There was some okay character development in Season 2. For one thing, I think Mako and Bolin are more interesting in that season. The big problem is that Team Avatar isn't that important to the main plotline, especially after the two Beginnings episodes. It's kind of lame that Mako, Bolin and especially Asami were made into secondary characters, which never would have happened to Aang's gang.

I think the Grandma’s reverence of the objectively evil Earth Queen is a funny reference to a lot of real life UK grans who have a similar blind devotion to our monarchy, complete with framed pictures of the queen in pride of place 😭

So the rings of Ba Sing Se have always been separated by class, this was true in ALTA as well. But it has certainly gotten more explicit, especially since the Earth Queen is openly malicious and evil, whereas the Earth King was just a figurehead kept in the dark. Keep in mind though, the outcomes of both are the same: the subjugation and separation of the common people. It's an important theme for this season. Can't wait for you to see the next couple episodes!

I think the reason for the airbender abductions is not because they're different, but because they're strong. Nobody knows how to fight airbenders, having an army regiment of them is insanely valuable

Hope you’re starting to see why everyone already liked this over book 2. Not to knock too hard on book 2, but the character stuff was mostly about Korra and Tenzin, leaving Mako and the others kind of out of it. This season finally continues plot threads from book 1 that kinda seemed forgotten in book 2. Like Mako’s connection to his scarf, growing up poor & having touching character moments. Whereas book 2 was mostly stuff just about the overall plot of the season and not character related at all. Also I’m highly convinced Ba Sing Se is just an allegory for North Korea. Even hanging a picture of your leader in your house and praying over it is VERY North Korean.
