Everyone's already said the 3 opinions that exist about this movie, so I just wanna mention this: For some reason the crane sequence really got to me this time. Not watched this in a few years, and for once you weren't even crying, but I was. It might just be my favourite on-screen Spider-Man moment ever.

i feel like the promise was more like "dont be doing spidey shit around gwen" like, hanging out at school and stuff is fine, but dont go on some joyride with her swinging around the city making it clear that she's close to spiderman, putting a target on her. Despite all the issues with these films they are FAR MORE comic accurate than Tom's or Toby's films. In the comics peter's parents were spies for example and connors is one of peter's best friends and allies but also one of his worst enemies in the comics.

Just a note, Andrew being "too hot to be Peter and too cool" is a giant misconception. Peter in comics WAS hot, and skating doesn't make someone immediately cool. In fact in 2012 skate culture was heavily seen as dated and "hipster emo dork" things. And comic Peter wasn't a dork anyways. That was an invention of the Raimi film. In fact comic Peter had kind of a dangerous attitude problem where he would get angry over being rejected like "Oh I'm such a nice guyyy, y'all are all horrible!".

I just realized rewatching this movie - Peter goes to Gwen straight after his fight with Curt in the sewers - after he was swooshing around head to foot in sewer water. You're telling me Peter went to Gwen's without taking a shower and they were smooshing? XD

The sequel has it's highlights, and totally nails one thing from the Spider-Man lore amazingly well. But damn if there isn't some really shoddy stuff thrown in there with it. It's all such a shame because Garfield was giving it his all.

Everyone always says AG isn't as a good Peter Parker as he is a Spider-Man and I couldn't disagree more. When Steve Ditko and Stan Lee created Spider-Man it was the early 60s and Peter was a traditional nerd: a "science whiz," a "bookworm." Garfield's Peter is a modern (for 2012) nerd, a little socially awkward, doesn't care about fitting in, in his own little world making gadgets with arduinos and watching science videos on YouTube. We nerds come in all shapes and sizes including ones with attractive symmetrical features. I think that Garfield was a lot closer to real-life modern nerdom than the hackneyed stereotypes in something like The Big Bang Theory.

Regarding Dr. Curt Connors/The Lizard. Yep, it's the same Dr. Connors from Spider-Man 2 and 3 from the Raimi Trilogy. My understanding is that had Spider-Man 3 been more successful both financially and critically, then Sony would have green-lit a Spider-Man 4, with Dr. Connors becoming The Lizard at last. Him having been teased for two films with his missing arm. That didn't happen. They went for a reboot instead, but having Lizard as a villain was still an idea. Also, "blasters". Ahem, they're called Web Shooters. /nerd

