I don't think the course ever provided a 555 circuit. Instead, "blinky" things were built up by discretes... Oh, yes, just checked and the big perfboards are phenolic. Crazy

Totally takes me back. In '77 I had just finished taking a mail-order Electronics course. I think I started in 1975, so it was pretty long. Lots of Heathkit projects that are now sadly cannibalized or gone. I still have the original very large perfboards and aluminum rails that once formed a jumpered lab.
