I think it's a little disappointing that Juliette isn't sharing everything she knows with the group. There is clearly something going on with the whole emissary and god thing. Plus Juliette seems to be immortal cause even if she lost her body, her power (aura) can transfer to other people. Which it's already been established that her mind is contained in her power and not her body. She's only been sharing with the group the stuff she has figured out already and hasn't sought their help in figuring out her current thoughts/info.

It's chaos theory. The system is deterministic, meaning if I say A, it's predictable that B will always happen. But despite it being a deterministic system, it's impossible to predict things in the long term since it's highly sensitive to initial conditions, and it is a nonlinear system (variables affect each other disproportionately, like in the 3 body problem). Basically what I'm trying to say, from our current understanding of math and physics, it's impossible for Emily to accurately predict the long term future.

“I have a waffle. It's okay.” This is low key peak humor right here.

This is very Worm inspired

Very true. Going to meet up with Juliette meant going into a soon to be incursion zone. Clearly an extremely high risk but it is unlikely that our cool group of protagonists and Peter (sorry not sorry, dude) would have all come out of this without it. Now it's just about calculating what risk to take. It would be interesting if they could find another person with a different type of information power to make more sense of these death predictions

Glitter Rabbit (C)

Rereading the first few chapters on RR after actually learning what Emily's powers are is even more uncomfortable. Like, when Julietta concludes that Emily must have a power, she denies it several times, meaning she must have seen either long term or short term death....loads of possible speculations

Marquess

It's also that she always goes with the safest option. With lives on the line, she doesn't dare risk seeing if one of the worse options might instead give her a chance for an even better one.

CobaltStellite6

I don't think Emily has lost the possibility to take the path leading to people not dying in three years, only that she caught a glimpse of it and can't find it again. The window of that possibility may simply be very small : imagine being in a large, completely dark room, but there is one specific angle and direction where you can see a pinprick of light. Look a little to the left, or move a little to the right, and you can't see it anymore.

Manlor

That's true. But the second path could still be the one taking her to a 100% survival path. Otherwise, the implication would be that she has always taken the highest rated path, that there has never been two scenarios with the same %, and that ods can only go down and never up. Because if ods can go up, then it doesn't matter if she take a suboptimal choice. I think where her power would be useful is with short term information gathering. Take for example if she was leading troops. She could ask "What would happen if I make the rifle squad go through that abandoned mall? They all die? Must be an ambush point. Let's call an artillery strike on it." Or she could ask what are the best ods for a squad to go into X street or direction. In short? She would be an awesome commander. But she is a awful seer.

Sindri

Her view of probabilities seems pretty vague. I get the impression that she can feel the difference between 'almost certainly dying in five minutes' and 'maybe dying in five minutes' but if one path gave her a 60% chance of dying in one year and a 40% chance of living for ten, and another path gave her an 80% chance of dying in two years and a 20% chance of living for three, I think the second path would look safer. I'm guessing her god had to specifically intervene to show her that the route that *probably* killed her in two days instead of three years was the only route that gave her any chance of making it to her 22nd birthday.

Sindri

So, In-Joke is pretty clearly not in charge here. (Or they're plural and the one fronting was not the highest authority.) My guess is, they were confident that they could pull off this recruitment no matter how dickish they looked while doing it, but failed to account for Julietta's extremely low bullshit tolerance. Now they're afraid of the consequences of failing, but not half as scared as they are of the consequences of pushing harder, presumably because you can't threaten your god's favoritest Host lightly. (It's possible that threats are not their usual way of doing things and if Emily responded to any other form of persuasion they would never have done anything to frighten her, but if they were just bluffing and not willing to follow through her power wouldn't react to it, so they absolutely were going to murder her if she hesitated to do what they wanted, every day for a year, so they get no sympathy.) Emily's power makes several things very clear, and several other things very opaque. Like, why did flirting with her sister increase her estimated lifespan? Like I can see how flirting with Christine would increase everybody's probability of making it out of Chicago, but... ...Should I be worried that Julietta seems like a really straightforward person to me? Nah probably not worth digging into. Edit: can't believe I didn't spot it earlier. These people were watching Emily for years, they know she only does what increases her own chance of survival, and they saw her go back into an Incursion. That's proof positive that one or more of the four people that Emily brought out of there is going to be absolutely vital. That's why In-Joke couldn't actually threaten any of them; they have no idea what these kids needs to do, just that the kids need to do it or everybody is fucked, so they can't interfere too much.

