She has blueprints for nervous systems. But actually, all she needs to do is figure out how to transfer enough energy to something to make it combust. The difference in ignition between black powder and thermite is the activation energy required.

This story is actually giving me a newfound distaste to people forcing nicknames or such stuff onto other people

Lol "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you..."

jthrr

"I obviously can't store food in here, I would just… eat it." Pretty sure a moment is coming where she realises she can just grow food from template — even fairly naturally, like an apple growing from a twiggy finger, a ham hock that's formed then intentionally altered to match the barbecue transformation... then she's going to be surprised that the squad absolutely does not want to eat it

I don't know if this works on most queens. Queens are intelligent so they should be able to shrink their domains to increase the density to overpower Julietta's domain if she stretches it to thin. The better bet might be a smaller denser body and domain that burrows through the queen constantly eating and regenerating. As long as the queen doesn't have self healing powers it should eventually kill them. Plus if the domain was denser in order to over power it the queen would likely have to shrink their domain to the point where it is no longer protecting their full body. That would let some likely very frustrated artillery men finally have some fun in this war. You could even keep a near constant bombardment going so the queen can't shrink her domain down enough without getting hurt.

Actually, is there anything stopping her from just eating a small apartment? Boarding up the windows to keep the trauma down? Maybe keeping a small portable generator in there too? There’s a lot of potential to kit out her flesh dimension.

Ledabot

Called it! Probably not alone lol. A taste of Queen will be acquired soon mwa ha ha

Now I'm wondering about the selection process for the other privates in the teams. My first impulse was that if this is supposed to be an elite strike force, you would want at least half the normal troops to be combat veterans so they can watch over your fresh baby supers, and I guess I know nothing about the other six guys here so that could be the case, but Jazz is definitely as green as can be, and Jimenez seems to have only done low-intensity stuff so far. But those two *are* the two (unpowered, enlisted) people that "Lia" has had the most positive interactions with so far. So now I'm thinking that the #1 factor that the military considers when building a team is psychological compatibility with their superhero. After all, you can't pick who gets powers, and most of them are going to deviate from the norm in some way, so you'll end up with a lot of capes who don't exactly fit the profile of the ideal soldier, and you have to use them anyway. The best way to salvage that situation is probably to do extensive psych profiles on all your other soldiers, and have some expert pick out the eight privates (or I guess seven privates and one corporal) who are most likely to get along well with their designated hero without getting too caught up in their nonsense, so they can act as an interface between the crazy kid with superpowers and the rest of the military structure. Which makes me want to see more of the squ-- fireteams assigned to Ana, and Christine. And now I'm thinking that the people in charge of the boot camp 100% knew that "Lia" was sneaking out to visit Christine, and not only declined to reprimand anybody involved but specifically marked down the person she asked to cover for her as a prime candidate. Whether getting sent directly to the front lines is a good thing for Jazz or not is yet to be determined.

But now I'm trying to think how supers would change the situation. And a lot of the time, one 'fireteam' will essentially be operating a single heavy weapon, because no individual human can carry enough stuff to be effective with an HGM or missile launcher solo. And if you've got one of the good heroes, instead of just a domain umbrella, they essentially *are* your heavy weapon. The sergeant gives the hero an assignment, and everybody else only exists to help them do it. And sure, you probably hit diminishing returns in efficiency when you give them each more than 3-4 normal troops, but human lives are cheap and supers are rare; if you can preserve one solid hero by sacrificing another six or seven privates that's a good deal. There's probably a completely different structure for the heroes that don't have very useful powers, so the normal riflemen are doing the real work again, but they can't be split up nearly as much because nobody can get too far away from their domain umbrella without dying. [edit: wrote this before your reply went up. I'm convinced that the organizational structure works. The terminology still feels weird, but nobody has ever accused the US military of using consistent or sensible terminology. Also, if you have a corporal do a sergeant's job you don't have to pay them as much, and if a sergeant fills a lieutenant's role you don't need to put nearly as many people through officer training school!]

While that is all true, anti-alien tactics use higher-headcount fire teams anyway because each fire team has been built around the assumption that they will be entrenching with multiple LMGs, letting other fire teams leapfrog ahead, and then packing up to move ahead themselves. This involves a lot more manpower than standard small unit tactics, and while keeping track of eight other men can be a bit of an ask for a corporal, it's mitigated by the relative simplicity of each man's job—it's not as hard to constantly keep the relative location of each member of your team in mind when you're almost always going to be moving in formation. In situations where small unit tactics are more optimal (breaching a house or other structure that may have aliens in it, for example) the LMGs are often going to be left behind outside with their gunners. The war has been going on for three decades! There has been a significant shift away from a lot of modern military doctrine, due to the abnormality of the enemy being fought. I've had the advantage of being able to consult with active servicemen about my silly little fiction regarding how the military might adjust its tactics for the current enemy, and while I'm not the biggest military nerd myself I like to think I've researched enough to have done my due diligence. Maybe there's a better way to kill these aliens, but... well, the humans ARE losing.

