Alicent whole speech to Rhaenys, she must have lost her mind. Its been proven over and over again she cant control or guide her son. Shes delusional.

Just when I thought I could tolerate Alicent she goes and thinks his last words are about her dumbass son. The irony is that Alicent all along feared people coming for her children the LITERAL first thing that happens when the king dies is Rhaenyras entire family planned to be murdered. Cole the most jilted lover of all jilted lovers. Its basically little finger but dumb and emotional instead of scheming.

Drogo's funeral pyre was a unique event, from the words of GRR Martin himself - an event steeped in magic, Which is supported by the books - in Dance of Dragons Daenerys has her hair burned away and is covered in minor burns from her time with Drogon in the Dothraki Sea. Some Targaryens believed themselves to be immune. And were always proven wrong, fatally.

She gives her reasons - she didn't want to start the war. She didn't want to kinslay. She just wanted to be left alone, and this big display of power was her gambit. Its not poor writing at all but an excellent character showpiece - she's a fearsome warrior but not a monster. The only reason those people died was because they were forced into a dangerous place to stroke the ego of the new king - there was no other way out of the Dragonpit, the exits to the tunnels were sealed. So she ordered her dragon to break out, unfortunately trambled hundreds of people, intimidated those who imprisoned and threatened her and left. THAT is agency. You might not agree with it, but that's what agency is!

Was probably noted already, but that wasn't the Sept - that was the Dragonpit. Its the largest structure in King's Landing, the only place they could hold such a huge ceremony with thousands of witnesses. And its also another sign of Targaryen power along with the Crown of the Conqueror, Blackfyre and the dagger. As many symbols of legitimacy as possible to cover up the fact that Aegon II is a usurper and a pretender to the crown.

Kinslaying is exactly why Rhaenys didn't just torch the Greens there on the platform. She'd be killing her nieces and nephews. Modern audiences don't seem to truly grasp how much of a taboo this is. I've seen so many people complaining about this poor "character moment" or saying how GRRM wouldn't have written that, even though he's intimately involved in the whole series (so far), that I want to tear my hair out in frustration.

Kinslaying in Westoros is looked at worse than murder or any other crime...In fact they believe the result in killing your kin can be a curse on your whole family..I am sure that also is a factor as to why she didn't kill them

Yeah, this series is a chronicle of the Dance of The Dragons, considering you already posted the whole series, it's safe to say I could post something without it being spoiler. Hopefully anyone who's watching this for the first time is not watching a reaction to the actual episodes instead of watching the actual episodes lol but the Targaryen civil war is only a few years and after that there is a situation called the Blackfyre rebellions, And then there's Robert's rebellion which is immediately before we're Game of Thrones picked up at, And that's what drove Daenerys and her brother to go into hiding because Robert was looking to finish off all the Targaryens because the woman he was in love with was creating an element of the song of ice and Fire (Jon Snow) ... But with House of the Dragon, they're actually looking to make it an anthology following all aspects of Targaryen history such as Aegon's conquest, the Dance of the Dragons and possibly the Blackfyre rebellions (which is an uprising of Targaryen bastards to take the throne).😁

Gotta love how Otto is doing EVERYTHING he swore Rhaenyra would do to Alicent & her family. "Listen to me, daughter. The king will die. If Rhaenyra succeeds him, war will follow." No Otto, usurping the Throne has caused war to follow. If it was for the good of the Realm, him nor Alicent can really believe Aegon is the best choice for their king. It's about power, nothing else.

In the books he's 52 at this point. In the show, he was 17 when he got married so at least 18 when Rhaenyra was born, she's 14 when the show starts then there are time jumps of 3 years, about 13 years (Aegon ages from 3 to 16), and 6 years. So that's 18 + 14 + 3 + 13 + 6 = 54. Plus another year or so for the cumulative months of other time jumps = 55.

Not only that, Viserys in this show holding his hand over fire for over ten seconds with no damage or pain. In the shows, the targs are resistant to some degree.

I was just watching a video about how that scene was added by the writers, not part of GRRMs story. That does make me feel a little better that GRRM didn't fuck that up, but still, if the writing team wanted a big moment with her coming up through the floor like a bad ass, have her try to takeout the Greens and have them flee before her dragon can breath on them. She can still toast a bunch of minor characters we'll never see again anyway and the important ones to the story can get behind stuff to keep from being cooked or run down hallways, but don't have her make bad decisions. She's a smart woman. Keep her that way.

Because Game of Thrones had the line "fire cannot kill a dragon" and then had their dragon-adjacent character not die to fire half a dozen times. So the show was completely implying through its established cinematic language that "true" Targaryens are fire-proof. The only reason you think it's obvious that they aren't is you read the books or watched some third party media about why they're not fire proof.

