Foxner

Lying about aliens not being people is actually annoying me. The only way to end the war and the suffering of both people's is through communication, and Julietta is refusing to let it be known there is a possibility of communication. She keeps trying to do everything by her self too, which she really needs to learn that it's impossible and that all shes doing is allowing more unnecessary harm being done to everyone (mainly due to withholding information and refusing communication). It makes her look hypocritical for trying to be the sole person solving the apocalypse problem and trying to prevent the countless unnecessary human and alien deaths.

Foxner

That was super suspicious

DireGoat

Probably but would it be a toxin that's cheaper and more effective than mustard gas or any one of a dozen other chemical weapons? No it wouldn't beat those.

Julia Niles

This chapter is amazing thanks

Elayda

On the topic of alien anesthetics, couldn’t a failed design for one easily end up being a lethal airborne toxin for the aliens?

AntiClimax she her

I don't think physical pain is the issue here.

Natalie Maher

She'll be fine. Julietta has plenty of options for providing her own anesthetic.

Gabriel Melnik

No that's wrong because she was called the Daughter of nothing. It seems like the real Juliette is dead, and the entity that possessed her put that consciousness at the driver seat. I'd wager that the god of nothing is the strongest but he is just laying idle in bliss just as Juliette did in the fish tank.

Gabriel Melnik

Her swaps brain and the identity crisis they cause. If the medics deem that personality and identity is clinically defined by the brain, and she swaps them as if they were CDs then she would confirm their doubts.

Lucy Severine

^^ I know we're all used to the Thundamoo misery train at times but, I'd really like to avoid this particular instance :/

AntiClimax she her

Is the chapter title a reference to Hogan's Heroes? I can't help but hear it in my head as if Sergeant Schultz is speaking.

AntiClimax she her

I agree that the researcher feels off, somehow. We don't currently have any evidence that he does, though. Julietta was able to scan him without any domain interference, and presumably she'd have mentioned it if she felt one. Of course, he may have a knowledge power he is able to suppress the domain of which almost completely without losing the ability, similar to Emily.

AntiClimax she her

Except that it's not safe and painless to let herself be dehumanized like that, even if she thinks she can deal with it. And she's constantly shifting unconsciously. Any info they get from her would be suspect, even if she does manage to hold the form without constantly fixing it or shifting parts to other things. I'm seriously hoping that he was making a joke at her expense because he noticed how distracted she was.

extantCadence

It's important to remember that "Queen" is a designation assigned by humans, and Julietta is just trying to translate, as best she can, communication that doesn't involve spoken language (and at least sometimes not even words). We know very little about them at all. They could be the gods in question, they could just be their champions. And we don't know exactly what death means to them.

da-re

"I wonder what a silent scream smells like." "Absolutely wonderful!" "I'm so painfully ignorant." "You are indeed!" I may be reading in to it to much but the responses from the doctor here feel off. Like based off the conversation their having these responses make sense. But they are also placed in a way that makes it seem like they are replies to Juliette's thoughts and not the actual conversation. Do we know if the doctor has powers?

Vic

They probably assume, quite accurately, that she can simply turn off her nerve endings. It's weird and conceptually uncomfortable, but it can be entirely safe and painless for her, and when trying to learn how to kill something? Vivisection is very very useful

Marquess

Suddenly, the way the child protocols work makes a lot more sense. Children aren’t outliers, they’re a high-risk group, and WILL get powers.

Marquess

It might not be a queen at all. Early on, it was shown that whatever was in the moon was already dead. It COULD be a queen, but none of them have been shown to be that big so far. My guess is that it’s a dead god, possibly one of the conquered ones. Though they still seems to be making champions, and they probably have to be alive for that.

Lucy Severine

Annoyed by the idea of imminent vivisection tbh. Feels like unnecessary torture porn in this instance when Juliet clearly has way more value in other uses here. And frankly I *don't* think it will bring remarkably more information

Simca

Given that, as best we know, autism's underlying cause is atypical quantities of sensory information during developmental periods and that having all of your skin burned off by acid is going to result in atypical quantities of 'touch' information, it's not an entirely unreasonable diagnosis. It's also not particularly helpful, though, even less than an autism diagnosis usually is, since her case is very unique. It's sort of like arguing that anyone with a disability that impacts the senses is autistic to some degree.

Klakkers

She shifted the MRI fluit out of her body during the scan

Sindri

@Webwoven If the only minorities who were more likely to get powers were the ones who were discriminated against, you'd have a point. But "being above average at sports" is just as likely to get you powers as being part of an oppressed group. Wearing brightly colored clothes on incursion day is as likely to get you powers as a physical disability. Whatever the selection criteria is, it's not looking for traumatized people or ostracized people or resentful people, it's just looking for people who deviate from the norm in some way. So, trying to add more trauma doesn't increase the chance of somebody getting powers any more than idolizing them does... but it does increase the chance of people who do have powers being uncooperative at best, and likely actively hostile toward your authority.

sharikak 54

Remind me what happened when Julietta was put into the MRI? What exactly was she trying to hide?

