Jeannie Edmondson

Just started this series so a little late to.conversations. But I am so keen on learning who In-joke is. My bet is Emily, which makes the most sense from a power perspective. But the way In-joke talked this chapter, they could be Julietta herself (or maybe Christine), though I can't quite justify either beyond the reasoning In-joke used being the same Julietta has used and Christine having been present when both instances were used. So exciting. Interested to see where this goes.

Sindri

So, like, getting the queen to drop early and then going AWOL might not be the ideal result from the military's point of view, but honestly this is entirely the fault of whoever looked at the girl who can understand the aliens to an unprecedented degree and decided that instead of reassigning her to intelligence gathering she should be sent to hunt human villains. Unless this was just the first step of what was supposed to be a lengthy process? I guess it would kinda make sense for the entirety of Military Intelligence to have been redirected to chasing supervillains if the actual enemy in this war is somebody that traditional espionage methods don't work against, so the only way to turn "Lia" into an intelligence officer in the first place would be to convince command to transfer her to the authority of the people in charge of chasing draft-dodgers, so that they can turn around and assign her to infiltrating enemy hives. Anyway, I gotta wonder what exceptionally cunning plan requires In-Joke to convince Julietta to never trust anything they say again. Seems like it would close off way more options than it opens. (also? the only thing I can think of that would be more on-brand than a thunda protag's primary love interest getting involuntarily mutated into an angelic alien killing machine would be if that happened specifically because the protagonist tried to be nice and come up with a mutually beneficial diplomatic answer) (also also it might not have been the best idea to leave Ana unattended, given her previously stated position re: just talking things out with the monsters that slaughtered her family)

Catamony

I wonder if even the name “defenders of nothing” was chosen just to manipulate her further. Just a little nugget to keep her distrusting them just enough for whatever they need her to distrust them for. I’m not even convinced In-joke hates her and doesn’t just need her ready to kill them at just the right moment. I mean, for someone with all the answers, a challenge sounds like a breath of fresh air.

Lako

Thanks for the chapter!

Alessio Mocci Guicciardi

I like how In-Joke notice how that the protagonist want to implicitly be trusted by everybody and all the people in power while she trust only herself. Though is true that not exploiting the protagonist capability of communicating with the aliens is absurd especially since is easily verifiable.

TheChemist94

Still, thanks to In-Joke and Julietta listening to them a thousands of people just been saved.

Skitterdidnothingwrong

I think they have a much stronger domain than hers so she’s hesitant to attack plus she needs to rescue her girlfriends as fast as possible. Also, if she was going to attack him he probably wouldn’t have been there in the first place since he’s a percog

mike

I think the type of crazy you end up is the big difference. With a time loop you just keep maturing in a sort of linear fashion with each loop you experience. Enough looping would probably drive you nuts but it probably wouldn't result in the sort of fractured multi personality thing we've seen with In-joke. I think experiencing all of the time lines all at once in your head makes more sense for the sort of insane they are displaying, especially with how different versions of in-joke seem to manifest and take the reigns at different times(presumably from different time lines). Thats just the feeling I'm getting so far.

TroubleFait

Why didn't she kill him again?

DireGoat

Reciprocation, Legion, Division, Blasphemy, Perfection, Silhouette, Bliss, Possibility, Contradiction, Failure, and nothing are the one the raptor listed.

TroubleFait

@mike In-Joke's internal thoughts: "With Julietta, everything is possible, *unfortunately*! 😡"

Arkzs

what are all the confirmed gods right now? possibility,Nothing, blasphemy, failure, perfection, contradiction and now legion? can we confirm or deny any others?

AntiClimax she her

I'm wondering what the real difference is between having all timelines forced into your head and living in a timeloop actually is, apart from how you get there.

Flying Goat

So, In-Joke both managed to get Julietta to go rogue, disobeying a direct order, and put Maria in danger. I'm starting to think that maybe, just maybe, In-Joke is a bit of an ass. Is there a God of Asshattery?

CobaltStellite6

In-Joke's pronouns are they/them.

Rahler

I feel like that last line is, at minimum, a double entendre. Also, I put him "playing with his Queen" in the same category.

TroubleFait

Ah, right. Sry.

jthrr

Concern. Wonder.

mike

I get more the feeling that they are experiencing every time line all at once, past future and present and that they are trying to steer the true present towards whatever out come they believe is most favorable. I think that they hate Julietta because she is either the only piece on their board that reacts to what they do unpredictably or that julietta is at least by far the hardest piece to predict with any level of consistency.

Gal Paladin

them, not him

Carter Jessup

Am I mad at Julietta for chomping this hard on all this bait? Yes. Is it stupid of me to be mad at Julietta; a woman who sat down for tea with someone in an active war-zone when the person said don’t worry I’m not distracting you for any reasons you’d care about? Yes.

Elsie Esc

In-Joke’s behavior has been pretty consistent with a time loop so far. I wonder how many times he’s been here

TroubleFait

> "God," they say. "I really do hate you." And now I don't anymore. What a fucker.

TroubleFait

> "Of course, that was purely explanatory. I've only ever gotten it right perfectly every time," they grin, taking a sip of tea. "Ooh! Still a little too hot." This dude is a walking contradiction, I love him.

Manlor

This queen is pretty chill. I hope she survives this.

Azhavia

Also, you've had a LOT of fantastic and interesting antagonists, but In-joke is rapidly climbing to the top of that list

Azhavia

Can I just say that I LOVE the interactions with the aliens? They're all so distinct despite having such an inhuman communication style; they've all got their own "voice" despite not speaking.

Troglodyt

That was an awesome chapter! Very excited. Not sure if we learnd anything about In-Joke or just got fed a while bunch of bull. Probably both, but we won't know for a while. Omnipresence as worship seems cool.

Freak o Love

I was so excited for this chapter and it so delivered

Wensber

Thanks for the chapter!

Lucy Severine

Gaah, In-Joke, stop being so mysterious and annoying! It's mysterious and annoying!

SunderGoldmane

So…Maria is being turned into an angel…

Bi-Dailey

TFTC

dtape467

what a dick

Aden Howard

That’s a nice clarification on Nothing. Almost obvious in hindsight I like it!

Kelly Chan

They all really are adorable!

sebsebs

Why do I find the aliens personable and frankly cute? Congrats on chapter 50!! PS: could that last line be a double entendre ?

Lillian Wood

Such a good chapter!!! The aliens are people too!!
