I just finished the Space books. They were a lot of fun. I particularly liked the idea of this future as being a choice between not particularly good choices. I could see why the Imperium's loyalists regard it as the best option, but could also see why for Jason it wasn't good enough. I also appreciated how the later books appreciated that there are reasons for non-fraternization rules. It did leave me with a question. I understand that this stand-alone book is set some time after the end of the Space Trilogy. Did the war between the Imperium and the Alliance happen, or are they still preparing to attack? For another possibility, the Imperium could have conducted a limited reprisal, say attacking the planet that holds the headquarters of the Alliance Special Operations Group. That way, the Imperium could take its revenge without having to start Interstellar War X to do so.

Again, this is to avoid non-military considerations from getting intertwined with military decisions. Even if nothing is going on, the appearance of impropriety can cause problems. There may be nothing going on between Private Smith and the Commander, but the effects are almost as bad if enough of the unit thinks something is going on. In short, I can easily believe the Shil'vati military doesn't care that much about what the troops are doing with each other. However, anybody in a position of authority had better not be in a relationship with another unit member, especially a subordinate. It wrecks unit cohesion and that is why they should have regulations to make it clear that that kind of behavior is not acceptable.
