The chemistry part was just one of those moments of realization as to how powerful Hannah's sorting magic is/could be. I mean, imagine being able to perfectly control the chemicals all around us. She could probably even control people by sorting stimulants in our bodies. And maybe she can sort things to separate molecular bonds. She could sort the air into rocket fuel that reacts with itself. She can probably sort radioactive material out of the ground. She could sort the nearby carbon and nitrogen sources into cyanide gas. Maybe she could even sort Neutrons out of the nucleus. Or sort light/matter into an infinitely small point in space creating a kugelblitz/black hole. Scary yet, and this is a possible way to kill the goddess, she could sort space-time into a vacuum decay where she stabilizes particles more than it is currently, creating an unstoppable bubble that is rewriting the very fundamental laws of the universe. It's all a stretch, but is possible with the magic system.

I've re-read this chapter a lot (as evidenced by my staggered comments, lol), and I think one of the things that resonates the most with me is the series of four paragraphs that begin with "I'm a scary gay monster." Hannah tackles the entire debate around authoritarianism in that small bit of thought. She rejects the ideas that the protagonists of Hive Minds Give Good Hugs and Vigor Mortis believe in; she thinks that nobody can be trusted with ultimate power. This is also kind of Thunda's way of saying "just because my other stuff may have leaned towards benevolent authoritarianism, that doesn't mean this one will too."

I'm going to have to start a book club. A book club for reading your books and discussing them. Because, as I read this chapter, I kept having bits I wanted to react to, and comment on, and just share and enjoy the sharing of. Fortunately, I have a rather large circle of family and friends who are going to absolutely love reading your work. 🙂 I'm especially looking forward to hearing my 13-year-old's take on it. Don't worry, he's more than able to engage with the content in emotionally and mentally healthy ways, especially with parental guidance. And I think it will spark some really interesting discussions.

It's hard to describe the relief I felt when Sela said, "I'm going to /wipe them all from the face of reality./" Because when someone sets up a kill-or-be-killed, I would so much rather that they were the ones who did the dying, than the people they are trying to murder.

Loving it!

Hannah you need to be way more careful than that with the chemistry set. Lots of stuff that's safe for kids to play with in a classroom becomes abruptly unsafe if you get the concentrations or purities way outside what should be possible with the equipment provided.
