Hey Fran.....That light box trick is really clever and when you took it apart it brought a smile to my face! That’s what you call magic... and all from just two clusters of LEDs. Thinking out aloud and I know you’re a purist but it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to make a cheap DSKY display using the same technique. I’m sharing your pain with the trouble you’re going through to make the genuine EL display. I guess no short cuts for you.

That's interesting Fran. I'm wondering if you could coat the inside of each chamber with some sort of electroluminescent material - the lighting would be continuous rather than the point-light source (relatively speaking) of LEDs. They're talking about 3D printing houses on Mars, think what you could do with that..
