We a murder mystery now fellas.

Adrian Gorgey

That's true, but it'd be a murder-suicide if anything. Sentient lichen may do well in a cave, but unless it chose its timing exceptionally well, it would be exposed and vulnerable. No mobility and limited senses. Can you burn down your house? Absolutely, yes. Would you ever want to? Maybe for the insurance money, or if you found a spider in the attic. But otherwise, it's in its own self-interest to keep him alive. Which is a big part of why Eight trusts the usheili as much as he does at the moment. Moving past a trust based on mutual self-interest into a genuine bond of trust will be Eight's challenge. I just hope that he can communicate to the usheili that his wariness is not its fault, but something that he needs to work on in himself. Although in this case it'd be less like burning down your house, and more like chopping off your legs and poking out your eyes. And also your main source of food. Just, all around not in its interest lol.

Yes, that's right. And the relationship's dynamic is further skewed, because the uekisheile has the power to kill Eight at any time.

Hmmm... An enigma in a mystery. I think Dog's Agility was a good choice. He'll learn a lot of them eventually, but for now, being faster is a matter of life and death. Even with a sharper spear, if you can't hit your opponent, then it doesn't matter. I also like this spat between him and the usheili. It's hard enough having a roommate. Sharing a body would be even tougher. In the end, it all comes down to trust. Eight's experience is a huge advantage to him, but it comes with its own limitations. Because he's suffered, he's slower to trust and more skeptical of people's intentions. At least that much is normal for someone who's lived long enough. On the other hand, the usheili is like a newborn baby. Even if it develops quickly, it's never been betrayed. It hasn't suffered, and so its wisdom is limited. In other ways, however, that complete lack of suffering and experience gives it a wisdom of its own. An innocence. Innocence is a type of wisdom, too. In the end, the best way for them to come to a shared trust and understanding is for them to overcome obstacles together. I'm imagining a rather dramatic scene where Eight is on the brink of death, and the usheili takes control to save his life. That would finally be enough for him realize that a lack of control isn't always a bad thing. On another note, I like the little expressions you throw in there, like "he thinks his teeth are harder than rocks." That makes the culture and world feel much bigger.