Kennyevilmonkey

It's a CRUSADE! Deus Volt!

Flying Goat

Could she just grow an entire alien as an appendage, and cut off the nervous system? Or use human options to deal with the pain for the rest of her?

extantCadence

So. That queen in the moon. The one that all empowered humans feel the pull of. It sounds like it must have... some relevance... Well, this raptor is pretty much just a small fry and a zealot, but there must be some truth to glean here.

BrilliantDawn

Mmm, juicy juicy info. Gonna be thinking of whose power is what god from now on. I sense rereading in my future

pheonix89

It's a fucking alien religious war?!?!?

Tallerpie

I totally agree here with this "it's not something inherent, it's something to do with this phycology". I think it has to do with what Sindri said about specific people having specific gods. Based on what the Earth researchers have found (or at least what we've been told they've found), they know basically zero about these gods outside of them existing(?). I mean, Julietta has discovered they are an intelligent life form, where the military believes they aren't. I think the military is (at best) an incomplete or (at worst) a completely incorrect source of data. That being said, there's definitely something SPECIFIC about the person that is required for them to get powers. Our researcher friend (can't be asked to go look for his name while typing this comment) is basically guessing in the nature that gives people powers. He's got data telling a story, but he doesn't have the correct scope to understand the story being told. I'm guessing it has something to do with what Sindri said here about it being tied to the person (and what Julietta said about the "entity" getting some sort of choice in who they pick). Basically, the gods have some sort of criteria that allows for people to be selected, then selects based on people in that criteria? I'm glad I signed up for the Patreon cause this is the exact kinds of discussions I love about books like this.

Webwoven

> If the military is aware that minorities are more likely to get powers, that makes assigning a known raging transphobe as a drill instructor even stupider. I actually disagree. The question is: What *about* minorities makes them more likely to get powers? It's probably not something inherent to the very core of their psychology, given as the science is still out on whether or not there *is* a difference in psychology. It's much more likely that it's the lived experiences of oppression that give minorities the ability to develop powers more frequently. Therefore, you could (theoretically) make it more likely for a given minority group to develop powers by making a more discriminatory environment. Of course, then you have the problem of what they might *do* with those powers, but Commander doesn't seem to concerned on that front and it seems like she has good reasons for it.

Tallerpie

The "You aren't a spy, you're just autistic" bit had me CACKLING. What a way to start the day 😂😂 Thanks for the chapter!

Beeees!

Absolutely crazy chapter, turned out well but i can see how it might have been tricky. So much to ponder

Vincebourgh

Whewooo... I can imagine this type of chapter would be difficult to write. The different logic and communication system of the raptor. The revelations etc. It turned out great though!

Lako

Thanks for the chapter!

Acedia_of_sloth

Thank you for the chapter!

Sindri

If the military is aware that minorities are more likely to get powers, that makes assigning a known raging transphobe as a drill instructor even stupider. The human cult of Nothing suddenly seems significantly more dangerous if that's the god that ate all the other gods. So, Reciprocation is Ana's god. Division is Christine's. Peter is probably Perfection. I'm guessing Commander got picked by Biss. Possibility is the god of Warrant Officer Angelface. I'm guessing Cross Country is Contradiction, based on how his teleports feel? I dunno whether or not we've met anybody from Legion (maybe Maria), Blasphemy, Silhouette, or Failure. Shit, is Failure Emily's god? Are those ten the full list of devoured gods, or just some examples? It kind of sounds like the queens and their swarms are refugees, fleeing from Nothing. But that raises a big question: how did these specific aliens get to where they could be captured? Shouldn't every entry point to earth be controlled by a Queen and monitored by her Angels? Or did they not turn against their leaders until after they got to Earth? I think that the real deciding factor behind whether you tell the truth now should be whether the military is likely to ever learn the truth, and if they do what will be the consequences of being known to have lied about it? If the invaders are actually refugees from Nothing, that could mean that they've been *trying* to find some way to negotiate with the primitive native life forms, if only so they don't have to fight on multiple fronts at the same time. That... could be why the followers of Division were so determined to bring Christine back alive? The humans with powers are the ones who have been chosen as diplomats. And that would be why Julietta feels the urge to walk into the sea in order to meet her queen.

Ledabot

Holding my hands on my head as I realize that children are more likely to get powers. :(

Kennyevilmonkey

Ah, religion. That wonderful thing that has brought countless deaths and so much suffering since near the dawn of recorded time. Where would we be without you?