I love this story so much. A new chapter is more often than not the highlight of my week. Thanks Thundamoo, you are great!

Vincebourgh

In the first version Peter died after he fled. His role in the training camp was filled instead by one of Lia's ex-boyfriends. So maybe the one-dimensional douche energy is an aftertaste from reading about that guy?

Manlor

She is using her death divination power wrong. Going on a path that lower your lifespan from 3 years to 2 doesn't mean the very next choice in the 2 years path won't be one that takes her on a 4 years path, for example.

mike

Yeah, I didn't read the first version of this story so I was really surprised with how much people were disliking Peter. He seems very smug teenager but he hasn't really given me bad guy vibes or doesn't care about his friends vibes. (I really can't blame him for running away when the car crashed if he didn't know he was gonna get powered up) But then again this is a Thunda story so thats liable to change lol

Anna

> I have to make sure that I'm never a burden to anyone, no matter how small. ah yes, a perfectly normal thing to want and definitely not an indication someone desperately needs therapy.

Kennyevilmonkey

Perfect setup with the gift card joke. I knew it wouldn't have more than a couple dollars on it when Commander pulled it out of her wallet.

Vincebourgh

You know what? I would really like a chapter or part of one from a rando's perspective (maybe a soldier). Seeing Julietta's manerisms, powers and ticks from the outside would be funny, somewhat creepy and awesome I feel

Vincebourgh

I knew Peter couldn't just be an annoying smartass. That was actually cute how he bantered and played with Ana.

Lako

Thanks for the chapter!

I feel like a few of Julietta’s own flaws were worked quite heavily into that last “to do” list. Hopefully she finds the time to trust and rely on people more. And damn; In-Joke is an asshole. Poor Emily.

Ketzer2314

i dont think emily power is that simple. i mean its more like she reads the vectors of the entire universe to the point where the vectors end. and well she has no training in her power. its like casting level 1 fireball over and over. maby with enough training and stuff she could change reality itself. i mean every power in the story so far is based in absolute physicality. well maria is a strange one to be honest (changing the stage of energy to become Matter) but the rest? peter partly phases out of reality, christine assambles and disasmbels stuff (wow what a potential... i mena she could split atoms and make matter that dosnt exist yet), anastasia moves her own blood and even the blood of julietta if she goes ana mode, and julietta freely moves, assambles, disasambles organic matter (and with that process create inorganic matter she makes her crystal blades). i have not seen anything esoteric in the story so far.

Ketzer2314

poor Emily.... she avoidet to be a slave to the military and insted she is a slave to her own powers. i mean.. is she even a person anymore? that moment wen she only answerd with "yes" felt more like its her power itself talking.

sebsebs

Thanks for the chapter and congrats for book one. Time to reread AYEH from the start! I didn't expect Emily's power to be that "simple" but it's certainly interesting. I don't think her strategy really makes sense because she's so desperately chasing after scraps of lifespan that she's not committing to any one path ; I guess that's why In-Joke has so much disdain for her. If you think about classic stories with heroes that save the world, they'd definitely have a very short lifespan until and unless they manage to defeat the dangerous world threat (a very risky endeavour) after which they could live happily ever after. I'm guessing In-Joke can see potential futures/timelines simultaneously? Somewhat like Harbinger or the one that finds a path to victory in Worm? Purely informational but still strong enough to defeat a lot of people when used properly. I wonder if the Defenders of Nothing are actually working with aliens, like defending the Queen/god/maybe egg(?) of Nothing that gave Julietta her power. Maybe the reason they have no goal as an organization is to stay faithful to Nothing - leaving every possibility open without constraining themselves to any one goal except for that freedom itself. In that case, Emily and Julietta opposing them and forming genuine bonds with other people would be like confronting their own flaws and dark sides in a way, which is really nice from a storytelling pov! I really love this story and I'm looking forward to what comes next. Thanks again :)

Nait02

I feel like Julietta should maybe share a few more things she knows about the Aliens... though I guess that conversation was packed enough

"I have to make sure that I'm never a burden to anyone, no matter how small." Yeah, i know this one, and out of everything on her list, only this one's impossible. And Relationships end up horribly one sided if you take up all the slack.

Lucy Severine

Hehehehe. That was great. I've had a really great time with this story so far 💜