Gwen's father also died in the comics, but with the difference that Gwen didn't know Peter was Spider-Man. So, she blamed Spidey for his death, while at the same time dating Peter, who blamed himself and couldn't admit to her that he was Spider-Man. Something like that, if you simplify it. Gwen in TASM movies is more of a complex and modern female character, which is really cool. Flash in the comics was also an important part of Peter's high school and college days (especially in the Ultimate runs). He changed throughout the narrative, transforming from a bully to one of Peter's close friends, and he was indeed one of Spidey's biggest fans. So in this case this movie is 100% canon. It's a shame that there's very little of Flash Tompson in the second movie. Also Dr. Connors has a wife and young son in the comics, but those scenes were cut from the movie. And initially the Lizard didn't have a split personality, it was more like a drug addiction to a serum that gives him back his hand, an obsession with transforming people into a new race and deep mental health issues, rather than a little cartoonish Jekyll and Hyde kinda stuff, which has repeated from film to film for many Spider-Man villains. It was more a movie about parent-child relationships (Gwen and her father; Peter and his missing parents, replaced by his uncle and aunt; Connors and his son; the crane operator and his son, whom Spidey saves on the bridge, after which he refuses to avenge his uncle and starts just saving people). The filmmakers also needed to create a version that was different from Raimi's trilogy, and so they went for the story of Peter's parents, which wasn't the best decision overall, but I'll talk about that after the reaction to the 2nd movie comes out. Also, in the 2nd movie Peter has a different suit to replace the old one. New Andrew's suit is probably the most comic accurate of them all, apart from the logos on the chest and back. Peter began wearing the new Spider-Man suit which he and Gwen had designed together. Gwen suggested that Peter designed a new suit that would make more of an impact in the photos that Peter agreed to take of Spider-Man for the Daily Bugle. That info comes from "The Amazing Spider-Man Cinematic Infinite Comic" that takes place in between The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The best part of the new costume for me is the lenses on the mask, and Andrew's acting didn't require moving CGI eyes to express emotion, his body language and voicing say it all. And it looks awesome IRL, check out Comic-Con 2013, where Garfield appeared briefly in a new look. I always liked the way Andrew portrayed Peter Parker and especially Spider-Man. The way he rescued the kid from the car, while talking to him and taking off his mask is 100% the way Peter Parker would do it. Yes, Andrew is less awkward and dorky, but in the comics, the Peter-Awkward-Dork-Parker part isn't that long, after which he grows up and becomes the most famous and cool version of Spider-Man. And Andrew is more in line with that version of Spidey of all the actors who have played him so far. If you take Andrew in isolation from the movies, he's the perfect Spidey. He is 5 ft 10½ in (179 cm) tall and weighs 163 lbs (74 kg). Which is very close to Peter from the comics (5 ft 10 in (178 cm) and 167 lbs (76 kg)). In this movie he uses Oscorp’s cartridges for his web shooters, but later he makes his own web in the lab every once in a while. Also, about Spidey sticking to the walls through the soles of his shoes. It's kind of a slippery subject, so to speak :) because the mechanism for this superpower of Peter's in the comics is not spikes on his fingers, like Tobey's in the Raimi trilogy. It's more like magic, don't think about it too long, he can just make himself stick and stick out. He can manipulate the physical forces of attraction between the atoms of his body, in short. Andrew’s vigilante suit is just his usual clothes, some beanie, a face mask, and sunglasses. He can see through them at night because it's enough light for his sensitive eyes. For me personally Andrew is the coolest Spider-Man ever, too bad his second movie's script kind of sucks 'cause of Sony interference. He does the right things, but he also does the wrong things and sometimes acts like an asshole to people. But he has his reasons for that. First, he's young and stupid, so he becomes a bully because the world was a bully to him, just like in the comics. He forgets about Aunt May and stuff, so he has a character arc and proper development. He gets Gwen's attention because he stands up for the guy in the beginning, and that's before he gets the powers. However, he is no saint, and he has no problem stealing someone else's badge to get into Oscorp. It is only when he rescues a kid from a car on the bridge and sees father and son reunited, something Peter has always dreamed of, only then does he truly become Spider-Man. He made the mistake of creating the Lizard and paid for it with Captain Stacy's life. He makes mistakes, and suffers the consequences, but he always gets in the way of righting his wrongs, wow, that's what Spider-Man is known for. But he's no Tobey Maguire, so a lot of people don't like him. Although the movies script suffers from Sony's intentions to make a franchise and sell more toys, Andrew's version has that very grain of Peter Parker's character. And this version shows sides of the character that the other versions didn't show, and vice versa, and that's wonderful. Many accused Andrew of being too cool for Peter, which is understandable. The problem is that after Raimi's version, everyone started thinking that Peter is necessarily a shy guy and kind of a loser. And while this is true, it's much more important that Peter is an outsider and a loner most of the time, with a skateboard or not, it doesn't matter. If in the comics he wasn't a photographer but was a skateboarder, and in the movie he suddenly became a photographer, everyone would blame him for that, I suppose. People get too hung up on little things. Don't get me wrong, I adore every version of Spidey in the movies, each for something different. But I'm offended that so many people don't give Andrew the credit he deserves because of Baby Duck Syndrome and Raimi's trilogy.

It's interesting that you saw him as being a dick when most see Tobey's as being written as an even bigger dick. Both adaptations find it hard to show Peter failing to be present as Peter because he's busy being spider-man. They just end up making him a dick most of the time.

