, but do not delve any deeper. I thought 3 was okay when I was younger, but I didn't know any better. 4 was bad even then. It is a shame. Christopher got shafted on that because of the studio cut the budget in half.

Celeste McAllister

That's a great lineup for this week, appreciate your watching them all. :)

Michael Tuffin

The RD cut is inarguably better. The Reeves/Brando dialogue alone proves this.

Ross Cicero

I’m sure it’s bad but I’ve never seen it so it didn’t sit well with me to comment on it

Zeroarmor7

I misread it and thought it was a "superman" poll....I was looking for the Henry Cavill one

Cole Jennett

If it wasn’t for Superman 3, would we have Office Space?😂

Stick Figure Studios

3 is a few good scenes, characters and ideas in search of a movie. It's not really good, but it has its moments. The fourth one is crap.

John

The theatrical, if they hadn't intended to add a little humor to it, they wouldn't have went and got Richard Lester to direct it, he was known for always trying to have sight gags and humor in his movies a lot of the time.

Zeroarmor7

And #4....don't forget about that one

Larry Darrell

An introduction to Sophia Loren. Sweet! Perhaps we can work backwards from this point with Sophia Loren and Ann Margret. Back to the 60s and 50s. I’m fine with some younger Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau too, I guess. To each their own ;-)

Jackie McDonalds

whatever you do skip Superman 3 and 4

Michael Enos

I think watching the theatrical cut is essential to understanding what changes were made in Richard Donner's cut.

Chris Retzlaff

This is super fun Cassie, and appreciate this poll. I can't wait for this weekend

Mike LL

Richard Lester made a great film, I think Cassie will like it! I always liked the second one, the Lester one, better than the first movie.

Alex Villarreal

Going to sit this poll out. I grew up with the theatrical and watched the Donner cut when I was a student—I enjoyed that cut, but don’t remember enough to make an informed decision here.

David Freese

Yeah but the theater version was not what was originally intended. Too much comedy but ill will have fun no matter which one gets picked.

diego kontarovsky

one million percent you have to watch the theatrical cut. the donner cut is not a complete movie. it doesn't even have an ending. you can watch the donner cut later on if you want, but your first viewing has to be the theatrical cut or the experience will be ruined

Joel Cagle

I can't believe anyone voted for the Theatrical release of Superman 2 much less that it would currently be winning the poll. This is making lose hope I. humanity 🤣🤣

Stick Figure Studios

Agreed.

Hide the cannoli

Cassie

hmmm perhaps

Please, God, let the theatrical cut win. It's easily the better version. It is an actual movie whereas the Richard Donner cut (as shamefully as Donner was treated by the producers and as glad as I am that he got to do it) is really just an extended special feature. If you're only going to watch one, definitely the theatrical. TRDC is only interesting in comparison to the theatrical.

Robert da Spruce

Honestly can’t remember if I’ve ever seen the director’s cut. But I guess I’ll vote for it just so I can see it for sure 😊

Cassie

oooohhh ill check it out!

Ross Cicero

Having never seen the Richard Donner cut and the theatrical cut being an important part of my childhood I had to opt for the latter (incidentally please skip 3. It’s garbage)

Luke Godfrey

Stick with the theatrical cut. It’s more readily available and it’s the version we first watched all those years ago.

Johnny Salinas

New movie with Mel Gibson called "Monster Summer" on Amazon is pretty fun 😀

Ron

In this case and for a first time watch, definitely theatrical for me. The RDC is interesting but, IMHO, only in retrospect after having seen the theatrical versions of S1 and S2 which were originally intended to b a single movie.

Clay F

I voted theatrical cut. Loking forward to Superman 2. Austin Powers 2 can be funny at times. Can't wait for the f*** jokes in Grumpier Old Men.

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

The Snyder cut of the Donner cut 😆 (No, it's not a thing, I just wanna see how mad people get)

Bill Maurer

What happens if this poll ends in a tie?? I know! “ The Searchers “!

Cole Jennett

This will be a fun week!

Alex Tan

As with the majority of patrons, I vote for the theatrical cut. I have a gut feeling that this is the version that Addie Counts plans on watching.

T.J. Gengler

Grumpier Old Men is a hoot and a half. Can’t wait!

Wes

Theatrical is the better version imo

Todzilla

The theatrical cut is more "comical". Which I think works better for Cassie. It's also how we all saw it originally.

Neil Varma

Donner

Gray

Great week of movies

Lance Li

Both. But first theatrical.
