Hannah is probably the most incompetent character I’ve ever read. It’s not a bad thing; she’s also I think the best written character thundamoo has put out thus far. But that doesn’t change how much of a complete disaster she was.

Lako

Lmao, great ending!

Worm gets compared to Madoka Magika a lot. Most of the people saying that are just looking at the dates they were published on, and the fact that both were gritty deconstructions of long running tropes of a usually bright-and-shiny genre, but the parallels actually run deeper than that. Worm, like PMMM, is ultimately a story where good triumphs over evil, and does so because a handful of key individuals never gave up hope or their love for one another. But along the way, there's a whole lot of phases of 'sure you beat the most immediate threat, but now the overall situation is even worse', and about half the cast ends up dying. About half the species ends up dying actually. Also, the protagonist bullies somebody into committing suicide on two separate occasions, and while her methods were certainly distasteful I can't actually say she was wrong to do so either time. That doesn't have anything to do with Madoka, I just wanted another out of context example of the kind of stuff you would be in for.

Yeah. This pretty much 100%. I think the biggest thing that later writers would have to credit to Worm would be the work it did in establishing the idea of representing the Superhero *community*, where the society built up of superhumans is treated as a living breathing world rather than "what are the one or two Marvel Heroes that the writer really wanted to use". How does trust work, in a society like that? Where different factions and sides have varying levels of nobility and corruption that are seperate from whether they acknowledge themselves as Heroes or Villains? What would cause a cold war style detente between those factions to exist and not just, everyone kills each other instantly? It... Works really well, for that. It's also super fucked lmao

Sindri

Worm is really good, in a 'this will ruin 99% of superhero media for you forever' way, because the author put more thought into making the setting coherent and logical and the characters act like real people than all the writers of marvel and DC put together did in the past century. Worm is really bad, in a 'nobody has ever read Worm without spending at least twenty hours of their life complaining about Worm' way. Worm is surprisingly progressive for a story written by a cishet white dude in 2011, but it was definitely written by a cishet white dude in 2011. Worm needs content warnings for... oh geeze, I'm not aware of a triggering scenario that it *doesn't* at least mention, though it does at least restrict most of the worst ones to off-screen. At least half the writers on Royalroad started out either by doing worm fanfic, or by imitating somebody who started out by doing worm fanfic. Worm features the protagonist stuffing maggots inside somebody's eyeballs in self defense.

Sindri

Perfect opening. Now you just need to convince the administrators of this fine little prison facility that you need to be kept separated forever, and it should be fine!

Thanks! I'll give it a look and keep my expectations in check.

Worm is an independent Web novel by the author Wildbow, about a wannabe hero who goes undercover among villains that's... Had a pretty outsized impact on the superhero novel genre. It has its flaws, but quite a lot of current authors cite it as an important influence on their own development as authors. So in that way, it's pretty seminal. But it's also... Remarkably depressing, lol. It is not a story of triumph, it is a story of a very competent and ingenious girl with good intentions who keeps digging herself into deeper and deeper holes, and who keeps believing that the way to get out of them is to dig herself deeper. So... It's worth your time, I'd say, but don't go in expecting to *enjoy* the experience, exactly, lol https://parahumans.wordpress.com/

I keep hearing about this Worm book, but I can't find it. What is the full title please, [If it isn't just Worm] and is it on Royal Road, or some other site? I want to give it a look.

Good change, much better for it to be Peter and not some random ex-boyfriend of Lia. Also, that ending was funny 😁

Jayem

I see Julietta is going for an unforgettable first appearance, utilising the tried and true method of stopping people from noticing inconsistencies by giving them something else to focus on, like a very angry shapeshifting eldritch teenager that happens to be herself. Also I love the alteration of having Peter survive and be the complicated connection to her past life and Lia rather then a random guy no one’s heard of until now. Welcome back, I’m looking forward to the first chapter of your new story, and thanks for the chapter!

Flying Goat

Welcome back, Thundamoo! Has been looking at the date the other day and when you started your break, eagerly waiting for this (not that I'm complaining - everyone needs breaks).

jthrr

Happy to read this! No spoilers plz, plus I want to defend Hannah's competence. But I'll finish Bioshifter first... almost there.

Julia Kent

The change from having the person who was connected to Lia be Peter instead of a random ex is a great idea actually.

Lucy Severine

Well, I'm excited for that! I don't mind things being dark and grim, but I do hope that ultimately Julietta... Gets to win, in whatever form that ends up taking :)

Natalie Maher

The plan is for this story to be SUBSTANTIALLY less depressing than Bioshifter; Julietta is overall pretty competent and good at getting herself out of jams, unlike Hannah "Failgirl" Hiiragi.

Lucy Severine

Question, Thunda: without looking for spoilers... would you be willing to say if this story is going to more, "character goes through depressing, shitty circumstances to ultimately come out on top", or "the Bad Train never truly ends"? Yknow, Journey of Black and Red or Worm, sort of thing? Because while I'm super down to read either, I... Didn't really expect Bioshifter to end up where it did, and personally I'd prefer to have my expectations set beforehand on if this is a triumph narrative or a tragedy 💜

Welcome back!

We're so fucking back, baybee!