I still contend that Andrew Garfield is easily the best actor to play the role of Spiderman. Also the most enthusiastic given his real love for the source material. The age was an issue, but it was an issue with Tobey Maguire as well. Sadly, the script writing wasn't quite up to snuff for these films. The first is certainly better than the second though. Nat, if you haven't seen it yet, I STRONGLY recommend you watch Tick Tick Boom on Netflix at some point. Garfield is absolutely amazing in it. Also would strongly recommend The Social Network at some point. Would love to see a reaction to either of those in the future. Garfield is a pretty stunning talent. Would just once like to see a musical reaction, but I'm sure you wouldn't be able to monetize it on YouTube. Maybe a Patreon only thing? One can dream. :)

The ride is called "The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man". It's still probably one of the most innovative and immersive 3-D dark rides in existence, and other than updating the visuals, it's still the exact same ride it was 22 years ago. It was WAY ahead of it's time.

The reason I can't stand the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies is because it's really hard to root for a guy who spends the whole movie being a dick to everyone. And on top of that he puts out SOOO many red flags including very clearly being a stalker and instead of thinking he might be a bit of a creep or something Gwen's all into him for some reason.

I'm not sure if anyone has already mentioned it, within the comments - but I thought it was cool that you mentioned the sewer system as a great set and being great for a theme park ride. YEARS ago - Universal Florida opened (within their "Islands of Adventure" theme park, a "Marvel land" with (to me) the "only" interactice, 3-D thrill ride - I think it's called "The Amazing Spiderman" (but I'm sure someone will correct me - or I could have just GOOGLED it, to be certain. Anyway - you sit in a ride seat/ car that can swivel and tilt in multiple angles and you wear 3-D glasses and basically get pulled into multiple action scenes - including a sewer. As you spin around, if you say, fall into the sewer tunnel, they spray a mist of water - or if a villain shoots a weapon, you feel a blast of heat - it's incredible. Nothing (to me) has come close to that ride. I think The Mummy (also in Universal) employs the same technology. I just wish more "thrill rides" had that immersive, thrilling effect. I mean, when you were "falling" in that ride, you really felt like you were falling in the car/ seat! "A-mazing" (to be a corn-ball)! ;D

This movie was so much more fun than I remember it being. I remember being excited that this movie was coming out but never being able to go see it. Years later after the 2nd one came out I finally did see it but it was only once. There is so much discourse on people's favorite Spider-man and which one is more faithful or the "best" and honestly, when you just watch them for what they are you enjoy it so much more. The wildly different portrayals of Spider-man/Peter Parker makes it that much more incredible and I feel like this movie helped me see just how much I've been missing out.

I remember feeling very neutral about this movie when I saw it the first time. I do enjoy how they have Garfield behave and speak while he is spider-man (not peter parker) it really reminds me of the cartoons I watched as a kid with the sassy remarks and quick wit.

Yeah, about this movie, it's really a product of its era. Nolan's Batman permeated everyone's mind and it felt like they tried to give this Spider-Man they wanted to add a tint of dark and gritty vibes to it, mixed with a tiny pinch of Twilight. The suit has to be the worst out of all the movie adaptations too, that made a lot of fans straight up hate it (although the one in TASM2 has to be my favourite one). Also, as you said, Andrew Garfield doesn't work as Peter Parker, he's too cool for it. He's awesome at Spider-Man though. Besides that, the chemistry is real between him and Emma Stone (i don't know if they were together before or they started dating after, but you definitely can see why, it's a magical thing that happens between actors and actresses that play Peter Parker and his love interest)

Yeah... that's the main flaw. Venom should not directly be related to "funny and hilarious". They saw Deadpool do amazing with humor and just went for the same route, but lowering the humor quality to 2nd grade level jokes and a Venom that only looks like Venom and acts nothing like him. It worked wonders with Deadpool because it's faithful to the character, but not for Venom. An even bigger let down for Venom fans than the one from Spider-Man 3 tbh. Not even Tom Hady's acting (which is on point for what they are looking for) make them worth watching IMHO.

Please add Gotham to tv polls, it ran for 5 seasons and it's about Bruce Wayne as a child before he became Batman, the show also creates their own origin stories for Batman's enemies like the Joker, Scarecrow, Bane etc. It was a fantastic show and if you liked the Dark Knight trilogy movies you'll love this show.

I always felt Garfield's Spider-man was a psycho. If you watch the film as if you had no idea who or what Spider-man was, he's a mad man who beats up random blonde dudes and stalks a girl til she falls for him. Then for some reason randomly decided to fight a giant lizard and be a "hero."