Sindri

It's less a matter of what weapons you're facing, and more a matter of how many things a human brain can hold onto simultaneously while in a crisis. You can only keep track of maybe 4-5 things at a time before you start grouping them up; just try to count ten dots without either going through the numbers one by one or splitting it into two fives. It's rare for less than a platoon or equivalent to be deployed in combat, but no lieutenant can keep track of all 20-50 soldiers simultaneously, so they break it up into 2-6 squads (sometimes 2 or 3 sections, with 2-3 squads in each), with a sergeant in charge of each squad. The lieutenant doesn't give each soldier an assignment, he gives each sergeant an assignment and then they use their squad to carry it out. Some militaries, like the old Roman legions, that 8-12 man group is as small as the system went, but if you're doing anything more complicated than standing in formation even that many people is too much to really coordinate at once. So most modern forces will further divide a squad into 2-3 fire teams of 2-4 people each, which are enough to get a task done without ever getting in each other's way, and allow the sergeant to think in terms of a small number of teams (doing one task each) instead of a large number of individuals all at once.

The goal would be a super large body that can be entirely contained withing her domain, then, regardless of how much she is attacked, she will be effectively unstoppable as she stomps her way towards the Queen. So long as she has enough resources to heal any damage and to sustain the large frame that will undoubtedly be taking passive damage just from sheer weight and gravity, she is unstoppable. The only real threat would be an Angle or the Queen itself if it has the power to completely destroy her entire body instantaneously, or fast enough to drain her resources at an unsustainable rate. On the way towards the Queen, the enemy Angles would be placed into a forced and unfavorable confrontation where they would have to desperately fight to stop a freaking Kaiju from reaching their Queen. Obviously, this plan would call for an escort of Supers, preferably Wing Clippers, who could fight, and potential kill, the Angles that are desperately trying to stop her. Then, assuming that the plan works, and she reaches the Queen, it is basically game over. All she has to do is eat the Queen and steal her template. Because unless the Queen has some bullshit way to stop her, once she starts eating, she cannot be stopped from winning at that point.

DireGoat

On your point of military structure it would make sense to use bigger squads since larger groups would be less likely to get over run by large groups of melee enemies charging you. Also a large part of militaries breaking up into smaller units was due to how omnipresent machine guns and mortars were from WW1 onwards. Neither of which the aliens have.

Kennyevilmonkey

They are effectively strike teams that are always going to be in the thick of it. A Sergeant would be in charge of giving orders to the platoon in the field while attached to one of the squads, while officers, like lieutenants, would be in operations in the back lines, relaying commands from on high. I'm not a professional, so don't quote me on this.

With a bit of practice she could make her translucent meat blob shell into what looks like a chrysalis made of a pair of wings…

Seraphim feet pics are about to become a disturbingly valuable commodity, if they're the only part of her body she reliably conceals in public. In theory, Seraphim could transport an entire brigade by eating them and then regurgitating, but everybody involved would need to be okay with joining the discontinuity of consciousness club. Also I'm not sure it would work so first you would need to test with somebody who is not only okay with getting swallowed whole, but also with the possibility that they might not come out as themself. I'm sure you could find volunteers, but probably not any who wouldn't make it weird. I like Jimenez. I hope him and Jazz don't die tragically in the first mission. Okay, this unit terminology is very different from what I'm familiar with. A nine-man team is pretty much a squad in most modern and historical forces, and three of those is at least a section if not a full platoon... But a platoon needs a lieutenant as a general rule, so maybe if they had a shortage of officers relative to large numbers of enlisted they expanded the scale of each unit? Call what used to be a leaderless platoon a squad and give it to a sergeant, while your real lieutenants move up to what used to be called a company? Gross as it is, if you eat some sulphur I think you could use the feces room to manufacture black powder internally. Then you could blow stuff up whenever you want! Assuming you have an ignition source anyway. Was there an electric eel in that zoo?

Sindri

The density of her domain decreases as her body becomes larger. But as long as she maintains enough to resist the local Queen's aura, they each only have like 5-6 angels, right? So depending on opposing powers, there's gonna be some fights where she wants to be tiny and hyper dense, but there'll be others where she can go big and physically overwhelm her targets.

A massive regenerating Kaiju would be unstoppable to generic aliens, but would more vulnerable to enemy superpowers. She'd need a lot of support from friendly superheroes to survive the attention she'd receive.

Commencing Mission!

Marquess

I wonder, if she eats enough greenery, could she make a “garden” inside herself to keep people in? A small underground cot and field would probably be more presentable than a flesh cave.

This is my favorite book to read at the moment. I can't even describe my thoughts

Lako

Thanks for the chapter!

Troglodyt

Nice chapter. The meatspace utility is massive, depending on how well things can be isolated. Julietta is probably my favorite of your characters.

I feel like she could just become a massive gelatinous cube and eat her way through the opposition

Kennyevilmonkey

They should really be trying to get her a template of some of the much larger aliens. Then, just feed her an ungodly amount of food until she can go full kaiju and stomp through alien territory. Soldiers would just follow behind and do a cleanup and anything that survived.