Lol I can see you're really into the "strong women" characters Essero, but I'm afraid the strong woman character is a tricky thing to get right that a lot of writers cannot do in a realistic way, even female writers have struggled at times to come up with a really likeable "strong woman" character, I believe it was Sara Hess that wrote the ending scene for this episode where I agree I lost a lot of respect for Rhaenys.

I think it's a confusing thing for a lot of people they instantly think they are fireproof because of Daenerys, but they also forget that she was the queen of dragons and that is why she was effectively fireproof.

To me the book lore is the real lore and no Targaryen is fireproof in the books, and there are records of pure blooded targs having died by fire. GRRM has stated that even Dany isn't fireproof all the time, it was only the magical event of Drogo's funeral/the hatching of the dragons during which the flames did not burn her.

You know, at first I was annoyed that she busted in like that, but after watching again i've decided I would do the same in her shoes. She and Melys are trapped, and by luck Aegon is being crowned in the Dragonpit. No Dragonkeepers will help her get Melys out the normal secure way, so she decides she's just busting the fuck out and accepting the collateral. In this world, in her position, I'd do the same damn thing.

The series is filled with moments where if characters had made more intelligent decisions or acted with the full ability of their power the war just wouldn't have happened. It's one of the biggest things I don't like about the show - it presents so many off-ramps and then the characters just fumble the ball repeatedly.

No I agree with you - no chance Daemon would ever bend the knee. I agree that all in all it was a poor writing decision I just disagree with the people who claim it’s on the same level of GoT season 8 and that it completely ruins the show or completely ruins Rhaenys’ character. I think overall it’s been very overblown by the fandom.

Well then episode 10 must break character with Damon then because there was no one in any of these episodes that thought Damon would bend the knee. So if the next episode has Damon going "Well, maybe it would be better to just be the lord and lady of Dragonstone." Then it better 100% be a ploy to get his loyalists in the city watch to take out all those loyal to Aegon because Damon isn't giving up on controlling Westeros.

I mostly agree with you here and definitely agree that a quiet escape would have been better. However, episode 10 does clearly show that there was a chance a war wouldn't have resulted. Rhaenyra says herself that if war was to begin it would not be by her hand. Rhaenys also directly addresses it when she says "A war is sure to be fought over this treachery, but that war is not mine to begin". So she does show that she has thought about it and does believe they will likely go to war but she would rather leave that decision up to the Queen rather than force the Queen's hand herself. I do think the writers put in the legwork to justify the scene (at least much more than D&D ever did to justify their ridiculous decisions) but I also think the whole thing would have played out much better and made more sense if they just didn't put Rhaenys in that position in the first place.

She also talks about the threads of green and threads of black in episode 7. I also felt like the beast beneath the boards can refer to many things. There are things to come, but there's also all the rats that are about and even when Arryk pulled Aegon from under the candles. Pulling a beast from within. Obviously, it's mainly the dragon, but there are a a few beasts beneath boards in this series.

Just for clarification on the timescale. The Great Council in Episode 1 takes place 101 years after Aegon Targaryen conquers Westeros. We're now up to the year 129 AC. Robert's Rebellion ends in 282 AC and the show starts in 298 AC with the death of Jon Arryn. If you remember the 3 Eyed Raven from Game of Thrones, we've met his grandfather in this show, who is the same person as Maester Aemon's dad's, dad's, dad. (Yes, 3 Eyed Raven had a bit of Targaryen in him.) House of the Dragon still has a lot of material to get through, as it relates to Fire and Blood, the book it's based on. We're still a lot of generations away from Dany. Hope that makes sense for you without being massively spoilery.

I didn't like the dragon scene. Rhaenys was a highly intelligent character before this scene whom was one of the few to be able to think several moves ahead. She's not so stupid to think that her Granddaughters will stay out of the war when one has a dragon, are now married to the enemies of the crown and direct daughters of Damon, whom no one thinks will bend the knee. Rhaenys HAS to know that her grandchildren are going to war. She should have just taken out all the opposition right there and she should have known that. If they wanted her to stay consistent, she should have just sneaked out of there with her dragon and flown away. But anyway, it's a great way to throw away a strong female character's agency for a spectacle cause you haven't had anything really exciting happen in a few minutes.

Viserys' daughter Helaena speaks in prophecies. Earlier when Aemond talked about wanting to have a dragon, she said 'He'll have to close an eye'. And then soon after he traded his eye for a dragon. This episode she says there's a beast beneath the boards and then Rhaeynys bursts through the dragon pit. Hopefully we get more cryptic and prophetic sayings from her!
