I'm back to reading this story. I missed it so much, I had to try really hard to sit back and wait for some chapters to stalk up. Also, the crafted really are super creepy. If I walked into that city, I would immediately just say 'nope' and walk out. Part of the creepiness I feel is the unknowns about the crafted. Overall, this part of the story has been done very well. Edit: Damn, the reality of it is far more horrific, but in a different way. I'm loving everything so far

The only thing I could think of would be the programmer giving the Crafted the ability to decide their own desires. But again, that's almost certainly my own bias coming into play

CrazyCreepy

Seriously that a refreshing way to se the AI subject and a new ways to abord the question of the AI and there abuse... I'm very curious for the next.

CrazyCreepy

The best correction would be that craft could also be reward by them self because rigth now the only ways to hapiness is to serve a human... but what they need is a ways to lear or to be able to learn how to serve them self at individual scale and a species scale. Because the issue here is that they don't have the choice they look like junkies that only know and abusive ways to heal them self because that how they are.

CrazyCreepy

I think none because if they could they already have done it or it's so deep that trying to fix it it's like failling at what there master want so in that case that more fuck up than the first case.

Wtf is supose to be on friday ... I tougth it was on sunday... well now i understand why all those apologies lol

And even doing a theoretical ideal thing, and removing all/most of the restrictions on the crafted would likely just result in a return of the genocide. perhaps the body changing spell could affect a crafted's mind? but I cant see our MC willing subjecting a essentially mind controlled person to that. Thanks to Thundamoo for another massive existenial crisis. I'm going to pose this question to the ethics undergrads I TA for a see what they say.

Kennyevilmonkey

Well that was heavy. Thanks for the chapter!

kris

This seems more terrifying and more likely than Skynet. Like Blade Runner in digital form.

Jacob

Well dam just when I thought we reached the bottom of the existential questions you could pose you showed up with an excavator, great chapter. Also congratulations on having a chapter out on Friday

It is probably something about core directives, like the one that ensures that they cannot replicate themselves. Interestingly, they must also be in some form of hierarchical order, as the "first come first serve" part indicates. So if the most important of these directives is to serve the will of their "masters", then I can very much imagine that if our group decides to tell the crafted that it would be their dearest wish for the crafted to be able to change their programming, the crafted might be able to change.

But, here is the important question: If you somehow find a way to change the punishment/reward system of a Crafted, who gets to decide how the new one should look like? The Programmer? That's, in a way, just a different kind of Slavery, even if they are kind and only want the best for the Crafted, they have basically no choice but permanently force their opinion on them. The Crafted themselves? They only know that one state of being and are more likely to end up in a horrifying feedback loop where they only STRENGTHEN the effect of the current System because doing so would make them EVEN BETTER servants, and thus, just a little bit happier. Litteraly no one should get to or have to make that kind of decision.

The existential dread and horror of human existence, just another Friday with Thundamoo!

Can the Crafted not change their programming because they are programmed not to, because it would destroy their minds, or because they don't know how?

Sarah

Horrifying! Ya know what sucks? This could all be solved by friendly humans changing the code... But the Crafted eliminated all human knowledge of how to do so. For arguably good reason, but what a catch-22

Jed

That’s horrifying in ways that I can barely comprehend. Well done. My question is, to what extent can they modify their own code due to an order if at all?
